DELMARVA – TidalHealth is temporarily pausing visitation and overnight surgeries requiring an overnight stay.

Starting Monday, December 27th, patient visitation will be suspended at both TidalHealth Peninsula Regional and TidalHealth Nanticoke in Seaford. Also effective Monday, both hospitals will pause elective, non-emergency surgeries that require an overnight stay.

“A spike in COVID-19 cases, other seasonal illnesses and the many health needs of our communities, coupled with unprecedented workforce constraints have come together to create a perfect storm for healthcare providers,” said Dr. Sarah Arnett, DNP, MS, RN, NEA-BC, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at TidalHealth. “We are taking these steps for the safety of our patients and our healthcare team.”

Although visitation will be open until Monday, TidalHealth is asking individuals to not visit patients at either hospital if they are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or any illness.

A directive from the state of Maryland, a sharp increase in COVID-19 rates, high patient volumes, and demand for hospital beds has led to the decision to pause certain surgeries. While the state of Delaware has not issued a similar directive at this time, COVID-19 admissions and the strain caused by the census at TidalHealth Nanticoke made it necessary for the Seaford hospital to follow the same plan as Salisbury.

A clinical team is actively evaluating all non-emergency, non-life-threatening surgeries requiring an overnight stay, and those that can be postponed will be. Patients affected are being notified ahead of time by their surgeon’s office.

We’re told this pause will remain in place until Maryland’s COVID-19 hospitalizations fall below the 1,200 mark, per Governor Larry Hogan’s directive. The visitation policy will also be revisited, and exceptions to the current no-visitors…

The mayhem of the holiday season is here: bumper to bumper traffic, surges of COVID-19, last minute shopping, and — for Santa — the final touches before he makes his annual journey around the world.

With all of the old and new traditions compounding on each other, the holiday season can be a lot.

But there is one place where I find all of those stresses disappear, at least for a little while.

Hidden along Grover Street in Beverly, the 62-acre Alt Reservation hosts a few miles of trails to get wonderfully lost in or catch your breath after a marathon of cookie decorating.

While now surrounded by the epitome of suburbia, the reservation holds onto a history of the Algonquian-speaking people known as the Naumkeag.

According to Essex County Greenbelt, the ponds and swamps in the reservation were important to these people.

“To the Algonquians, cedar was and is one of the four sacred plants used in ceremonies and cures,” the Greenbelt wrote on its website, ecga.org. “The other sacred plants are sage, sweetgrass, and tobacco. The people gathered blueberries here and caught turtles in the pond. Turtle shells were used as bowls or fashioned into rattles used in curing ceremonies. Beaver Pond marks the headwaters of the Miles River, an Ipswich River tributary.”

This oasis has great trails that bring any explorer into a wooded expanse that is perfect for any lunch break, brisk walk, or a post present-opening respite.

UPDATE: The state of Maryland has surpassed the threshold of 1,500 COVID-19 hospitalizations Thursday, triggering additional actions by hospitals, as required by a Maryland Department of Health order.

TidalHealth announced that, beginning Dec. 27, the hospital system will temporarily suspend patient visitation and pause some elective surgeries at its Salisbury and Seaford locations as hospitalizations spike across the state.

Both TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury and TidalHealth Nanticoke in Seaford will experience a temporary pause at both hospitals of elective, non-emergency surgeries that require an overnight stay.

“A spike in COVID-19 cases, other seasonal illnesses and the many health needs of our communities, coupled with unprecedented workforce constraints have come together to create a perfect storm for health care providers,” said Dr. Sarah Arnett, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at TidalHealth. “We are taking these steps for the safety of our patients and our health care team.”

The move comes after Gov. Larry Hogan announced new COVID-19 protocols for hospitals in prepare for a further surge in COVID-19 amid rising hospitalizations last week.

While the state of Delaware had not issued a similar directive, COVID-19 admissions and the strain caused by the census at TidalHealth Nanticoke made it necessary for the Seaford hospital to follow the same surgical reduction plan as the Salisbury hospital.

On Wednesday, the Maryland database showed 1,465 hospitalizations for the state. A week earlier, there were 1,151. A month ago, there were 508 hospitalizations in the state.

King of Prussia, PA – The bridge carrying Swamp Creek Road over Unami Creek in Marlborough Township, Montgomery County, was closed today after undermining of the bridge pier was discovered during an underwater bridge inspection, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Work to repair the three-span stone masonry arch bridge is expected to begin in early January 2022. The roadway will remain closed for a few weeks until underpinning work is performed to prevent future scouring.

During the closure, Swamp Creek Road motorists will be directed to use Geryville Pike, Route 63 (Sumneytown Pike), Route 563 (Ridge Road), and Whites Mill Road.

Built in 1892, Swamp Creek Road Bridge was recently closed due to damaged caused by Tropical Storm Ida. Approximately 203 vehicles travel across the 89-foot-long, 20-foot-wide structure daily.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. The schedule is weather dependent.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
