Iraq: UN condemns assassination attempt on Prime Minister ‘in the strongest terms’

According to news reports, the exploding drone caused damage to the residence and several of the Prime Minister’s security guards were injured in the attack.

Mr. al-Kadhimi, was sworn into office in May last year.

The Green Zone houses Government offices and many foreign embassies. No group has so far claimed any responsibility for the attack and remains from the explosive-laden drone have been recovered, as part of an on-going investigation.

“The Mission expresses its relief that the Prime Minister was not hurt in the drone attack”, said the UNAMI statement.

In a statement, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, also strongly condemned the attack, and called for the perpetrators “of this crime, to be held accountable.”

“The Secretary-General calls on all Iraqis to exercise utmost restraint and reject all violence and any attempts to destabilize Iraq. He urges all political actors to uphold the constitutional order and resolve differences through peaceful and inclusive dialogue.”

No place for terrorism, violence

“Terrorism, violence and unlawful acts must not be allowed to undermine Iraq’s stability and derail its democratic process”, it continued.

The attack has been condemned by both the Government of Iran, and the United States.

On Friday, protests outside the Green Zone, against the results of the last month’s parliamentary elections turned violent, as demonstrators clashed with security forces, reportedly accusing Iraq’s political elite of rigging the vote.

One protester was reportedly killed, and dozens of security personnel were injured. The Prime Minister has ordered an investigation into what led to the violence.

Turnout for the election was low, with just 41 per cent turning out to vote, and supporters of pro-Iranian parties and militias, lost ground, according to preliminary results. Protesters are reportedly calling for the Government, and Iraq’s independent electoral commission, to hold a recount.

Call for restraint

The UN…

For Years, People Said There Were No Lenape Left in Pennsylvania. This Group Begs to Differ.

Longform

The Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania is fighting for governmental recognition — despite pushback from other Lenape tribes — raising big questions about who gets to call themselves Native and how the state views its history.

Lenape tribal member Rick Quiet Hawk Welker, photographed at a powwow at Mauch Chunk Lake. Photograph by Kevin York

It’s a muggy mid-September Sunday, and kayakers and vacationing families are taking in the calm waters of Mauch Chunk Lake, a small reservoir in the southern Poconos. While beachgoers lounge on the sand and watch eagles cruise above the trees, another group is gathered a few hundred yards up the shore for an even more traditional lakeside activity: a Native American powwow. The reverberation of drumbeats, along with the smell of burning sage and barbecue, hangs in the humid air, floating across the parking lot between the powwow and the beach.

Many of the people dancing, chatting and celebrating at the powwow claim ancestral connections to the Lenape (leh-NAH-pay), the Indigenous people of the Delaware Valley. Some are dressed in full regalia, wearing head-to-toe beads and painted feathers, attracting stares from those who came to Mauch Chunk Lake for swimming or a hike. They gawk, open-mouthed. Some take pictures. It’s as if the last thing they expected to see on their weekend trip to the Poconos was the people who lived here first.

It’s a common belief that there are no longer any Lenape (sometimes called Delaware Indians, the name given to them by European colonists) in Pennsylvania. It is widely presumed that every single Lenape person was forcibly relocated to…

H.S. Football: Nanticoke Area defeats Schuylkill Valley for Eastern Conference 3A title

NANTICOKE — Overcoming the early November chill in the air, the Nanticoke Area Trojans held on to defeat the visiting Schuylkill Valley Panthers 21-14 to take home the title on their home field in the Eastern Conference Class 3A championship game on Friday night.

With the triumph, Nanticoke, which started its season 0-4, finished 5-6. Schuylkill Valley ended 2-9 with its sixth consecutive loss.

Shaking off a slow start that saw Nanticoke Area quarterback Payton Kepp throw a costly interception, Trojans came roaring back with their powerful rushing attack on offense to start the game’s scoring just eight seconds into the second quarter.

Kepp took the quarterback sneak and barreled his way into the end zone from 2 yards out to give the Trojans a 7-0 advantage with 11:52 remaining in the opening half. Nanticoke Area’s next score came with only 50.1 seconds left before the halftime, as sophomore tailback Zach Fox scampered into the end zone from 3 yards away to give the Trojans a 13-0 lead.

Just when the contest looked like it was heading towards blowout territory, Schuylkill Valley showed tremendous resiliency.

The Panthers connected on an improbable fourth-and-7 from their own 37-yard line senior signal caller Drew Campbell found Colby Crills down the right sidelines for a 63-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 13-7 with 10:36 left in the third quarter.

However, Nanticoke would come right back to snatch the game’s momentum when Fox scored his second rushing touchdown of the night, this time from 5 yards out, to increase the Trojans lead to 21-7 with only 1:51 remaining in the third period.

In the fourth quarter, the Schuylkill Valley put quite a scare into Nanticoke Area when junior quarterback Michael Goad converted a fourth-and-4, connecting…

Bartlesville Area History Museum launches Third Thursday evening hours

Staff reports  |  Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise

The Bartlesville Area History Museum will begin its latest Third Thursday series from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 18, which provides evenings hours at the museum on the third Thursday of each month.

“Life gets busy during the week,” says Museum Coordinator Delaney Williams, “It’s hard for some people to find time during the day to visit the Museum. We wanted to provide time for people who cannot make it during the day to have a chance to check out the history that makes Bartlesville so interesting.”

There will be guided tours of the main gallery, beginning at 6:15 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Guests are also welcome to explore the museum at their own pace.

Williams said the evening will be an excellent time to check out the special exhibit “Delaware: The Faces of the Lenape” before it ends on Nov. 26. The Nelson Carr One-Room Schoolhouse will also be open for visitors to explore and light refreshments will be served.

“This is something we hope to continue doing,” said Williams. “We are planning another Third Thursday event with a Christmas theme on December 17th, if you aren’t able to make this one.”

For more information, you can contact the Bartlesville Area History Museum at (918) 338-4290 or history@cityofbartlesville.org. The Museum is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM and is located on the 5th floor of City Hall at 401 S. Johnstone Ave.

Irv Oslin: Floating the idea of retiring from retirement

Retirement done right. Relaxing at campsite on the Mohican River.

Retirement done right. Relaxing at campsite on the Mohican River.

Being retired can be hard work. If you let it.

Which I did.

More: Irv Oslin: Keep your gear from bungee jumping during a capsize

Seems I made the mistake a lot of retirees do; I allowed God and everybody to find work for me after I retired eight years ago.

Much of that came in the form of volunteering. That’s fine to a point. But there comes a time when you realize that a few hours here and a few hours there leave you with few hours to do the things you really want to do. In my case, that’s canoeing, camping and photography — all of which involve disappearing into the back country for hours or days on end.

Irv OslinIrv Oslin

Irv Oslin

You reach a point in your life when you realize that time is short. Sure, you might be around another 15 years or so. But, as you watch people your age become ill and grow frail, you come to realize that you might be exchanging your hiking boots for house slippers sooner than you thought. Or worse.

That scares me.

Gradually bowling out of volunteer gigs and speaking engagements

I’ve gradually bowed out of volunteer gigs and have taken on fewer speaking engagements lately. (I plan to remain active with the Mohican Scenic River Steering Committee and Friends of the Mohican River Watershed.) I’ve even stopped exhibiting photos for the time being.

I cringe when people suggest I should put more effort into “marketing my art.” I’m glad they appreciate my writing and photography. But presenting and promoting your work takes time and money. Neither of which I have in great abundance.

That probably wouldn’t…

Mohegan-backed Inspire Athens gets concession approval for Hellinikon casino project

T

he Hellinikon Casino Resort project was approved by the Greek government on Friday. The Inspire Athens consortium, comprising Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment and GEK Terna, was the winning bidder.

The billion-dollar integrated resort was officially approved by the Hellenic Gaming Commission, and now the company is required to pay $174.8 million to get the project started. The deadline for completion of the Hellinikon project construction has not yet been announced.

Inspire Athens is 100% owned by listed Greek construction group GEK Terna, while the necessary casino operating experience required by the terms of the competition is provided by Mohegan. GEK is required to maintain at least 35% of the share capital of Inspire Athens in-house for at least the next eight years.

In addition to winning the bid for the gaming licence, the Inspire Athens consortium also holds a €1 billion contract for the construction of an integrated complex casino around two main towers of 200 and 100 meters height, respectively.

The complex will include a luxury, 120,000-square meter hotel of 3,450 beds, a conference and exhibition center of 23,700 sq.m. and a sports and cultural center with a capacity for 10,500 people that could host anything from concerts to soccer games.

The Hellinikon Integrated Resort Project

The Greek IR project started with MGE and Hard Rock as the main contenders against Hard Rock. MGE won in 2019, but Hard Rock appealed the decision. In May 2021, the appeal was rejected and the company was definitely removed from the equation.

In 2019, pursuant to attracting investors willing to grow the country’s casino market, the Greek government updated its gambling laws, and lowered the licensing fees.

In March 2021, MGE Chair James…
