Man City’s Riyad Mahrez gets read the riot act for his blond hair

The last thing a footballer might expect to be berated for on international duty is the colour of his hair, but that’s exactly the fate that’s befallen Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez and West Ham United’s Said Benrahma.

The pair turned up to play in Algeria’s matches, only to be brought back down to earth by manager, Djamel Belmadi, according to Dzair Daily cited by the Daily Star.

It’s said that Belmadi wanted both to “sport a respectable style without frills” and “a look that reflects the traditions and customs of Algerian society,” after they arrived with bleached blond locks

Frankly, the whole scenario is a bit of a nonsense and reminiscent of the time Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that he didn’t sign a player simply because he had a mohican haircut.

MORE: Serious blow for Liverpool

Clearly, there needs to be respect between manager and players, however, making a player dye their hair isn’t going to make them play any better.

Moreover, it could drive an unnecessary wedge in the relationship which, internationally speaking, could have a detrimental effect.

On this occasion both Mahrez and Benrahma acceded to their manager’s wishes in any event.

Cherokee football preview, 2021: Boria expected to lead young, but talented Chiefs

Division: WJFL Continental

Division opponents: Eastern; Kingsway; Rancocas Valley; St. Joseph (Hamm.); Washington Township

Key players: Brandon Boria, RB, Jr.; Aiden Geisenheimer, OL, Sr.; Mike Muckenstrum, LB, Sr.; Bill Westerby, DL/LB, Sr.; Tom Nigro, DL, Sr.; Dom DeChurch, DL, Jr.; Antonio Campbell, DB, Sr.; Tyler Kellenberger, WR, Sr.; Ayden Nelson, LB, Sr.; Holden Wolfort, WR, Sr.; Sean Cole, RB/S, Jr.; Roman Dougherty, LB, Jr.; Jake Ellis, OL, Jr.; Brian Mitchell, DB, Jr.; Tom Pajic, WR, So.; Cam Burti, WR, Jr.; Ryan Bender, QB, So.

Outlook: The Chiefs lost several key players to graduation but return a talented young group looking to compete for a division title and make another postseason run.

They lost their final two games of last season by a combined four points – a three-point overtime setback to district rival Lenape in the WJFL Pod A semifinals and a one-point loss to Non-Public power St. Joseph (Mont.). Those setbacks will surely motivate this team as it navigates what looks to be a highly competitive regular-season schedule.

Cherokee will feature one of the state’s top returning running backs in Brandon Boria, who rushed for 888 yards and 11 touchdowns in six games. He collected a career-high 267 rushing yards on 35 carries along with two touchdown runs, a 3-yarder and a blistering 82-yard jaunt, in a loss to district rival Lenape.

Expect this group to be strong along the lines and complete on a weekly basis. There’s no reason why Cherokee can’t be in the conversation for division honors and a postseason berth.

2021 schedule:

Sept. 2: Lenape

Sept. 10: St. Joseph (Hamm.)

Sept. 24: Washington Township

Oct. 1: at Eastern

Oct. 8: Shawnee

Oct. 16: at Rancocas Valley

Oct. 22: Kingsway

TBA: Seneca

Distasio Scoreboard Dedication Ceremony Moved on September 17th

Nanticoke — The new scoreboard dedication ceremony to commemorate former coach Dandy Stacio has been postponed until September 17 due to electrical problems with the football field.

Distasio died in 2006 at the age of 73.

The late coach’s son, Dan Distacio, said the money donated to the scoreboard was raised through the 13-year Daniel Distacio Memorial Golf Tournament in honor of the coach.

“The funds were used to award scholarships to worthy students in Nanticoke and Crestwood,” said Vistasio. “Over the years, we have been awarded over $ 60,000 in scholarships, after which it was decided that the rest of the money would be donated to Nanticoke, which he remembers.”

After discussions with school officials, Vistasio said the school needed a scoreboard upgrade and the funds were donated to the school.

“The final decision to donate was made by our family, but it is important to understand that donations were made possible only by the generosity, effort and support of many of our friends over the years.” Distasio said. “Without the support of many people, we wouldn’t have been able to donate.”

The Distasio family wanted to clarify the donation process.

Coach Distasio served in the Navy for two years and in the Marine Corps for two years. After earning a bachelor’s degree from King’s College, he continued to earn the same qualifications as a master’s degree.

Distasio has been a teacher at Nanticoke High School for 33 years and a former football coach for 12 years. He also coached women’s volleyball, truck and Wilkes linebackers.

Distasio graduated from Nanticoke High School in 1950, where he played quarterbacks and basketball on a soccer team.

Connecticut’s Sports Betting Competition Is Heating Up

As legal sports betting is at the doorstep in Connecticut and is set to debut next month, the market will no longer be a duopoly in which the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes control the market. The competition will now be three-way, as the Connecticut Lottery Corp. will be another major player. This quasi-public agency was authorized to operate in as many as 15 retail sportsbook locations around Connecticut.

The Lottery Will Offer Sports Betting in Numerous Locations

The lottery will provide visitors with sportsbook services at ten of the 11 Sportech brick-and-mortar facilities. Some of the properties that are included are Bobby V’s restaurant at the Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, as well as its Stamford location. Sports Haven in New Haven and seven Winners locations in the state will also see sportsbooks.

Furthermore, Hartford and Bridgeport are two of the total of 15 venues where the lottery must set up shop, and none of them is allowed to be in the vicinity of Mohegan or Mashantucket reservations. That vicinity is 25 miles.

The no-compete zones were actually a small price that the lottery had to pay in order for tribes not to demand exclusive rights to sports betting in the state of Connecticut and that started the process of negotiating a deal between the Mohegans, the Mashantuckets, and Gov. Ned Lamont concerning landmark gaming expansion.

Rodney Butler, the chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, stated that this deal was major during a Friday interview and acknowledged the fact that Rush Street Interactive and the lottery will be fierce competitors on the market.

Land-Based Sports Betting Will be The Lottery’s Advantage

Connecticut Lottery Corp.’s contributions have gone beyond the payments that casinos make for slot revenue in each fiscal year so far, starting from 2012-2013. The corporation…

Pleasant Hill Lake provides a treasure trove of fishing, boating opportunities

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story was originally published by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

PERRYSVILLE — Pleasant Hill Lake is located on the Richland-Ashland County line, approximately 2 miles southwest of Perrysville. The boat ramp and marina are on Covert Road off State Route 95.

The marina is north of the Mohican State Park.

RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy operates and maintains the recreational facilities located on the north side of the reservoir. A beach, vacation cottages, marina, campground, parking area, picnic area, sanitary facilities, and boat ramp are located on the northern shore of the reservoir. The marina has a concession stand and gasoline dock.

The Mohican State Park is located on the southern shore of the reservoir and provides numerous recreational opportunities on and around the Pleasant Hill Reservoir. Mohican State Park operates a lodge overlooking the southern shore in the bend of the reservoir.

There is both primitive and improved camping in the state park, south of the reservoir, on the Clear Fork River. For information of Mohican State Park facilities, contact 419/994-4290. The reservoir is also open to waterfowl hunting during the fall.

HISTORY

The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) owns Pleasant Hill Lake. The lake was constructed in 1938 by damming the Clear Fork Branch of the Mohican River. The lake was originally constructed primarily for flood control in the Muskingum River watershed.

Today, recreation is one of the biggest public benefits. The ODNR Division of Wildlife manages the lake under agreement to provide public fishing and hunting.

The Clear Fork River empties into the western end of the lake. This western end of the lake is shallow with most of the area under less than 10 feet of water. The middle section of the lake gradually slopes to a depth of 20 feet. At that point…

Newton football preview, 2021: Lofty expectations for experience-laden Braves

Newton Braves

Coach: Matt Parzero, 5th season (44-7 at Newton, 90-33 overall)

Last year: 6-0

2021 Starting SI rating: 75.52

Division: Super Football Conference, National Red

Division opponents: Hackettstown, High Point, Kittatinny, Lenape Valley, Sussex Tech, Vernon

Key players: Jack Young, QB/DB/P, Sr.; Brayden Nolan, RB/LB, Jr.; Matt Iatesta, OL/DL, Sr.; Melkart Abou-Jaoude, TE/DE, Sr.; Robert McCullough, K/DB/QB, Jr.

Outlook: A sense of familiarity from last year’s unbeaten season has Newton looking not only like one of Sussex County’s best but in the conversation of one of the top teams in Group 2 this season.

As a Group 2 team, several players will be playing on both sides of the ball but with several returning starters—6 on offense, 7 on defense—to go along with a plethora of upperclassmen looking to break through in a big way, there won’t be any learning curve to figure out for the Braves.

Newton’s biggest contributor is the leader on both sides of the ball in Jack Young, serving as the Braves’ quarterback and top defensive back. His brother, Luke, was able to lead Newton to the sectional title in 2017 and Jack has a chance to cement his own legacy in Sussex County as another dual-threat quarterback running the show for Newton.

Overall the Braves may find its most familiar group along the trenches. Newton returns 4 of its starting offensive linemen from last year in Matt Iatesta, Matt McLean, Rylan Ivaldi and Melkart Abou-Jaoude and 2 more along the defensive line in About-Jaoude and Brody Guerra.

Newton also expects to have a strong rushing attack at its disposal once more with Brayden Nolan leading the charge with newcomers Taylor Sibblies, Matt May and Donato Bevaqua looking to take some of the rushing load as well.

2021 Schedule

  • 9/3 at Sparta
  • 9/10 vs. Vernon
  • 9/18 at Sussex Tech
  • 9/24 vs. Jefferson
  • 10/1 vs. Kittatinny
  • 10/8 at Hackettstown
  • 10/15 at High Point
  • 10/22 vs. Lenape…

Indigenous community comes together to mark Overdose Awareness Day

CHIPPEWAS OF THE THAMES FIRST NATION – Dozens of people gathered Tuesday in this Indigenous community southwest of London to mark Overdose Awareness Day.

About 50 people gathered at the site of a former residential school for the walk, part of an international event intended to honour people who’ve died or been affected due to drug overdoses.

“This is a small piece of our healing and we have a long way to go,” said Gloria Boutcher of the Cultural Outreach Harm Reduction team at Chippewa Health Centre, which organized the local event.

“We’re all connected and interconnected across Turtle Island. Every community suffers from high numbers of overdose, addiction and trauma.

“To end overdose, we need to meet people where they’re at.”

Boutcher’s team provides supports and services to people who are dealing with substance abuse. It serves three First Nations communities: Chippewas of the Thames, Munsee-Delaware First Nation, and Oneida Nation of the Thames.

Tuesday’s event began with a sunrise ceremony, followed by a breakfast and two-kilometre walk from the Mount Elgin Residential School monument to Chippewa Ball Park. It closed with a sharing circle, where some participants shared their stories of strength and healing in defeating drug overdose.

Though recognized on an international scale, the event hits home for many in the First Nations communities.

Amber MacDougall, of Oneida Nation of the Thames, didn’t just survive drug overdose, she overcame it. The 34-year-old said she’s been in recovery for the past 10 years.

“I know several people struggling with addiction and some who have passed,” Logan said. “I’m really glad people are bringing awareness to this issue,” she added, as she embarked on the two-kilometre walk.

School starting with complete masking of the K-8 in the Greater Nanti Cork area

NANTICOKE — Due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in Luzerne County, students in school districts in the Nanticoke area and staff in grade K-8 are required to wear face masks at the beginning of the grade. Start of regular monthly school board meetings on Thursday.

The upper grades have the option of wearing a mask, but it is advisable to do so. A mask is required for all grades of the school bus.

After the meeting, Grebera said last year that a vaccine for young children would soon be approved so that young students could wear masks without problems and they could get protection that could make masks optional. He said he wanted to be done.

Grebera also said that the district’s efforts to bring students from external cyber charter schools back to the district have begun to pay off, with at least 40 students returning to the district so far. He said he expects the number to increase. Over 50 by the time school starts. Most years, the district had about 80 students on an external charter, but last year it surged to about 170.

During the voting session, the board did the following:

• Allowed JHA companies to conduct additional hydrological and hydrological drainage surveys at soccer stadiums at a cost of $ 3,600. Grebera said it was part of a stadium upgrade paid with a state subsidy. There is no immediate drainage problem, but a significant amount of rainwater flows through the pipes towards the stadium. This move is intended to ensure that the system is in place to avoid potential problems.

• Accepted a quote from McGraw Hill and continued the Wonders Reading Series for eight years at a cost of $ 272,465.

• Zachary Cardone and Wesley Ravert have…
