PennDOT to Begin Rehabilitation on Swamp Creek Road Bridge over Unami Creek in Marlborough Township

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, February 14, to rehabilitate the Swamp Creek Road bridge over Unami Creek in Marlborough Township, Montgomery County.

PennDOT’s contractor will repair the structure’s foundation at the pier and near abutment to prevent future scouring. The three-span stone masonry arch bridge was closed in late December 2021 after undermining of the bridge pier was discovered during an underwater bridge inspection.

Since the closure, motorists have been directed to use Geryville Pike, Route 63 (Sumneytown Pike), Route 563 (Ridge Road), and Whites Mill Road. The closure will remain in place until late March.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. The schedule is weather dependent.

Before the recent December closure, the Swamp Creek Road bridge was initially closed in September 2021 to repair the approach roadway due to damaged caused by Tropical Storm Ida. Approximately 203 vehicles travel across the 130-year-old, 89-foot-long, 20-foot-wide structure daily.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

Norfolk hospital doctor raising funds for those left behind by suicide

Published: 2:51 PM February 9, 2022

Updated: 3:05 PM February 9, 2022

A doctor has relaunched a haircut challenge to raise money for those left behind by suicide.

Dr Ben Fox, an anaesthetist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn, shaved a ‘nohican’ stripe through his hair last February after a colleague took his own life.

The consultant anaesthetist hoped to highlight the need for more openness surrounding the topic of mental health and suicide, especially for men and people working in the medical profession who do not always find it easy to talk about the stresses they are under.

He also raised more than £2,500 for a mental health support charity.

“Sadly another friend died from suicide last year and that prompted the next phase if you like,” said Dr Fox, 40, who lives in Castle Acre, near Swaffham.

“I changed the hairstyle, if you like, to make it easier for other people to join in.”

Dr Fox said funds raised from this year’s challenge would be donated to the charity Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide.

“This year, we thought we would do it for the people left behind by suicide,” he added.

The charity provides a safe and confidential environment in which bereaved people can share their experiences and…

President of Stockbridge-Munsee Community Shannon Holsey delivers Claiming Williams morning keynote on history of the Mohican Nation

President of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians Shannon Holsey presented the morning keynote for Claiming Williams Day on Feb. 3. Holsey delivered a presentation on the history of the Stockbridge-Munsee community, a band of the people formerly known as the Muhheconeew, or Mohican Nation, and the tribe’s forced removal from the College campus and Berkshire County. After her address, which took place on Zoom, Holsey answered audience questions about her role as a community leader and how institutions such as the College can work to build relationships with Indigenous communities and reckon with their past injustices.

Jayden Jogwe ’24, who participated in an independent study during the fall semester titled “Mohican Nation in Williamstown: Past, Present, and Future,” moderated the event. “I just really want to emphasize just how monumental it is to have President Holsey here,” Jogwe said. “This very well might be the first visit, albeit virtually, by a tribal sovereign nation leader to the College after its founding.”

Holsey’s speech explored the 2022 Claiming Williams theme, “Breaking Cycles: Where Do We go From Here?” The day’s programming investigated how to move forward from harmful cycles at all levels — from destructive thought patterns to systemic injustice — that persist in the College community and beyond.

“It is my hope that today is one of many conversations…that we have as people, as the human race, because we are all interconnected in some form or fashion,” Holsey said. “I want to speak to you and engage you and invite you into the conversation… knowing that there really are no questions off the table.”

Holsey began her talk by sharing her personal history, followed by exploring the history of her tribe. After eight years as a member of the Tribal Council, the main governing body of the nation, Holsey…
