Marine Park – Famed Local Artist Danielle Mastrion Transforms Lenape Playground Into A Work Of Art

Artist Danielle Mastrion has just breathed new life into the snake, turtle and egg sprinklers at Lenape Playground in Marine Park (aka “Snake Park”) at Avenue U and East 37th Street, painting the once old and worn looking sculptures with vibrant colors and playful patterns.

Mastrion, 39, who grew up a few blocks away from the park and frequented it often as a child, is an accomplished muralist who has been painting her entire life and professionally for about 10 years.

According to Mastrion, she has completed hundreds of these striking murals, mostly on a large scale and appearing in all five boroughs with most in Brooklyn, but also nationally and internationally.

“I think this might be the first sculpture I’ve painted,” said Mastrion. “Most people see me doing flat, kind of two-dimensional stuff so it’s kind of cool to see me do something a little bit different.”

Mastrion initially reached out to Marine Park Alliance in December because she knew that there weren’t many murals in Marine Park and wanted to do this project. The nonprofit agreed to commission the work after receiving agreement from the Parks Department by early spring.

Despite nursing a broken finger she has been rehabbing since February and scorching 10-hour days in the sun, Mastrion worked tirelessly from July 9th to July 23rd to complete the project.

“This is actually pretty fun for me because I’m freestyling it,” Mastrion said.

As a portrait painter, she wanted the head and tail to look realistic and kept the diamond pattern so it wouldn’t be too unfamiliar for people. She chose bright colors to make people feel happy.

“Even though they may not necessarily understand the piece, humans just have a natural response to color,” she said. “Like when it’s a beautiful blue day,…

The officers first changed into official dress and headed to Mohican State Park for photos.

Once they returned from photos the team wrote one funny, one FFA and one serious question on notecards to answer later at a campfire.

The team was responsible for preparing meals during the trip on a $150 budget for the next four meals, they prepared a menu and list of ingredients needed to cook the meals for the next two days.

They then went to Rodhe’s IGA and got the supplies they needed and were cents under the budget provided.

Once they had returned, officers Derek Miller and Becca Schuch prepared soft tacos for lunch. After lunch the officer team played a team-building game where they were blindfolded and given toy animals and only knew the color of the animals, the team had to guess what animal was missing and failed to identify the correct animal.

The team also took an Enneagram test to identify the different types of people on the officer team.

After that, the chapter went to their cabin southwest of Killbuck and discussed people who were leaders in their lives. Then officers Andi Schuch and Alysa Pringle prepared pork tenderloins for dinner.

After dinner the team sat around the campfire and talked about good things and bad things of the past year, goals they have for themselves and the chapter, things they need to change and things they need to add or take away.

The next morning officers Garrett Fowler and Sarah Irwin prepared bacon and eggs for breakfast.

Microsoft just sped up the Xbox Series S and X boot time

The Xbox Series X is now officially faster compared to the PlayStation 5. But, before you get the pitchforks, hear us out first.

Microsoft just sped up the Xbox Series S and X boot timeMicrosoft just sped up the Xbox Series S and X boot time

Over the past few days, Xbox testers noticed their bootup times getting faster. Eventually, Microsoft fessed up and admitted that they tweaked something. Josh Munsee, director of Xbox integrated marketing, confirmed that the company did some backend work to shorten the boot up animation from 9 seconds down to 4 seconds.

Mind you, the changes aren’t limited to Microsoft’s latest consoles.

Senior product manager lead at Xbox, Jake Rosenberg, explained in a follow-up tweet that Xbox One owners should have their consoles booting up faster. Unfortunately, Xbox owners will only feel the shorter boot times if they have their consoles set to Energy Saver mode. Unlike with Standby mode, Energy Saver mode fully powers off the console. This way, the console doesn’t consume any electricity at all.

In total, the Xbox Series S/X boot process should now only take around 15 seconds instead of the usual 20. If you weren’t a huge fan of the Energy…

Longshots dominate PA All-Stars action

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Four $30,000 divisions of a Pennsylvania All-Stars event for two-year-old harness racing trotting fillies were featured on Monday afternoon (Jul. 18) at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono, and after a favorite started the stakes action off, it was a longshot player’s delight the rest of the way.

Broadway Sensation and driver David Miller won at 53-1 odds (Curtis Salonick Photo)

There was no hint in the air of what was to come when the Father Patrick – Evelyn filly Vanessa J won as a heavy favorite while taking a maiden mark of 1:57.3 in an easy 4¼ length victory. Tim Tetrick guided the winner, who had been fourth in a PA Sire Stakes in her only other purse start, for owner/trainer Lucas Wallin, who has had quite the profitable relationship with Tetrick as of late.

VANESSA J REPLAY

Heavy favorite Angelpedia made the lead in another All-Stars division, but then she made a break past the eighth, leaving the race wide open. In the end, it was the International Moni – Possessed By Lindy filly Pembroke Moni who made the best rally in the last quarter, scoring her second career victory in a 1:58.3 mile by 1¼ lengths for meet-leading driver Matt Kakaley, trainer Mark Ford, and owner William Varney. The first four finishers in this race went off at 16-1, 26-1, 6-1, and 99-1.

PEMBROKE MONI REPLAY

David Miller won the other two races, although not getting the pari-mutuel respect a Hall of Famer is usually due.

He guided the fastest All-Stars winner of the day, the Donato Hanover – Movitational miss Portulaca, who won a Pennsylvania Sire Stakes in her only other purse start and here lowered her…

Exhibit works to forge relationships with Indigenous people

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) —About 400 years ago, the first Europeans began exploring land now known as Delaware.

As they journeyed through the region, their travels brought them face to face with the people who had lived there for millennia – the Lenni Lenape, the father tribe of the Lenape and Nanticoke Indians.

The Delaware Art Museum’s recently debuted exhibit, “In Conversation: Will Wilson,” works to forge a new relationship with Indigenous people by bringing visitors face to face with them through stories of Native people, 19th-century photography and augmented reality technology for an immersive experience that connects the past with the present.

In about a year and a half from idea to execution, the exhibition came together in whirlwind timing for show planning. Not only did the museum need to secure the artist’s availability, but they also needed to develop a relationship with Delaware’s Native population − some of the very people the artist would feature in his photos.

Building trust with sincere intention

The Delaware Art Museum exhibit showcases the photography of Will Wilson, a New Mexico-based Diné (Navajo) photographer whose work centers on Native American identity and culture.

Commissioning Will Wilson’s participation and arranging the logistics took effort, but the bulk of the endeavor came with establishing trust and relationships with Delaware’s Native American community.

Called Lenapehoking, the original homeland of the Lenape and Nanticoke encompassed present-day New Jersey, most of Delaware and eastern New York and Pennsylvania.

Iz Balleto, a community engagement specialist at the Delaware Art Museum, said due to past misrepresentation and exploitation, the Native community was not particularly interested in being involved in this project – earning their trust would be a process.

That process started with the tribal chiefs of the Delaware Lenape and Nanticoke first.

He said that after he and the museum committee…

Sailors compete in Interlake National Regatta on Charles Mills Lake

LUCAS — For the first time in 57 years, Charles Mills Lake hosted the Interlake Sailing Class Association National Regatta.

Competitors from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Washington D.C. competed in the regatta. The winner of the National regatta will represent the Interlake Class Representative in the “Championship of Champions.”

“It was a great event. We had plenty of breeze and plenty of wind on both days,” said William Sanderson, the commodore of the Mohican Sailing Club and the Local National Regatta Chairman. “Actually three days because Wednesday was the women and juniors. We got eight races completed for the championship racing.

“The race committee had to set a course that was hard to set because of the direction of the wind was more squarely coming from the West, which is the skinny part. It’s much better on this lake if it’s going north or south but it never did because we had a thunderstorm coming this way.”

The racing champion for the Interlake National Regatta was the group of Matt Fisher, Jamie Jones and Jim Ward from the Hoover Sailing Club in Westerville, Ohio.

Second place was the group led by Brian Parker from the Sandusky Sailing Club in Sandusky. Third place went to the group of Nate Ireland, Bridget Ireland and Vincent Ireland also from the Hoover Sailing Club.

“The racing was high competition,” said Sanderson. “There were several past national champions in the regatta this year but the guy who won it was also an international national champion. The team that finished second and third did an outstanding job. They were really pushing hard and the top three battled it out. It was pretty amazing.”

The last day of the regatta was scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday but the race was cut short early due to thunderstorm warnings.

“Most of the competitors were ok with taking the side of safety and cancelling a portion…

FanDuel Casino Offering New Online Games in Michigan, Pennsylvania

Michigan and Pennsylvania are the only places where you can get the original Detroit-style pizza and Primanti Bros. sandwiches, respectively, but those aren’t the only things the two states can claim mutual exclusivity on. As of Monday, the two states share a rarity in the US online casino industry as well, pertaining to FanDuel Casino specifically.

Michigan and Pennsylvania are now the only places online casino players can access live dealer games from a dedicated FanDuel studio. It’s unclear whether these games could be available across other FanDuel brands in other markets right now.

Michigan and Pennsylvania online casino games feature FanDuel Casino addition

Michigan online casino and Pennsylvania online casino games now feature a new brand in town. According to a Monday press release, FanDuel Casino now has its own live dealer content in both gambling hot spots. The deal is an expansion of FanDuel’s existing partnership with Evolution Gaming. However, the studio bears FanDuel’s branding, not Evolution’s.

The release says “all of FanDuel’s live dealer games” will stream from the studios. Specifically, the release mentions blackjack and roulette. Among advantages for players, FanDuel says the live experience will allow it to offer exclusive promotions to its players.

Many online casino players prefer live dealer games because they are more true to an in-person casino experience. With a dedicated studio, FanDuel will be able to offer a more intimate experience as well.

To whatever degree Michiganders and Pennsylvanians prefer live dealer games, they’ll be the only ones to enjoy this new FanDuel content for the foreseeable future.

What about Connecticut, New Jersey, or other brands?

FanDuel also offers its online casino product in New Jersey and West Virginia. Furthermore, it operates the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut plus the Stardust online casino in New…

Culture connection the key at Powwow

Drums, dancing are the center of attention as the Delaware Art Museum hosts a powwow, but participants say remembering the past is the important part.

William Bretzger, Delaware News Journal

One of the first things Iz Balleto did when he moved to Delaware from New York was look for signs of Indigenous culture.

Balleto, who serves as the community engagement specialist at the Delaware Art Museum, grew up with strong ties to his Quechua heritage, tracing his ancestors back to the Incas in South America. But in Delaware — which is home to multiple Native tribes — Balleto found that outside of the tribes themselves, most Indigenous culture was relegated to small museum displays and often forgotten history.

“What about the people that have lived here for thousands of years?” Balleto said he wondered. “What about their representation? What about their presence?”

He wanted a way to share the rich history and culture of local tribes with the community at large; at the same time, he wanted to make sure he could do so in a way that showed love and respect to these traditions.

On Saturday, Balleto’s vision became a reality.
