Celia Jennings

Celia Jennings, 70, of Nanticoke, passed into eternal life Friday, Oct. 1, 2021.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, the love of her life, Richard Jennings.

She was born July 29, 1951, the daughter of the late Harry Bloom and Anna Rustay Bloom.

Celia was a member of St. Faustina Kowalska Church, Nanticoke, and spent many years as a crossing guard at the former Pope John Paul Il School, Nanticoke.

Celia loved sitting on her front porch chatting with neighbors, with her Richie sitting by her side, and was always so proud of her grandchildren’s accomplishments. When you entered her home, you could bet there would be a classic western TV show or movie on the TV. She had a strong faith in God and always told others to place their faith with him as well. Her favorite time of year was Christmas, when she loved to shower her family with gifts. No one could wrap presents quite like her.

She is survived by her children, son, Arthur McDonnell; daughters, Anissa Jennings; and Susan Carey and husband, Shawn Carey; her grandchildren, her absolute pride and joy in life, Keri Wasilewski; Shawn Carey Jr.; Samara Carey; Ricky Carey and Nicholas Carey; great-granddaughter, Haiden Wasilewski; sister, Anna Mae Backley; brothers, Wayne Bloom and wife, Charlotte Bloom; and Harry Bloom Jr. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who affectionately referred to her as Aunt Sis.

In addition to her parents, Harry and Anna Bloom, she was preceded in death by sister, Sylvia Backley; brother, Larry Bloom; and brother-in-law, James Backley.

A funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from Kielty-Moran Funeral Home Inc., 87 Washington Ave., Plymouth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Faustina Kowalska Catholic Church, 520 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke.

UN calls for free, transparent elections in Iraq

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said Tuesday it expects the upcoming Iraqi elections to be free, transparent, and free from foreign interference.

“All our efforts are to ensure that there are no doubts in the elections,” Jeanine Antoinette Plasschaert, the head of UNAMI, told a press conference in the capital Baghdad.

He noted that UNAMI will deploy 877 international and local observers to ensure irregularities of the 2018 polls are not repeated.

“The same things that were done in 2018 will not be repeated. It is important that these elections are different from the 2018 polls,” Plasschaert stressed, in an effort to assure the Turkmen and Arabs in Iraq’s northern Kirkuk province.

Elections in the oil-rich country are scheduled for Oct. 10.

On Friday, prominent Iraqi Shia politician Muqtada al-Sadr warned against external interference in the elections, in reference to Iran.

Plasschaert admitted that elections will not bring miracles or cause radical change but said it will help establish a government that can make concrete changes.

UNAMI also promised to assume a neutral stance in the elections and to treat all Iraqi sides equally.

Commenting on reports that the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) candidates who went to Sinjar to prepare for the vote were denied entry by the PKK terrorists, Plasschaert said he supported the candidates’ right to meet voters.

Figures from the Iraqi Electoral Commission in July showed that 3,249 candidates representing 21 coalitions and 109 parties, as well as independent candidates, will run for seats in the 329-seat parliament.

The polls were originally scheduled to be held in 2022, but Iraq’s political parties have decided to hold early elections following mass protests that erupted in the country in 2019 against deep-seated corruption and poor services.

Sports betting goes live in yet another state bordering Massachusetts

Colin A. Young  |  State House News Service

In-person sports betting began Thursday in Connecticut, giving New Englanders another option for placing legal wagers on Tom Brady’s long-anticipated return to Foxboro on Sunday.

As the Massachusetts Senate considers the legalization of sports betting again this session, the activity has now been approved in every state bordering Massachusetts besides Vermont.

The Massachusetts House approved a sports betting bill this summer, but the Senate, where the bill has not drawn outright opposition, has consistently shown less interest in the idea and has the House bill under the review of its Ways and Means Committee.

Holding out: Massachusetts is one of the last states in New England without sports betting. For now.

Connecticut’s rollout began with in-person betting at temporary sportsbooks at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino, both in the eastern part of the state and relatively accessible from Massachusetts by interstates 395 and 95.

Mohegan Sun said adults 21 and older can place bets. Mobile and online wagering for the Nutmeg State remains a week away, according to The Day newspaper.

The launch of retail betting comes early in the NFL season and coincides with Brady’s first game against the New England Patriots and Bill Belichick.

Patriots loyalists, Brady fans and everyone in between can also travel to Rhode Island or New Hampshire to plunk down cash on Sunday night’s game.

Rolling the dice: Massachusetts state representatives approve sports betting

Rhode Island’s sports betting website featured a series of Brady/Rob Gronkowski prop bets Thursday morning and listed Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers as 7-point favorites.

When the Massachusetts House nearly unanimously approved its sports betting bill in July, state Rep. Jerald Parisella pointed out the neighboring states that offer and profit from the activity while illicit gambling still attracts bettors here.

“We’re surrounded,” Parisella, who chairs the Committee on Economic Development, said.

Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp down for hours

All of the apps went down Monday around noon and didn’t come back online until almost 7 p.m. on Monday.

SCRANTON, Pa. — If you couldn’t access Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp Monday, you weren’t the only one.

The worldwide outage that affected billions started around noon on Monday.

So, how were people feeling about the outage? Newswatch 16 took to Scranton to find out.

“I’m supposed to be on social media actively, but it’s down, and I don’t know what to. I’m so lost. I’m walking with no destination. I don’t know where to go. I’m making circles,” said Yousif Almomen, Nanticoke.

Some even thought the app was being faulty.

“My first initial reaction was the wifi here is bad. No way is Instagram down. All of me and friends at the lunch table were all refreshing to see if it would come up, but it wasn’t, so eventually, we were like Instagrams down and put it away,” said Marco Colasurdo, University of Scranton.

Others who use the platforms as a means of advertising the outage posed challenges.

“It affects me in the way that it’s inconvenient because I’m supposed to promote my music and my merchandise, so it definitely has that negative aspect,” said James Barrett, Clarks Summit.

Other social media sites, like Twitter, benefitted from the outage. Twitter, even noticing it, tweeting out, “hello literally everyone.”

“I think I was able to look at a lot of other different apps and use different forms of social media to learn things. Whereas normally I’d get all my information from Instagram,’ said Anthony Rizzi, a student at the University of Scranton.

All three platforms came back online nearly six hours later.

Those we spoke with say the outage shows just…

Manhunt as muggers target elderly woman at cashpoint

Police say they are hunting to men who robbed an elderly woman on her mobility scooter as she took cash from an ATM at the Lloyds Bank in Plymstock.

Investigators say the elderly woman on a mobility scooter approached the cashpoint machine, which sits at the corner of the Broadway shopping centre and Dean Hill, at 8.20am this morning.

Moments after she took the money she was approached by two men who snatched the money and fled on foot through the Broadway, turned right into the covered path which leads to the main car park and then to the middle of the car park where they got into a blacked BMW 3 or 5 series estate. The car had blacked out windows at the rear of the vehicle.

The first suspect was described as being in his mid 20s to early 30s, wearing a navy blue hooded jacket, hair hair cut very short at the sides and longer on top – almost a mohican-style – a pair of grey tracksuit bottoms and trainers.

The second man was of a similar age, more stocky, wearing a light or light grey coloured hoodie, dark trousers. Police believe he is of Eastern European appearance with slightly darker skin and stubble.

The first male arrived back at the car first while the second man appeared to take his time and arrive a few moments later.

Police believe that there were a number of people around the area at the time, including schoolchildren and parents, who may have seen part of the incident or the two men racing through the town, or even which route out of the car park the men took.

A police spokesperson…

Oberlander, Munsee Urge Drivers to Turn in Illegible License Plates

100591312_3624866794206897_748594443002576896_nCLARION, Pa. – Rep. Donna Oberlander (R-Clarion/Armstrong/Forest) recently reminded drivers that if their vehicle license plate is difficult to read, that replacement plates are available for free.

To help facilitate the process to turn in the illegible plate for a new one, Oberlander is teaming up with Clarion County Sheriff Rex Munsee for a special event on Tuesday, October 19, at her district office.

“Just like other parts of a vehicle, license plates are susceptible to damage and weather, and sometimes the letters and numbers can be difficult to read over time,” Oberlander said.

“Most motorists are unaware that replacement plates are available at no additional cost from PennDOT, and my office will help facilitate that process for affected drivers.”

From 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19, drivers can bring their vehicles to the parking lot at Oberlander’s office along South Second Avenue to begin the replacement process. While there, personnel from the Clarion County Sheriff’s Office will determine if the plate is illegible, and if so, Oberlander’s staff will help drivers fill out the appropriate paperwork. A notary will be on site to assist.

Once submitted to PennDOT, the new replacement plates should arrive from Oberlander’s office in approximately two weeks.

According to PennDOT, a registration plate is deemed illegible when one or more numbers or letters cannot be recognized from 50 feet or if the registration plate shows any blistering, peeling, discoloration, or loss of reflectivity. When a registration plate becomes illegible, PennDOT has two main ways of replacing them. First, the law allows PennDOT to reissue a registration plate upon request of a vehicle owner when an authorized representative of PennDOT or law enforcement determines that a registration plate is illegible.

“We daily see many license plates that are not readable,” said Munsee. “This program…
