New Kennett Library and Resource Center Officially Opens Its Doors with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Kennett Library and Resource Center.

The new Kennett Library and Resource Center officially opened its doors on Aug. 27 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that drew hundreds of community members and elected officials, writes Richard Gaw for the Chester County Press

The ceremony lasted for four hours. Those who played crucial roles in the making of the two-floor library gave credit to municipalities, trustees, and private and public contributors as well as community members who supported the library’s fundraising campaign.

“This day reflects teamwork, collegiality, empowerment, and vision,” said Thomas Swett, chairman emeritus of the library’s Board of Trustees.

The ceremony kicked off with a ceremonial book being passed from the old library to the new one. It continued with a land acknowledgment ceremony and performance by the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania

The ribbon cutting at the new building was followed by remarks by Board President Bradley Peiper, among many others.

“Our vision now is focused on all the programs and services that this new and expanded space will be able to offer our communities,” he said.

The library is still requiring $1.7 million to reach its fundraising goal.

Massachusetts grants $31.5M to cities, towns, tribes to prepare for climate change

Massachusetts has awarded more than $31.5 million in grants to dozens of cities and towns and to two Native tribes to build climate resilience at the local level.

The funds are part of the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Program, which provides planning grants to assess and mitigate potential climate hazards such as flooding and extreme heat—along with funds to implement these plans. It also helps cities and towns focus on populations that are most affected by the impacts of climate change.

Belchertown, Chesterfield, Chicopee, Deerfield, Goshen, Montague, Northampton and South Hadley, along with the Hassanamisco Nipmuc Band, received planning grants of $95,000 each.

More than a dozen other cities and towns, as well as the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans received “action” grants to implement plans. The Stockbridge-Munsee tribe will use the grant to purchase land that was part of their homelands.

Conway received $279,000 to address flooding. Leyden and Bernardston got $179,200 to assess and mitigate wildfires. West Springfield received $59,000 to create a tree nursery and to plant trees. Closer to Boston, Chelsea received a grant for $315,690 to mitigate heat in elementary schools.

Speaking at the Stockbridge Town Hall on Wednesday, Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll said the grants will protect against future challenges, such as the flooding of farm land.

“Frankly, communities know how to do this best. We’re putting dollars in local hands with locals who know how to solve challenges on the ground that they’re experiencing. The Stockbridge-Munsee Band knows how to do this. Our cities and towns know how to do this,” Driscoll said. “Local knowledge is key.”

The Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians received $2,257,990 to purchase 351 acres of their homelands in Stockbridge. This is the largest parcel of their homelands that the tribe has re-acquired.

Driscoll said traditional ecological knowledge will help…

Nanticoke man charged with sexually assaulting woman

WILKES-BARRE — A man from Nanticoke was arrested by Wilkes-Barre City Police after a woman claimed he raped her along railroad tracks in the area of Carey Avenue and West Division Street Sunday.

Jermaine Lee Crosby, 40, of East Union Street, was arraigned by District Judge Rick Cronauer in Wilkes-Barre on felony charges of rape by force and sexual assault and a misdemeanor count of simple assault. Crosby was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $100,000 bail.

According to the criminal complaint:

A woman receiving medical treatment at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre passed a note in the emergency room claiming she was raped and did not know what to do.

A police officer was summoned to the emergency room where the woman claimed she had been hanging out with Crosby for several weeks.

The woman told police Crosby wanted to have sex but she refused.

Crosby allegedly struck her on the left side of her face, pushed her to the ground and sexually assaulted while he held her down by her throat and shoulders along railroad tracks behind a store at Carey Avenue and West Division Street.

Police in the complaint said the woman’s left eye was swollen.

The woman told police she fought Crosby during the assault, the complaint says.

Police say they recovered a flannel shirt in the area where the alleged sexual assault occurred.

Court records say Crosby was released from the county correctional facility on an unrelated case when he posted $8,000 bail on July 23, related to slashing a woman during an argument about a cellular phone on South Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre, on June 4, 2022.

Crosby is scheduled for trial the week…

A return to the past: Monument Mountain set to revert back to Mohican stewardship

Following today’s historic Stockbridge announcement by Massachusetts Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, Monument Mountain will once again belong to the Indigenous people that settled the area centuries ago.

“The North slope of the land now known as Fenn Farm on Monument Mountain will once again be stewarded by the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of the Mohican Nation,” Driscoll said to a packed Stockbridge Town Hall, part of the ancestral homeland of the Mohican tribe that’s now based in Wisconsin. “That’s not only a meaningful step forward in relation to our history, but [it] also means that Indigenous land management practices and traditional ecological knowledge are going to help us fight and adapt to an ever-growing and present-changing climate future.”

She acknowledged the work done by Stockbridge officials to affect the return of this land.

The change is promulgated by a $31.5 million grant program—the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Program (MVP)—that provides local communities with funding and technical assistance to implement climate resilience projects. Along with 56 different individual municipal grantees, the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans was awarded a $2.26 million grant to reclaim 351 acres of their Indigenous homelands, while implementing tribal conservation and forest management strategies to combat climate change.

“We are celebrating the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans reclaiming land in their ancestral homeland,” Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rebecca Tepper said. “We are also celebrating the concept to have Indigenous land management as a key way to further climate resiliency in our state.”

Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans President Shannon Holsey described the day as “very joyful and emotional” for her community. “We believe that it is our responsibility to be land stewards and to advocate for future generations,” she said. “We are grateful to be home today, and we are grateful to be partners with all of you who made…

Who really owns the United States?

Nowadays, it is common, when introducing an event, to say something along the lines of: “We are grateful to the XYZ Indian Tribe for allowing us to hold this gathering on what is really their land.” Universities, bastions of the left, have been particularly intent upon engaging in this practice. For example, Northwestern University offered this “expression of gratitude and appreciation to those whose territory you reside on, and a way of honoring the Indigenous people who have been living and working on the land from time immemorial.” Here is another instance: “Princeton (University) seeks to build relationships with Native American and Indigenous communities and nations through academic pursuits, partnerships, historical recognitions, community service and enrollment efforts.  These communities and nations include the Lenni-Lenape people, who consider the land on which the University stands part of their ancient homeland.”

Do the American Indians really own the entire country based upon homesteading, mixing their labor with the land? Not at all. There are now some 350 million people in the country, and there are still vast areas of it that have never so much as been touched by human feet, let alone homesteaded as farms, factories or residences. Before the white man came to the continent the best estimate is that there were only 2-3 million native persons in existence (the lowest estimate is less than one million; the highest, 18 million). It is difficult to see how they, alone, could have accomplished any such task.

There is a continuum issue heavily involved in homesteading. How intensively must the land be homesteaded, and for how long, before it can be clearly stated that ownership has been attained? Experts aver that it must be more intense, and less acreage attained for any given amount…
