CHANGING FORMS: METAMORPHOSIS IN MYTH, ART, AND NATURE OPENS AT THE FRANCES LEHMAN LOEB ART CENTER

CHANGING FORMS: METAMORPHOSIS IN MYTH, ART, AND NATURE OPENS AT THE FRANCES LEHMAN LOEB ART CENTER

POUGHKEEPSIE – Vassar College’s Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center will present the exhibition Changing Forms: Metamorphosis in Myth, Art, and Nature, 1650–1700, on view September 28 through December 19, 2021 in the Loeb’s Focus Gallery.

The exhibition, curated by Dr. Elizabeth Nogrady, Andrew W. Mellon Curator of Academic Programs at the Loeb, and Dr. Lara Yeager-Crasselt, Curator of The Leiden Collection, brings together approximately twenty paintings, drawings, prints, specimens, and illustrated books to explore the rich and varied concept of “metamorphosis” in the late seventeenth-century Netherlands. With links to art, myth, science, and the exchange of knowledge, metamorphosis provides a vital lens through which to explore and understand an evolving early modern world.

Changing Forms focuses on the idea of metamorphosis at a dynamic moment in the late 1600s, when the notions of myth, art, and science converged in new, urgent ways. Painters such as Godefridus Schalcken, Willem van Mieris, and Samuel van Hoogstraten created their own mythological imagery with the more refined and elegant language of classicism. This tradition will be demonstrated in the exhibition by works such as Samuel van Hoogstraten’s Salmacis and Hermaphroditus (ca. 1671–76), which has never before been shown in a museum exhibition, as well as paintings of the goddess Diana by Godefridus Schalcken and Willem van Mieris, all on loan from The Leiden Collection, the preeminent private collection of Dutch art in the United States.

At the same time, the exhibition demonstrates how contemporaries explored biological metamorphosis in lavishly illustrated insect studies. Key books to emerge in this context were Johannes Goedaert’s Metamorphosis naturalisand Maria Sibylla Merian’s Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, which amassed new knowledge from Indigenous and enslaved people in South America. These stunning books come from Vassar collections and include significant…

River Days

This year, for so many reasons, people have sought solace in the outdoors and found a new, or renewed connection with nature.  During September and October, the 23 environmental centers that make up the Alliance for Watershed Education of the Delaware River (AWE) will host family-friendly activities as part of the organization’s annual River Days festivities, to help bring people together safely for environmentally-focused events.

Visitors to AWE centers this fall will also be AWEd by the Water Spirit sculpture installations found at many sites throughout the watershed. The site-specific series, made entirely of plant material, was created by Seattle-based environmental artist Sarah Kavage, in collaboration with local artists. All AWE centers will also offer visitors free decks of Aqua Marooned! a card game created by Philly-based immersive experience company Swim Pony that encourages emotional connection with flora and fauna. The game’s beautifully illustrated cards cast players as extraterrestrial explorers sent to explore earth’s mysterious “watersphere.” Both projects are part of arts initiative Lenapehoking~Watershed: a place for water art and culture

The myth of foreign monitors in Iraq’s election – World

Next month’s parliamentary election is probably the most dramatic in Iraq’s recent history. Given the highly partisan atmosphere at a time of “conflict fatigue”, a meaningful and effective election is crucial for the nation’s stability and its dysfunctional democracy.

But disputed ballot and contested outcome will certainly lay the groundwork in the following weeks or months for further political upheaval and an outbreak of new popular protests similar to the uprising that toppled the government in 2019.

Every Iraqi election since the overthrow of the regime of former dictator Saddam Hussein has been marred by allegations of fraud and irregularities. Together with regional and international stakeholders, Iraqis fear that the October election could be a tipping point for the future.

To help ensure a successful poll while battling voters’ mistrust and fighting one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in the Middle East, the government of Mustafa Al-Kadhimi is inviting international observers to oversee the ballots.

But while the government can see real value in foreign observers giving the poll a legal cover, many Iraqis remain sceptical about whether international observers can provide an objective means of validating the election to rescue Iraq’s tortured democracy.

Still, much of the outcome depends on the United Nations Political Mission in Iraq, UNAMI, which is empowered by numerous UN Security Council resolutions to “assist in the electoral process” and help “towards free and fair Iraqi-led elections that are inclusive.”

Last month the 15-member council unanimously approved an Iraqi request for a UN team to monitor the elections. A resolution it adopted authorised UNAMI to “provide a strengthened, robust and visible UN team” to monitor Iraq’s election day “with as broad a geographic coverage as possible.”

The UN is expected to deploy some 130 international experts to monitor the polls, along…
