Boys Lacrosse: Pooley Division Player of Year and other postseason honors, 2021

Player of the Year: Drew Togno, Lenape Valley

There were few constants in this game over the past two seasons in New Jersey more impressive than Togno’s scoring productivity.

He played in 36 games as a sophomore in 2019 and in this senior season, and the elusive attackman scored at least once in every game. Considerably more than that in most.

Togno, a Hofstra commit, compiled 78 goals and 30 assists this season to help the Patriots finish 16-2. He scored multiple goals in 16 of those contests, including a staggering seven against No. 3 Mountain Lakes in an 18-9 loss in the North, Group 1 semifinals. As a sophomore, he hit for multple goals in 17 of the 18 games as he helped the squad to an 11-7 mark.

Togno closed his career with 186 goals and 83 assists for 269 points, 69th overall among the state’s all-time scorers.

Coach of the Year: John Lade, Kittatinny

The circumstances in which Lade began as head coach in 2019 were less than ideal. The squad was 14-8 the previous season, though came into that first spring for Lade with almost no experienced players. The roster was primarily populated by sophomore and juniors.

Kittatinny finished a more-than-respectable 8-8 and with high ambitions for a 2020 campaign that would never happen.

Lade called to those sophomores from 2019 for their leadership this spring, and was rewarded by both the on-field play and mature direction of such seniors as Tyler Sweatt, Brendan Voss, Cody Cooper, Andrew Curtis, Dylan Festa, Jake Jones and Christian Shotwell.

The Cougars turned in a 14-4 record this season and reached the quarterfinals of North, Group 1.

Team of the Year: Lenape Valley

The Patriots began the season as one of the hottest in New Jersey by winning their first 11 games, and were not that much cooler by the time…

5 good movies on Amazon for June 30, 2021

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

The horror-comedy Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is a film that doesn’t take much brainpower to watch but is highly entertaining.

The films show two hillbillies, Tucker and Dale, who have purchased their dream home, a run-down cabin in the woods. A group of college kids heads to the same woods to spend some downtime camping.

Tucker and Dale, who don’t have the best social skills, are misunderstood by the college kids. After all, they know the story of the Memorial Day Massacre that was committed 20 years ago by some hillbillies. Of course, they assume the worse about Tucker and Dale, which leads to all sorts of misinformation and accidents.

It is a campy horror film, heavy on comedy. Check it out.

Eurotrip

The film Eurotrip is classified in the sex comedy genre and doesn’t disappoint. It is a guarantee that you will be singing the main song from this film before it is all over.

Scotty (Scott Mechlowicz) gets dumped on graduation day, which…

New Park on Nanticoke River Protects Bay’s Oldest Ferry Site

One of the Chesapeake Bay’s most pristine rivers has a new park for all to enjoy. Nanticoke Crossing Park opened earlier this month outside Seaford, Del.

Sussex County Land Trust and Chesapeake Conservancy partnered on the newly-named 41-acre park. It includes 29 acres of forest, open areas, and 1,900 feet of shoreline with freshwater tidal wetland plants. The partners say it allows for direct access to the Nanticoke River through an old lagoon that will be revitalized for the public to use.

The preservation of the park site provides more access to the Chesapeake National Historic Trail. Captain John Smith explored the Nanticoke in 1608, encountering the Nanticoke Indians, who had lived there for thousands of years.

It also means that the fourth and final corner surrounding the 1740s Woodland Ferry is now protected. One of the nation’s oldest operating ferries, the ferry has carried passengers across the Nanticoke since 1743 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

It took help from the Mt. Cuba Center and even cooperation by the U.S. Navy to allow the conservancy and the land trust to purchase and preserve the parkland in Woodland.

Nanticoke Crossing Park is just one of the ways Chesapeake Conservancy is working to protect the river—in fact, the nonprofit says the Nanticoke is now 33 percent protected. The new park is just downstream from Oyster House Park in Seaford, which the conservancy is also helping to build.

“The Nanticoke River Watershed is now one of the East coast’s best examples of how to achieve President Biden’s intentions in the America the Beautiful initiative to conserve 30% of lands and waters in the United States by 2030,” says President and CEO Joel Dunn.

In the meantime, plans are underway to further promote Nanticoke Crossing Park as a site for local and regional recreation for water access, hiking, and…

Nevada Gaming Commission Lauds Casino Recovery Efforts

The Las Vegas gambling scene is beginning to experience new signs of life following the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Las Vegas Casinos Say They Are Doing Well As They Rebound

On Thursday, two Las Vegas casinos told the Nevada Gaming Commission (NGC) that they are doing well after the industry rebound from the pandemic. That’s a good thing, too, because one of them has to pay a $60,000 fine for violating COVID-19 protocols.

During the meeting, the NGC signed a settlement with the Mohegan Sun Casino in Virgin Hotels Las Vegas for violating the state’s protocols on March 25. The Mohegan Sun, based in Connecticut, operates the new Mohegan Sun Casino at Virgin Las Vegas, which opened in the place of the former Hard Rock Las Vegas.

The new CEO of Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment, Ray Pineault, and the owner of Sahara Las Vegas, Alex Meruelo, were visiting with the commission this week to talk about what’s in store for the casinos as the recovery continued. In addition to settling the violation, and probably, in part, as a result, Pineault was certified as a key executive and manager of the property.

COVID-19 Protocol Violations Lead to Several Fines

The casino’s COVID-19 violations were due to failure of social distancing and mask-wearing measures enforcement. The $60,000 is the largest single fine; however, it is still lower than the $75,000 fine issued last fall for protocol violations at the Sahara and Grand Sierra Resort.

Commission Chairman John T. Moran, Jr. said, “This is a long way away from some of the complaints we saw during this horrible time of COVID. There was outright defiance out there and continual violations. You guys ponied up, and everything went well.” His comments were directed at both Pineault and Meruelo for their respective transgressions.

Nevada’s…

Nanticoke Crossing Park is a tribute to conservation

Delaware’s conservation leadership on the Nanticoke River is a good model for President Biden’s 30 percent by 2030 conservation initiative.

In Executive Order 14008 on Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad, President Biden set a national goal for land conservation: conserve 30 percent of the nation’s lands and waters by 2030. The intent of this goal is to protect one important aspect of what makes our nation so wonderful: its natural beauty, its wildlife, and the natural resources that sustain nature and the American people.

This is an ambitious but timely proposal, especially considering the current estimate that just 12 percent of lands in the United States have some level of protection against development.

Achieving this national 30 by 30 conservation goal to protect America’s nature and wildlife requires us to think and act locally, and to forge partnerships in the community and across government. For a good model to guide his initiative, President Biden need not look further than his own backyard, to the Nanticoke River watershed located in Delaware and Maryland which today is 33 percent protected.

Considering its natural beauty and largely undeveloped waterfront, the Nanticoke River is one of the most pristine rivers of the entire Chesapeake Bay. Many stretches of the river appear today as they did during the pre-colonial era.

The Nanticoke River supports abundant fisheries, and the region is also home to the highest concentration of bald eagles in the northeastern United States.

Take a paddle down river and look just behind the trees – there’s a flurry of activity working to protect the Nanticoke River. Conservation groups, along with the State of Delaware, local governments, the Department of Defense and private philanthropies are working together to ensure that the Nanticoke River watershed remains a natural treasure.

On June 7, Chesapeake…

Alabama on July 23 will be first live concert inside Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre since COVID-19 shutdown

Added on 06/25/2021  NEPA Scene Staff  coronavirus , country , Mohegan Sun Arena , Wilkes-Barre Alabama on July 23 will be first live concert inside Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre since COVID-19 shutdown

From a press release:

The Alabama concert set for Friday, July 23 at 7 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza will be the first live music event hosted inside the Wilkes-Barre Township venue since March 6, 2020. The arena will be at 100 percent capacity per the state of Pennsylvania’s loosening of restrictions on indoor venue capacities.

While it has been a long wait for live music to return, it has been an even longer wait for local fans of these Country Music Hall of Famers. First announced in October of 2018, the Alabama concert was originally postponed after vocalist/guitarist Randy Owen came down with “a severe sinus infection and an infected throat,” then again due to Owen’s “ongoing complications with cluster migraines and vertigo.” It was pushed to Oct. 2, 2020 due to the pandemic, but conditions across the country did not improve enough for the band’s 50th Anniversary Tour to continue at that time.

Additionally, The Charlie Daniels Band was booked to open the Wilkes-Barre show but the 83-year-old singer died of a stroke on July 6, 2020. Special guest Tracy Lawrence will now serve as the opening act.

All tickets purchased for the original performance dates will be honored on July 23. This includes any tickets for the previous dates in 2019 and 2020. A limited number of tickets, which start at $56, are still available at the NBT Bank Box Office at Mohegan Sun Arena (255 Highland Park Blvd.,…

Bellator 261 video: Corey Samuels upsets Isaiah Hokit with 10-second knockout

Corey Samuels gave Isaiah Hokit a rude introduction to professional MMA Friday at Bellator 261 with a lightning-quick knockout.

Samuels (3-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) needed just 10 seconds to flatten massive betting favorite Hokit (0-1 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) with punches, tying the record for the fourth fastest knockout in Bellator history in their lightweight bout at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Check out the replay of the finish below (via Twitter):

Hokit came into Bellator 261 with some hype behind him due to his amateur wrestling background. He didn’t get to showcase any of his grappling game, though. Samuels knocked him out before he could even get going.

For Samuels, it was the first win of his career stemming from strikes. He said he was prepared for Hokit’s wrestling, but was confident he could find the finish before it hit the ground.

“I knew I had the better striking, but we tried to prepare more so for wrestling,” Samuels said in his post-fight interview with John McCarthy. “I wanted to end it with a head kick, but my shin is a little messed up. So we decided to box him up, and that’s what happened.”
