Did You Know There Are 3 Cities in The USA With The Name Jamaica?

Jamaica is a popular destination for tourists and that’s particularly true for people in the U.S. However, there are also three cities in the U.S. that bear the name Jamaica, each with its own unique history.

Jamaica, Vermont

Jamaica Vermont - Did you Know there are 3 Cities in the USA with the Name Jamaica

The Vermont city wasn’t actually named after the Caribbean island. The word Jamaica is from the Natick language of the indigenous people living in the region. The word means “beaver.” Located in the state’s Windham Co., the name was even included in the city’s charter and encompasses 42 square miles.

One of the things that Jamaica, VT was known for in its early days was abundant woodlands and waterways where beavers dwelled. It’s interesting to note that the island of Jamaica’s earliest inhabitants, the Tainos, called their island Xaymaca. The adaptation of the word means “land of wood and water.”

Jamaica, New York

Jamaica Queens New York - Did you Know there are 3 Cities in the USA with the Name Jamaica

Jamaica is also a neighborhood in Queens, NY that’s home to a significant African American and Caribbean population. The community in Queens, NY can also be traced to beavers, along with the early Native Americans that lived there known as the Lenape. The word beaver in Lenape is yameco.

The first Europeans to make contact with the Lenape were Dutch and they tried to use the spelling rules of their own language to capture the name, which corrupted the word into yamecah. Over time, the word transformed into Jamaica.

The Lenape word yameco was…

The country trio formerly known as Lady Antebellum shared the news on The Ellen DeGeneres Show today May 19 before a performance of current single “Like A Lady,” surprising audience members with tickets to the 34-date run, which includes special guests Carly Pearce, Niko Moon and Tenille Arts. “This tour is really going to be about letting our fans know how much they mean to us and what music has done for all of us over the last year…which is the essence of the tour name,” the band’s Charles Kelley said in the announcement. “We started writing a song called ‘What A Song Can Do’ and it turned into a love-letter to our fans.”

“We are gonna soak up these moments on stage more than we ever have before. It’s gonna be hard to wipe the smiles off our faces and I’m sure the tears off of Hillary’s. We were lucky enough to still release new music this past year but there are songs like ‘Champagne Night’ and ‘What If I Never Get Over You’ that we haven’t been able to play live much so we know those will make for some really special moments.”

When art and skate park converge

Outdoor sculpture park Art Omi had already commissioned a large-scale multimedia work by Puerto Rican artist Chemi Rosado-Seijo for early summer 2020. Little did the arts center know how timely the interactive installation would be.

The pandemic hit in March, forcing the closure of most businesses as well as museums and art galleries. Art Omi, located on 120 acres in Columbia County, and recently named one of the best sculpture parks in the country, could accommodate socially distanced crowds and soon became one of the few open art destinations in the Hudson Valley, drawing art lovers and anyone seeking vast outdoor spaces during quarantine.

Sculpture lover or park aficionado? Didn’t matter. Both came – in droves, the arts center said.

And at a time when isolated masses were searching for community, Art Omi proceeded building Rosado-Seijo’s commissioned work: an enormous immersive installation that would soon bring yet another group to the park — skateboarders.

‘Shooting concrete’

Rosado-Seijo, who was included in the Whitney Biennial in New York City in 2017, had already shown an interest in exploring parallels between skateboarding and contemporary art with his series “History on Wheels” and his 2006 sculpture “La Perla’s Bowl.” That work, built with residents of San Juan’s La Perla community, functioned as both a skateboarding ramp and an actual pool.

At Art Omi, his “Mahican Pearl-Hole (the Mahican Bowl)” installation was envisioned to honor and evoke the batéy, a sacred space where the Caribbean’s indigenous Taíno communities gather, meet, play and perform rituals. “The artist wanted to talk about the ancient history of the stone circle,” said curator Nicole Hayes. “The excavated stones that line the bowl talk about that spiritual side.”

Senate panel approves Biden’s first slate of judicial nominees

Washington — The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday approved its first group of President Biden’s judicial nominees, setting up votes from the full Senate on two of his picks to the federal circuit courts and three to the U.S. district courts.

The panel advanced the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the influential U.S. Court of Appeals to the District of Columbia Circuit by a vote of 13 to 9, as well as Candace Jackson-Akiwumi to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals by a near party-line vote of 12-10.

The Democratic-led committee also gave bipartisan approval of the nominations of Judge Zahid Quraishi and Julien Neals to the U.S. district court in New Jersey, and Regina Rodriguez to the federal district court in Colorado.

Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas were the only Republicans to join their Democratic colleagues in supporting Jackson’s nomination, while Graham was the lone GOP senator who voted to advance Jackson-Akiwumi’s nomination.

Jackson, currently a judge on the federal district court in D.C., is considered a frontrunner for the Supreme Court if a vacancy arises. If confirmed by the Senate, she will fill the seat on the D.C. Circuit vacated by now-Attorney General Merrick Garland.

New Franklin restaurant Egg and Cheese serves diner-style breakfast and lunch

FRANKLIN — For some time, Hannah Dupuis has wanted to own her own restaurant. With money she saved up during the pandemic, and a vacant roadside stand, she made her dream a reality.

“I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to be in the food industry, and own my own establishment, and be my own boss,” Dupuis said, as she has spent 12 years as a waitress.

The white and sunny yellow Egg and Cheese stand opened bright and early on Monday, as the hours are 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays. As the name suggests, Egg and Cheese serves breakfast food, like egg sandwiches, and a few lunch options as well, including tuna sandwiches.

Across Connecticut: As reopening happens, there’s a lack of restaurant and hospitality employees

Egg and Cheese recently opened on Route 32 in Franklin.

The stand is located at 892 Route 32 in Franklin, next to Raymond’s Auto Repair. Part of the reason why it’s there is because an employee with the garage offered her the stand, which Dupuis said used to have Spanish food. The other reason is that Dupuis, who is also a Mohegan Sun employee, said many people travel along Route 32 for work, but there are only so many food options along the route.

“I’m looking for quick breakfast food, and the only options really are Dunkin’ Donuts and stuff like that, so I wanted to do something a little bit different,” Dupuis said.

Hannah Dupuis prepares an egg and cheese sandwich at Egg and Cheese, her business that recently opened on Route 32 in Franklin.

Dupuis said she was drawn to diner-style food partly from personally liking it and from it being a style of cooking that doesn’t need many people to make, as the…
