Students Learn First-Hand About Emergency Preparedness

Four University of Scranton students participated in an emergency management drill in Luzerne County for the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station. The students are all members of W3USR: The University of Scranton Amateur Radio Club, pursuing majors offered through the Department of Physics and Engineering and the Computing Sciences Department.

“The students were participating in the drill as members Luzerne County Amateur Radio Emergency Services at the City of Nanticoke Emergency Operations Center (EOC). … An important part of the EOC is communications between the Municipal and County EOC,” said Dave Skoniecki, an emergency preparedness coordinator for Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, explaining that each municipal EOC provides a back-up means of communication in case the primary communication channel becomes unavailable. “The Luzerne County Amateur Radio Emergency Services plays an important role in these drills and exercises and we greatly appreciate the participation of The University of Scranton students in the community.”

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of trained radio amateurs who provide public service communications support. Trained amateur radio operators serve communities when storms or other disasters damage critical communication infrastructure, including cell towers, and wired and wireless networks. Amateur radio can function completely independently of the internet and phone systems. An amateur radio station can be set up almost anywhere in minutes.

University students who participated were: James P. (JP) Fox, Hillsborough, New Jersey, a computer science major in his senior year at Scranton; Gerard N. Piccini, Monroe Township, New Jersey, an electrical engineering major in his junior year; Thomas J. Pisano, Staten Island, New York, an electrical engineering major in his junior year; and Stephen Salamon, Wayne, New Jersey, a mechanical engineering major in his freshman year at Scranton.

Nathaniel Frissell, Ph.D., assistant professor physics and electrical engineering, serves as moderator for W3USR: The University of Scranton Amateur Radio Club.

Ontario’s last coal-fired plant reduced to rubble in carefully planned effort

After a year of planning and two years of carefully staged remediation and demolition, which included three separate implosions, Ontario’s last coal-fired generating plant is gone.

Mississauga, Ont.-based York1 is in the very final stages of the site cleanup of the former 326-MW three-boiler Ontario Power Generating Station in Thunder Bay.

Located on Mission Island on the shores of Lake Superior, it was the last of four plants that were closed and demolished as part of Ontario’s phase-out of coal-fired electricity generation. The others were Lakeview, Nanticoke and Lambton.

Unlike those other demolitions, which was overseen by OPG, this project was entirely managed by York1, says the company’s director of business development, Christina Murray.

After purchasing the site, York1 began initial planning in April 2020 and then began developing more detailed plans when its crews moved onsite exactly a year later, in April 2021.

In September, the first step in the demolition was completed with the blasting of the plant’s 198-metre-high concrete stack by Rakowski Energetics and Engineering. In the lead-up to that implosion, an extensive planning process was conducted with the input and participation of three separate engineering firms.

They included Englobe, the project engineer of record, blast engineer DSI, and ASI which conducted computer simulated tests to determine how the stack would react to the blast and wouldn’t prematurely fail, says Murray.

Some of the precautions included ensuring the stack would fall to the left and not to the right, which could have impacted an Ontario Hydro live switch substation. Any openings on the west side of the stack’s base had to be filled in with concrete and an opening had to be sawcut on the east side to allow it to collapse in that direction.

Favourable wind movements also had to be factored in, she says.

Cohanzick Nature Reserve aims to preserve and teach Lenape culture

From Camden and Cherry Hill to Trenton and the Jersey Shore, what about life in New Jersey do you want WHYY News to cover? Let us know.

Tyrese Gould Jacinto credits her father’s generation for firmly establishing roots so that her children and grandchildren do not have to face the same perils of identity erasure that her father did growing up.

“We went all up and down the whole East Coast to all the pow-wow who you know to be with other communities,” she said, describing how her dad helped regroup the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indians starting in the late 1970s. (Emma Lee/WHYY)

Jacinto is now following her father Mark “Quiet Hawk” Gould’s footsteps. Gould served as the chief of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation for 45 years. Jacinto founded the Native American Advancement Corporation in 2009 with the goal to retain the future generations of her tribe in the South Jersey region.

“My generation got their education and they went someplace else because they had to make a living someplace else,” she said. “It’s our idea that we need to forge something here so that we can stay and make this place a better place so that we don’t continue to lose the generations with education and a better life and the so-called American dream.”

The organization, which trains in the fields of building sciences and energy conservation, started at Jacinto’s dining…

New Jersey’s Native American Advancement Corp Secures Ancestral Land to Preserve Lenape Culture

Tyrese Gould Jacinto, inspired by her father’s efforts in the late 1970s, has taken on the mission of preserving the cultural heritage of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indians in New Jersey. Through the non-profit organization she founded, Native American Advancement Corp, Jacinto aims to ensure that future generations of her tribe can retain their identity and traditions.

Jacinto’s journey began at her dining table, where she started offering job training programs in building sciences and energy conservation. As the organization grew, they moved into a rented space in downtown Bridgeton, but it soon became clear that a larger space was needed to fully realize their vision.

In a stroke of luck, Jacinto, who works as a carpenter and realtor, stumbled upon a listing for 63 acres of land in Quinton Township, Salem County. The property, formerly a church, held great significance for the Gould family as it was where their ancestors were born and raised. Recognizing the potential of the land, Jacinto negotiated the price down to $820,000 plus closing costs and secured financial support from organizations such as the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, and the state’s Green Acres program.

The acquired land, known as the Cohanzick Nature Reserve, will serve as a conservation, cultural, and educational center. Plans are underway to develop programming that focuses on conservation, land stewardship, and Lenape culture. Visitors to the reserve will have the opportunity to learn about and engage with the rich heritage of the Lenape Indians.

By reclaiming this ancestral land, Jacinto and her organization are ensuring the preservation of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indians’ history and traditions for generations to come.

H.S. Football: Nanticoke Area’s Zack Fox sets rushing record in rout of rival Hanover Area

HANOVER TWP. — When guys wearing numbers 50 and 53 line up in the backfield in front of one of the best running backs in the area, it’s pretty easy to figure out what’s about to happen.

Despite that, Hanover Area couldn’t stop the inevitable.

With Steve Armstong and Ryan Wiaterowski — aka numbers 50 and 53 — leading the way, senior running back Zack Fox ran into the Nanticoke Area record book in a 54-0 victory in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 game.

Fox became Nanticoke Area’s all-time leading rusher and surpassed Jason Mitkowski, who set the record in 2002. He needed 156 yards and finished with 172 on 10 carries. The record was broken on a 56-yard touchdown dash up the middle that helped build the Trojans’ lead to 45-0 with 4:39 left until halftime.

“I never imagined it, but it feels great,” said Fox, who broke into the starting lineup as a sophomore due to an injury to the starting running back.

Fox also scored two first-quarter touchdowns and three rushing two-point conversions in the first quarter as Nanticoke Area led 24-0 entering the second quarter. Armstrong and Wiaterowski were often leading his runs, sending nearly 500 pounds of fullbacks at the defense.

“That’s one of the best things that we did,” Fox said of the backfield alignment. “We needed extra protection and we can still run stuff with them, too.”

Wiaterowski, who is listed at 275 pounds, rushed for his sixth touchdown of the year in the first quarter.

Nanticoke Area finished the regular season at 6-4 and will play at Crestwood in the District 2 Class 4A quarterfinals next weekend. Hanover Area (3-7) held the fourth and final playoff spot in Class 3A as of late…
