H.S. Boys Basketball: Wyoming Area defeats shorthanded Nanticoke Area

EXETER — Wyoming Area climbed to the top of the division on Tuesday night.

Now the job was to stay there Saturday afternoon against a divisional contender besieged by injuries.

The Warriors were able to do so, preventing Nanticoke Area from making much traction in the second half as they posted a 46-37 win in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 boys basketball.

Wyoming Area improved to 3-0 in the division and 8-4 overall. Anthony DeLucca and Dane Schutter led the offense with 15 points each. Schutter also had nine rebounds. Tyler Sciandra had eight.

Wyoming Area defeated two-time defending divisional champion Holy Redeemer in triple overtime on Tuesday.

“That was certainly something we talked about after the Redeemer game and leading up to the game today,” Wyoming Area coach Anthony Macario said. “About using that game to get in our heads the right way because it’s very easy to let down after such a big win like we had the other night.”

Nanticoke Area fell to 3-2 in the division and 6-9 overall.

Nanticoke Area’s injuries started before the beginning of the season when starting guard Peyton Kepp was lost for the campaign because of a football injury. The Trojans were also minus starter RJ Brogan on Saturday afternoon, but the biggest missing piece no doubt was standout big man Jaidyn Johnson.

Johnson, a two-time Times Leader All-WVC selection in basketball and an all-state pick in football, was injured earlier in the week against Hanover Area. Nanticoke Area coach Zach Pientka didn’t disclose the injury, but Johnson is expected to miss significant time.

Bowzer brings Rock ‘N’ Doo-Wop Party to Mohegan Sun

Wowzer, Bowzer. He’s back.

Jon Bauman, better known to millions of music lovers as Bowzer from Sha Na Na, is bringing his Rock ‘N’ Doo-Wop Party Volume XXII back to Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday, Jan. 14.

A tribute to the much-loved and revered music of the ‘50s and early ‘60s, the show features more than 10 groups and individual artists who made an indelible mark on the music scene.

Showtime is 3 p.m.

The show will feature headliner Kenny Vance and the Planotones as well as Gary “U.S.” Bonds, Jay Siegel’s Tokens, La La Brooks who was the original lead singer of The Crystals, The Dubs, Joey Dee and the Starliters, Johnny Farina of Santo & Johnny, 9/11 firefighter Frank Pizarro who is the former lead singer of The Platters, Bowzer & The Stingrays with Johnny Contardo, Rocky and the Rollers, and special guest Bobby Brooks Wilson, son of famed Jackie Wilson.

Still going strong at age 76 – although tours and many solo shows are a thing of the past – Bauman said his Rock ‘N’ Doo-Wop Party is the perfect venue to showcase the talents of these much-beloved performers.

“This show has had a life of its own since I began putting it together in 2003, and we only missed one year due to Covid. It began as Bowzer’s Ultimate Doo-Wop Party and we were doing two shows a year, a doo-wop version in the winter and a rock version in the summer. The winter show was always jammed, but in the summer it was more difficult to fill the arena with so much else going on. So, about four years ago we combined the genres into what is now Bowzer’s Rock ‘N’ Doo-Wop Party,” Bauman said about their 22-year run at Mohegan Sun.

Biden Admin Looks To Remove ‘Penn’ From Pennsylvania

In its continued attempts to erase American history, the Biden administration was preparing to tear down a statue of William Penn in Philadelphia.

However, late Monday, the National Park Service reversed its decision to remove a famous statue of William Penn from Philadelphia’s Welcome Park. (Updated Story Here)

For those who may not know, Penn is the 17th-century English religious leader who founded both Philadelphia and Pennsylvania.

The Penn monument, which sits on the grounds of his 17th-century home, was set to demolished as part of a “rehabilitation” plan for the park that honors his contribution to U.S. history.

Penn’s “rehabilitation” by the Biden administration would have dispatched him to the dustbin of history while retelling his story from the perspective of Native Americans.

The National Park Service explained the project in a press release issued late Friday afternoon:

“The proposed rehabilitation of Welcome Park includes expanded interpretation of the Native American history of Philadelphia and was developed in consultation with representatives of the indigenous nations of the Haudenosaunee, the Delaware Nation, Delaware Tribe of Indians, the Shawnee Tribe, and the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma,” the release said.

“The reimagined Welcome Park maintains certain aspects of the original design such as the street grid, the rivers and the east wall while adding a new planted buffer on three sides, and a ceremonial gathering space with circular benches.”

Video from South Korea’s resort falsely shared as visuals of a Chinese mall. – Fact Crescendo

The video shows a digital entertainment street named Aurora at Mohegan Inspire Entertainment Resort in South Korea.

A video of a gorgeous roof with LED displays is being shared on social media, with the claims that it shows a mall in China. The caption of the viral video reads, “A Mall in China, people visit there to see the roof”

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation by breaking the video into key frames using the InVid tool and ran a Google reverse image search on the same. The results led us to the same video on a post on Welele.es. This post mentioned the location as Mohegan Inspire Entertainment Resort, South Korea.

Keeping this in mind, we conducted relevant keyword search and the results led us to the website of the Mohegan Inspire Entertainment Resort in Korea which contained visuals that matched the viral video. This is South Korea’s newest entertainment resort opened in November 2023. The first phase of opening included three hotel towers with 1,275 rooms, a multi-purpose arena, including the largest ballroom in Korea, its signature restaurants and Aurora, state-of-the-art digital entertainment street. Aurora is a 150-meter-long digital entertainment street that offers an immersive experience through its giant LED screens and stunning media art content.

The visuals seen in the viral video is a place within this resort known as Aurora Entertainment Street. Removing Penn’s statue from Welcome Park won’t hurt his legacy one bit

On Friday, the National Park Service sought public input on initial renovation plans for Philadelphia’s Welcome Park, located at Second Street and Sansom Walk. On Monday, the park service revoked its invitation after its proposal — which suggested the removal of a small William Penn statue and adding an “expanded interpretation of the Native American history of Philadelphia” — set off a national barrage of commentary.

I unequivocally support the park service’s move toward a redesign of the park’s current interpretation — statue or no statue. As an artist, I dedicated five years of research to Welcome Park, creating a site-specific performance/tour that spoke directly to the statue in question and surrounding design — what it does and doesn’t do.

I detail this not to claim the capital “T” Truth, but to provide my context and perspective in the rigamarole of this news cycle that will flame and die.

I’d like to address concerns and interpretations showing up repeatedly from politicians, newscasters, and across social media platforms, and move the “dialogue” around this Penn statue beyond the current fixation of removal vs. no removal.

Here are some misconceptions about what removing Penn’s statue from Welcome Park means.

We erase his role from history

William Penn deserves his place in Philadelphia’s story. He has one, many times over. Even if his statue were removed from Welcome Park, his icon would not be canceled; it’s ever-present.

Have you seen Penn’s statue atop City Hall? It’s more than 36 feet tall. What about the one at Penn Treaty Park? Oh, and how about the one outside Penn Hospital, which, coincidentally, is named after him, just like the state of Pennsylvania?

A Red Storm wreaks havoc at the Mohegan Sun Winter Championships

The shooting touch of Tyler August and tenacious team defense and rebounding led the Monroe Red Storm to victory in the seventh grade division of the Mohegan Sun Winter Championships last weekend.

In the first half, August made four three-pointers for his travel basketball team, helping Monroe build an early lead against Agawam, Mass., in the championship game Sunday Night.

Agawam chipped away at the Red Storm’s lead, pulling to within one point before Johnny Angelopoulos drew a foul and sunk two free throws to ice the game and Monroe’s 34-31 triumph with four seconds to go.

“I told the team after the game that I am proud of them for the energy and tenacity they play with on the court, but more importantly that the bond and appreciation they truly have for one another is what sets them apart,” Head Coach Jay Farrer said during a telephone interview Tuesday night.

Farrer said the 12 teammates, who all go to Jockey Hollow Middle School, spent a lot of time together at the casino and swimming. All of the families went out to dinner together on Saturday night, and Farrer said the boys had their arms around each other while they ate.

Monroe won all four games in the tournament, which was sponsored by Vertical Hoops.

On Saturday, the Red Storm beat Brookfield 34-17 and the Norwalk Youth Club 47-20. Then they beat Brookfield again, 35-17 in the semifinals Sunday to advance to the championship game.

Farrer said his team was the number one seed in the tournament, which mostly featured Connecticut teams, but also teams from Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Quebec.
