‘Very survival’ of Iraqi state at risk, UN mission warns

NEW YORK — The UN chief on Monday issued a call for “calm and restraint” in the Iraqi capital Baghdad following a day of reportedly violent protests in and around the national parliament building, in the wake of the announcement from political leader and cleric Muqtada al-Sadr that he was leaving politics.

In a statement issued via his Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, Secretary-General António Guterres said he’d been following events “with concern”, as demonstrators stormed public buildings.

Sadr’s alliance won the majority of seats in last October’s general election, but his parliamentarians resigned en masse after reaching deadlock with a rival Shia bloc over the appointment of a new prime minister, according to news reports.

His supporters have been camped outside the parliament building for weeks, and previously stormed the building to protest the political stalemate and lack of progress.

Several were reported killed during Monday’s clashes after supporters flooded in to the presidential palace.

Guterres urged all involved “to take immediate steps to de-escalate the situation” and avoid further violence.

“The Secretary-General strongly urges all parties and actors to rise above their differences and to engage, without further delay, in a peaceful and inclusive dialogue on a constructive way forward.”

Earlier in the day, the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq, UNAMI, called on all protesters to immediately leave the Baghdad International Zone, vacate government buildings, and “allow the Government to continue its responsibilities or running the State, in service of the Iraqi people.”

UNAMI said the developments marked “an extremely dangerous escalation. State institutions must operate unimpeded in service of the Iraqi people, under all circumstances and at all times. Respect for constitutional order will now prove vital.”

The mission urged all Iraqis to remain peaceful, cooperate with security forces and “refrain from acts that could lead to an unstoppable chain of events.”

UNAMI also calls on all (political) actors…

Clean-up progress slow in wildlife areas following June’s storm

Art Holden  |  Outdoor Correspondent

When a storm with high winds and confirmed tornadoes ripped through Richland, Ashland, Holmes and Wayne counties back in early June, thousands of homeowners were left with tree damages to clean up. Also, three agencies that provide recreational opportunities for tens of thousands of Ohioans were impacted, with the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area severely damaged, as was the Mohican State Forest and the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District’s Pleasant Hill area.

For the three agencies, it’s a conundrum as to how to reopen the areas to the public, while managing how to best clean up the thousands of acres of timber both safely and economically.

Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area manager Dennis Solon has been sickened by the devastation of the woodlands on the Area’s 5,703 acres. While the storm happened June 13, there are trails and roads within the KMWA that are still not opened, and just finding a contractor who even qualifies to do the work is difficult enough, then finding one who has the time is even harder, all while being a good steward of the resources by trying to salvage the value of the downed hardwoods.

Clearing the tangled mess takes more than a comb and brush

One of the problems is the tangled mess created by the leveled trees, with the upper crown of branches and limbs making it difficult, and dangerous, to harvest the tree’s trunk, where the real value in the timber is. It’s been over two months since the storm, and Solon just this past week got a contract with Deer Creek Hardwoods to begin some of the cleanup.

“It takes a specialized crew and equipment to deal with this, to salvage the lumber,” Solon said. “Job 1 is getting Force Road open. They’re making progress, and we’re…

HIGHLANDS HIGHLIGHTS: Delaware River National Park: The culmination of a great idea

This year we will have the opportunity again on Saturday, Sept. 17, in person, to collaborate with many different environmental and tourism supporters. Held at Centenary College in the beautiful Lackland Center, the conference allows many different ideas from varied viewpoints to flow freely between the participants. It’s a rare opportunity to incubate collaborative partnerships and cross pollinate proposals.

The leynote speaker this year will be New Jersey’s Secretary of State, the Honorable Tahesha Way. One of the great ideas being discussed at the conference is the proposed elevation of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DEWA) to a National Park and preserve.

The proposal is sponsored by the Alliance for the Delaware River National Park and Lenape Preserve which is a group of citizens and 23 organizations concerned about our environment, outdoor equity, and the local economy.

The proposal would take the existing federally owned lands in the National Recreation Area (NRA) and divide them into a National Park section of 9,700 acres and a preserve of 56,000 + acres. You can see all the details at the website www.delvalpark.org.

The National Park is envisioned as an emerald, green ribbon along the Delaware River and includes two waterfalls at Dingmans Falls plus the tallest waterfall in Pennsylvania, Raymondskill Falls. On the New Jersey side, the National Park will start above Worthington State Forest and trace Old Mine Road and the river to just below the Dingmans Bridge. A map is available at: https://tinyurl.com/bdfk9yty.

Virtually all present uses will continue uninterrupted, except that hunting will not be allowed within the National Park section. However, the legislation will allow the traditional hunting to be enshrined more completely in the preserve and minimize National Park Service discretion on hunting rights. There will be no impact on state lands, private lands,…

Search and rescue teams working to locate a Nanticoke man reported missing earlier this month found human remains in the area of McDonald Street in Plymouth Township on Saturday.

The victim has not yet been positively identified, according to the Luzerne County Coroner’s office, but the body size and characteristics are consistent with that of Brian Rogozinski, 49, who was reported missing on Aug. 11.

The coroner’s report also notes that the estimated date of death on the body is consistent with the date Rogozinski was reported missing. No suspicious circumstances are noted.

After a search for Rogozinski on Aug. 12 was unsuccessful due to limited resources, volunteer teams from all over the region joined forces with the fire and EMS departments from Nanticoke, Newport Township and Plymouth to comb a large search area.

According to the Nanticoke City Fire Department, the…
