Woman calls out school’s “racist” routine during sports game in viral video

A viral video of a performance during a basketball game at an Indiana high school has viewers disgusted after two students dressed in traditional Native American clothing and danced.

Sarah Holba, who goes by the username @rradredgina, posted a video of the students culturally appropriating Native culture by having two students dress as the high school’s official mascot “the Indian” and “the Maiden.”

The video, titled “what in the #culturalappropriation” received more than 146,000 views and 3,800 comments since it was posted on February 22.

Cultural appropriation is the act of taking aspects of an oppressed or minority group’s culture without permission. WeRNative, a health resource for Native youth, provides resources to youth struggling to fight Native cultural appropriation.

WeRNative recommends individuals who see individuals appropriating Native culture start a conversation about why what they are doing is harmful and disrespectful, although the conversations can be uncomfortable.

“I literally hate Indiana,” the on-screen text read as Holba showed a student dressed in a reconstruction of a traditional Native American headdress running across the high school’s basketball court.

Holba told Newsweek the incident occurred at Anderson High School in Anderson, Indiana, on February 22. Although Holba has no association with the school, she was attending a basketball game for the school’s senior night when she started recording the school’s mascot.

In the video, a male and female student stood in the middle of the basketball court dressed as Native Americans including war paint, feathers, and a large feathered headdress.

At one point during warm-ups for the basketball game, the two individuals stood in the middle of a group of cheerleaders as the male student pretended to blow a horn.

“I have had several students at Anderson comment and reach out to me saying that this has gone on historically for years at the school,” Holba said. “When students…

Nanticoke Area boys basketball falls to Scranton Prep, misses final bid to states

SCRANTON — Nanticoke Area’s boys basketball season ultimately ended one win short of a state tournament appearance, but not before the Trojans took one last shot in an impressive second-half comeback attempt Wednesday night.

Scranton Prep shook off Nanticoke scoring the first 15 points of the second half to emerge with a 52-45, home-court victory in the game to determine District 2’s third and final Class 4A qualifiers in the PIAA tournament.

The Trojans trailed by 13 twice in the second quarter before jumping in front, 36-33, by taking advantage of Scranton Prep’s 0-for-14 start to the second half.

“At halftime, our two seniors, our two leaders, Chris Johnson and Owen Brown, said ‘we’re not going down without a fight, we’re going out on our terms’,” Nanticoke coach Zach Pientka said. “We did everything and more to get back in the game.

“We wanted to defensive rebound and get out in transition and we did that.”

Scranton Prep recovered, then put together a closing 11-3 run after Brown scored off an in-bounds play with 5:52 left for the last Nanticoke lead, 42-41.

Payton Kepp’s 3-pointer with 1:59 remaining made it, 46-45, but Scranton Prep shut down Nanticoke the rest of the way and six of 10 free throws to close out the win.

James Pettinato and Andrew Ferguson had 12 points each to lead the Cavaliers, who had their seven-year run as district champion ended by Mid Valley in Saturday’s semifinals.

Matt Cobb added 10 points.

Kepp had seven points in the third quarter and finished with 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the Trojans. Chris Johnson added 10 points.

Jaidyn Johnson had eight points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots. He had seven defensive rebounds in the third quarter when…

WNBA Considered Terminating New York Liberty Over Chartered Flights

*The New York Liberty were fined $500,000 for taking charter flights to away games during the second half of the WNBA season.

Team owners Joe and Clara Wu Tsai reportedly chartered the flights, which included an unsanctioned team trip to Napa, California. These flights are said to be a violation of WNBA’s bargaining agreement, per Howard Megdal of Sports Illustrated.

Joe previously spoke about the team’s travel on Twitter, saying a “constructive solution to this problem” needs to be explored.

Here’s more from Complex:

The Liberty’s $500K fine, Sports Illustrated shared, came after the league reportedly tried to fine the organization $1 million, which was then appealed. Liberty executive Oliver Weisberg is also allegedly being removed from the WNBA’s executive committee as a result. WNBA general counsel Jamin Dershowitz reportedly threatened the “termination of the franchise” and the loss of “every draft pick you have ever seen” in response to the flights that were chartered for every road game during the season’s second half.

As reported by Bleacher Report, the Liberty has pushed for chartered flights to become standard for team travel.

“I think what charter flights represent in the world of sports is it gives you…

Stelco fired up as Haldimand pursues Nanticoke development

Empire Communities now owns 17 land parcels that surround Stelco’s Lake Erie Works. Stelco representatives expressed frustration with Haldimand County as council pursues zoning changes on provincially designated industrial lands.

Two weeks after the announcement of a proposal for a massive residential development on lands next to Stelco’s Lake Erie Works, the company has told Haldimand council that it not only opposes the development, but that it could imperil the future of the existing plant.

“Based on the information we have before us here today, we can provide you no assurance that we will be here in 20 years,” said Trevor Harris, Stelco’s vice-president of corporate affairs. “There is nothing in that proposal that gives us any confidence that we could survive that type of development for a variety of reasons.”

Developer Empire Communities has purchased 17 parcels of land surrounding the steel mill, and has proposed building 15,000 homes. The site would also include a school, and create up to 11,000 jobs. However, in order to make the development happen, the province would need to change the existing land use designation.

“This puts us at risk, it puts the economy at risk,” said Harris at the March 1 council-in-committee meeting. “Conversations that we’ve had with the City Hamilton and will continue to have with the province will also now indicate that this puts our operations in Hamilton also in jeopardy.”

Harris stated that both operations were entwined, and the loss of business would have a “broad, sweeping impact for our company and all of southwestern Ontario.”

He, along with lawyer Paul Simon, expressed frustration at learning of the plan through the local media, and not from the county, calling it “unfair and inappropriate,” given the business’s employment history and…

U.S. Interior secretary pays visit to Mashantuckets, Mohegans

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland privately visited the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan reservations Wednesday, Haaland’s office and the tribes acknowledged later in the day.

Haaland toured the Mohegan Cultural Preservation Center, the Tantaquidgeon Museum and the Mohegan Church for about 90 minutes before traveling to Mashantucket, where she met for about an hour with tribal leaders in the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center.

It was Haaland’s first official visit to either reservation since being sworn in as secretary in March 2021, the first Native American Cabinet secretary in U.S. history. She previously visited the Mohegan reservation in October 2019 while representing New Mexico in the U.S. House of Representatives. She is a member of the Laguna Pueblo.

Lynn Malerba, the Mohegan chief, said Haaland was accompanied by several staff members.

“She’s so down to earth,” Malerba said. “She works so hard at understanding tribes and the people she represents. It’s so important for tribes to share their culture. Every tribe is different, and she’s interested in nuances.”

In a statement, James Gessner Jr., chairman of the Mohegan Tribal Council, called it “a historic day for the Mohegan Tribe.”

“She has been a fierce advocate for tribal communities,” he said of Haaland, “and we’re pleased that she visited the morning after President (Joe) Biden announced in his State of the Union that he was committed to investing in critical infrastructure in our communities. … Just as we value our historic partnerships with the State of Connecticut and local neighboring municipalities, our ongoing collaboration with the federal government and the Department of Interior is of the utmost importance to our tribal leadership and our members.”

Lori Potter, spokeswoman for the Mashantucket Tribe, said Haaland was welcomed by members of the tribal council, elders’ council and youth council.

“A longtime friend of…
