Mohegan says construction of Inspire Korea back underway

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

US tribal casino operator Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment says it has recommenced construction of its South Korean integrated resort, Inspire Korea, after completing financing late last year.

As previously reported by Inside Asian Gaming, Mohegan confirmed the completion of financing in November with the full US$1.55 billion in aggregate funding comprising US$575 million in equity, a KRW1.04 trillion (US$890 million) finance loan from raised through a three-bank Korean consortium – KB Securities, NH Investment & Securities and Hana Financial Investment – and KRW100 billion (US$85.5 million) from the General Contractor, Hanwha Engineering & Construction Corp.

Subsequent to completion of the financing, Inside Asian Gaming interviewed Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment International President Bobby Soper in December 2021.

As part of its overnight results announcement for the three months to 31 December 2021, Mohegan said Hanwha Engineering & Construction Corp has “remobilized and recommenced construction work on site” including structural steelwork and below grade utility construction plus infrastructure related work such as utilities and roadways to the site. The procurement of major trades and long lead items is also in progress.

Mohegan had stated upon securing final financing in November that it is hoping to open Inspire Korea within the first half of 2023.

The development is slated to include three hotel towers, an arena, a foreigner-only casino, dining, retail, convention and entertainment options, a year-round indoor water dome experience, and an outdoor family park.

It will become the second integrated resort to open in Incheon after Paradise City – the latter being a joint venture partnership between Korea’s Paradise Co and Japanese gaming firm Sega Sammy Holdings.

The company said on a call with analysts overnight that the resumption of construction “demonstrates MGE’s dedication to growth and diversification.”

Berkshire Museum returns Sachem Konkapot’s wampum pouch and moccasins to Stockbridge-Munsee Community

PITTSFIELD — A pair of moccasins and a wampum pouch that have been in the Berkshire Museum’s collection for nearly 65 years are on their way home to the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians in Wisconsin.

Upon being presented with the moccasins and wampum pouch during an official “transfer of custody” at the museum on Thursday, Bonnie Hartley, historic preservation officer for the Stockbridge-Munsees, carefully tucked cedar and tobacco leaves amongst the items.

“It’s actually kind of similar traditionally to what Sachem Konkapot would have in his wampum bag. He would have had wampum in there or medicine. I just used my own medicine bag to place tobacco and cedar. Cedar is for protection, tobacco is our way of offering prayers. When I take them back to our office, I’ll light sage and smudge them,” Hartley said, referring to the Stockbridge-Munsee office on the Williams College campus.

Taking a blend of tobacco and cedar out of her own medicine bag and tucking it into the items, Tribal Historic Preservation Manager for the Stockbridge Munsee Community Bonney Hartley, begins the process of cleansing, protecting, and welcoming back home a set of moccasins and a wampum pouch from her ancestors.

The moccasins and wampum pouch are attributed to Pophnehonnuhwoh, a Muh-he-con-ne-ok sachem (chief), later known as Chief John Konkapot (a name taken after his Christian baptism in 1735). At some point, Konkapot gifted the items to Israel Dickinson, whose great-great-grandson, Allen Peck, of Pittsfield, donated them to the Berkshire Museum in 1958, said Jason Vivori, collections experience manager at the Berkshire Museum. The items are headed to the tribe’s own museum and library in Bowler, Wis., where their cultural items are preserved.

Permanent FanDuel Sportsbook to Open at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut on Thursday

After taking bets at the casino’s sports bar since the end of September, the permanent Mohegan Sun FanDuel Sportsbook in Connecticut will have a soft opening on Thursday — just in time for Sunday’s Super Bowl, a national sports betting holiday.

The first legal bet in Connecticut was placed on Sept. 29 at the Mohegan Sun’s Bow & Arrow Sports Bar by Gov. Ned Lamont. He bet $50 on the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA Playoffs at the temporary Mohegan Sun sportsbook. At the time it had four live betting windows and 50 self-service betting terminals.

The permanent sportsbook, which soft launches at 9 a.m. Thursday, will have multiple live teller windows and 39 betting kiosks, according to a news release. One of the kiosks will be on the all-new mezzanine level that has 22 luxury seats.

The new sportsbook, located in the old Race Book, will have 222 total seats and a 140-foot video wall in its 11,000 square feet, the release said.

“We’re beyond excited about this new venue which completely transforms Mohegan Sun’s old Race Book space into one of the largest and most dynamic FanDuel Sportsbooks in the United States,” Jeff Hamilton, president & general manager of Mohegan Sun, said in the release. “The all-new Mohegan Sun FanDuel Sportsbook, led by Sportsbook General Manager Brad Bryant, becomes the premier venue to wager on and catch a game while enjoying top-notch service inside an incredibly immersive atmosphere.

”We’re really thrilled to welcome sports fans out to this new venue, and we plan to have special appearances throughout the year.”

After the permanent sportsbook gets up and running this week, the casino and FanDuel will host a Grand Opening celebration on March 5, just in time for March Madness.

Running through Sunday, bettors who visit the Mohegan…

Greater Nanticoke Area increases substitute pay, replaces gym seats

Greater Nanticoke Area Superintendent Ron Grevera removed his mask for comments at Thursday’s monthly School Board meeting, offering praise for former Superintendent Tony Perrone, who died Feb. 3. Mark Guydish | Times Leader

Greater Nanticoke Area Superintendent Ron Grevera removed his mask for comments at Thursday’s monthly School Board meeting, offering praise for former Superintendent Tony Perrone, who died Feb. 3.

Mark Guydish | Times Leader

NANTICOKE — The Greater Nanticoke Area School Board increased substitute teacher pay to $125 a day at Thursday’s monthly meeting, with the rate bumping up to $145 per day for teachers in a position more than 20 days. The rate was $95 per day, but the district, like others in the area, is struggling to attract substitutes, and the increase is similar to those in other districts.

After the meeting, Superintendent Ron Grevera said the district currently only has about six reliable substitutes, and that it could probably use about 20.

The board also approved a plan to have Degler-Whiting Inc. replace the gymnasium seats at a discounted cost not to exceed $46,031. Grevera said the 20-year-old plastic seats had started cracking and become a safety risk. The district negotiated with the company, which had originally installed the seats, and got the price of replacement reduced from about $70,000.

And the board voted to seek bids for the artificial turf and track project at the stadium. The cost won’t be known until bids come in, but the project has been estimated at about $2 million. The district has obtained about $900,000 toward that through the state Local Share Account, money the state gives…

‘The best coach I ever had’, Sarasota youth football legend John Patella dies at 94

John Patella, who died at 94 on Tuesday, coached youth football for the Ringling Redskins for 41 years, winning 13 league titles

SARASOTA — John Patella was sure the play would work. His Ringling Redskin Mohican teams never threw the football much anyway, perhaps 1-2 passes a game, so his opponent for this contest, 4-0 Seneca, never would expect a pass from an undersized and unknown running back.

“He saw something in me that he thought was really special and took a chance on me,” said Brian Ryals, then a 12-year-old. The man known simply as “Coach” had drafted Ryals from Ringling’s Braves division. In the mid-1980s, a third division, for players ages 12-13, was formed for several years to fit in between the Braves and Warriors.

Patella, leaving the Mohicans to coach this new entry, named Mescalaro, selected Ryals in the draft. The featured runner on his former team, Ryals had to prove to Patella he was ready and deserving of a big chance.

The game against Seneca was it. “It was the showdown game,” said Ryals, the former head coach at Sarasota High and current quarterbacks coach at Venice High. Also 4-0, the Mohicans were tied with Seneca when Patella unveiled a play designed specifically for Ryals.

Taking the snap from center, the Mohican quarterback tossed the ball to Ryals, who faked a run before pulling up and throwing a pass to an open receiver. He ran it in for the touchdown which put the Mohicans in front for good.

They won the game, and finishing the season 10-0, also captured the league title, one of 13 during Patella’s 41 years as Mohican head coach. During a three-year span, his teams went 36-0.

Ryals doesn’t remember the quarterback who tossed him the ball, or the receiver who caught it. What he remembers is the coach who…

Stockbridge-Munsee Historic Preservation Manager oversees repatriation of ancestral artifacts from Berkshire Museum

In a classroom on the museum’s second floor, Bonney Hartley whispered a quiet prayer over a box containing an ornate pair of beaded, orange and green moccasins and a wampum bag while sprinkling tobacco and cedar over them from a ceremonial pouch.

“Cedar is for protection,” she explained.
“Tobacco is our way of offering prayers. When I take them back to our office, I’ll also light a sage and smudge them. But we just want to cleanse them off and welcome them back home and let them know that what’s happening to them, that they’re returning from here to go back to our community.”

20220211_120532.jpg The 17th century moccasins and wampum bag.

Hartley’s name in Munsee is Taheekwundoheet, which means “she has her arms around the People.” She’s the Tribal Historic Preservation Manager of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, working out of a Williamstown office. She focuses on preserving the community’s cultural landmarks, overseeing the return ancestral artifacts and remains from colonial institutions.

The community lived in a vast stretch of the Northeast for centuries before the arrival of European colonists in the 1600s, and were officially recognized as the Stockbridge-Munsee while centered in that Berkshire community in the 1700s.

“Our ancestors fought really valiantly in the Revolutionary War on the side of the new colonial America,” said Hartley. “And for those that did return to the town of Stockbridge, many people’s land had been taken by the Williams family, really notably, and others, and others obviously lost their lives in the war. And so our tribe was diminished, and actually not really seen as having a lot of value or use at that point for our strengths around diplomacy, for example, and working among other tribes during the Revolutionary War.”

After years of broken promises…
