Hackettstown Field Hockey Team ‘Aims To Do Well In Conference, Division,’ With 3-3 Start

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ — The Hackettstown field hockey team is off to a solid start and hopes to do as well in the postseason as it has the last several years.

“We have been playing pretty well so far this year,” said Rachael Gorski, who is in her third year as head coach after being an assistant coach for three years. “We are 3-3 right now with losses to strong teams: Warren Hills, Lenape Valley, and Vernon.”

Hackettstown earned the fourth seed in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament and earned a first-round bye. The team will take on No. 13 Vernon in the second round on Oct. 2. The Tigers last won the championship in 2018.

The team’s captains, senior Amy Wood and junior Ali Cetani; goalie Emily Newton; and sophomore forwards Kiara Koeller and Skyler Sciaretta are leading the team.

“Our captains are competent leaders, and our goalie has also been emerging as a leader in the back,” Gorski said. “Kiara Koeller and Skyler Sciaretta lead by example during practice and on the field.”

The Tigers’ first victory came over Newton, 2-1, on Sept. 11.

“Against Newton, Skyler Sciaretta returned from an injury late in regulation―which left her with a black eye―to score the game-winning goal in overtime,” Gorski said.

Koeller scored the team’s other goal, while Newton made 10 saves.

The Tigers defeated High Point, 2-1, on Sept. 18 and Wallkill Valley, 1-0, on Sept. 20.

Sciaretta and Koeller also scored the team’s goals against High Point. Newton made six saves. Emma Patton scored the team’s only goal against Wallkill Valley. Newton again made six saves in the victory.

Gorski said the Tigers are a young team.

“We are a young team with only three seniors,” she said. “This is also the first year in our program that we have been…

Connecticut Sportsbook Operators Submit Soft Launch Plans

With Connecticut on the cusp of sports betting, three operators are preparing for soft launches.

The state’s Department of Consumer Protection confirmed Tuesday that DraftKings, BetFair (FanDuel) and Rush Street Interactive have all submitted proposals for how they plan to conduct a soft launch in Connecticut.

No date has been announced for when that soft launch might take place, but all three filed the 10-day notice by law and a seven-day soft launch period is projected to start around Sept. 30. The official live date is expected to be Oct. 7.

Just last week, Paul Mounds, chief of staff to Gov. Ned Lamont, said that live sports betting would begin on Oct. 7.

If Connecticut makes its target date, residents would be able to bet on the Week 5 NFL games.

UConn men’s college basketball is set to begin its regular season on Nov. 9 as the Huskies start a four-game homestand against Central Connecticut State.

Online casinos will likely take a little longer to launch in Connecticut. In addition to their sportsbooks, DraftKings Casino and FanDuel Casino will offer online casino games in the state.

Where To Bet In Connecticut

Bettors will have three options to place their wagers once Connecticut launches its sports betting operations.

FanDuel Sportsbook is partnered with the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville. DraftKings Sportsbook has partnered with Foxwoods in Mashantucket. Rush Street Interactive reached a deal with the Connecticut Lottery to enter the market. Rush Street operates Sugarhouse Sportsbook, which is expected to be the brand in Connecticut. It also has the BetRivers brand.

An early October launch would conclude what has been a quick turnaround from when Lamont signed sports betting and online casino gaming into law on May 27. The Department of Consumer Protection then set the rules and started the application process for operators. Meanwhile,…

H.S. Football: Nanticoke Area’s defense holds strong to edge Susquehanna

NANTICOKE — Nanticoke Area’s defense came up with a fourth-down stop late in the fourth quarter and a missed extra point earlier in the game helped the Trojans earn their first win of the season, defeating Susquehanna 7-6 on Friday night.

Zack Fox’s 60-yard touchdown run in the first quarter proved to be the difference, and the Trojans’ defense closed out the game in the fourth.

With 6:11 left on the clock and the ball on the Susquehanna 3-yard line, the Trojans decided to go for it on fourth down to build on their one-point lead. After struggling to stop the Trojans run game throughout the night, the Sabers stood their ground and pushed Zach Fox back a yard as Nanticoke turned the ball over on downs.

Susquehanna took possession 96 yards away from the end zone with both team looking for that elusive first win of the season. Susquehanna would convert its first two fourth-down attempts on the drive but ultimately fell short as Colton Stone’s fourth-and-10 pass to J.J. Rosa was out of reach.

Fox got the Trojans on board on their second offensive play of the game. Fox would find intermittent success through the rest of the night as he failed to reach the line of scrimmage on eight rushing attempts in the game but still finished with 105 yards.

The Trojans changed up their running this week with a two-headed attack with Fox and Mykal Julian. The tandem would finish with a combined 226 yards on the ground.

The Sabers offense struggled in the first half as they would only run two plays in the opposition’s half. Late in the half Susquehanna looked poised to knot the score up heading into the break, but a Rosa fumble ended…
