Times Leader Career Fair set for Tuesday at Mohegan Sun Arena

WILKES-BARRE TWP. — Kerry Miscavage, Times Leader Media Group publisher, said the Times Leader has always taken the lead for hosting job fairs for Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Miscavage said this week’s expo at the Mohegan Sun Arena concourse, is set for Tuesday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

As a media property, Miscavage said the Times Leader has promoted the expo through a variety of organic and paid media outlets within the market:

• Daily newspaper ads.

• Timesleader.com high impact ads.

• Entercom and Cumulus radio.

• PA Live! And WBRE commercials.

• Paid social media and programmatic advertising.

• Targeted email blasts to local job seekers and more.

“This will be one of the largest spring career expos we have had in many years,” Miscavage said. “The decrease in COVID cases has recruiters wanting to be face-to-face to local job seekers.”

And, Miscavage said the job seekers are also ready to visit as well.

“We can see that in our pre-registration numbers,” Miscavage said. “I’ve talked to many of the recruiters listed below and they are very excited to come to the expo and interact with other businesses and prospective job candidates. Some are ready to hire on-the-spot.”

Miscavage said to make sure you check out the Recruitment advertising section in today’s Times Leader.

“It will give you a great range of jobs that these local employers are hiring for,” Miscavage said.

Howard Hilton took a 3-1 lead in the first, but Mohican Lodge put up nine runs in the fourth, then withstood a Hilton rally to win 13-9. Corbin Wengerd and Tim Burrell led Mohican with four hits each, and JJ Eshelman and Rachel Goeppinger each had four hits for Hilton.

Howard Hilton 7, Maximum Nutrition 4

Both teams scored a run in the first inning and held the tie until the fifth inning, when Howard Hilton scored two runs to go up 3-1. The lead didn’t last long with Maximum Nutrition scoring three runs to go up 4-3, but Howard Hilton scored a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to secure the win. Howard Hilton was led by JJ Eshelman and Rachel Goeppinger, who had three hits apiece. Carl Busse had a double in the game. Maximum Nutrition was led by Shawn Maxwell, who had four hits, including a double. 

Buckeye Crane 10, Coffing Electric LLC 9

Coffing Electric started the game off with a 2-1 lead after the first inning and each team scored in the second to make it a 3-2 game. Coffing Electric Went up 6-2, but in the bottom of the fourth, Buckeye Crane scored four runs to tie the game 6-6, and went up 7-6 with a one run fifth. Coffing Electric scored three in the sixth inning to take the 9-7 lead, but Buckeye Crane battled back with a two-run sixth and a run in the seventh to win. Coffing Electric was led by Lee Caudill, who had the game’s only homer. Buckeye Crane was led by Owen Miller, who had three hits, including a triple.

UN envoy urges Iraqi politicians to ‘roll up sleeves’ and meet people’s aspirations

NEW YORK — The top United Nations official in Iraq made an urgent appeal on Tuesday for the prompt formation of a new Government that meets the aspirations of that country’s people.

“National elections took place well over seven months ago and multiple deadlines for the formation of a government have been missed,” Special Representative Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert told the Security Council.

She pointed out that while political leaders subscribe to the notion of dialogue, the necessary willingness to compromise is painfully absent.

Noting that notorious aspects of Iraq’s political life are repeating themselves in “a seemingly incessant loop of zero-sum politics”, Ms. Hennis-Plasschaert – who also heads the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) – said that Iraqis continue to wait for “a political class that will roll up its sleeves to make headway on the country’s long list of outstanding domestic priorities”.

These include adequate service delivery to all citizens and an end to pervasive corruption, factionalism and pillaging of State institutions.

The UNAMI chief also emphasized the importance of diversifying the economy and implementing desperately needed reforms.

Moreover, she said that predictable governance rather than constant crisis management is needed, stressing that accountability must be a key feature of the State.

While asserting the State’s authority, Hennis-Plasschaert flagged that it is vital to rein in non-state armed actors.

“The neglect of the population’s most basic needs has gone on for far too long,” she underscored.

Turning to the Sinjar agreement, signed in October 2020 by the federal government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan regional government in Erbil, she described it as being seen by many as a “glimmer of hope: a very first but important step in the right direction”.

While the agreement could lead to a new chapter for Sinjar, it first needs stable governance and security structures, she pointed out.

Softball: Bell’s extra-inning walk off propels No. 19 Lenape

Nikki Williams and Maya Knasiak combined for a two-hit shutout while Taylor Bell drove in the game’s only run in extra innings as Lenape, No. 19 in the NJ.com Top 20, earned a 1-0, eight-inning victory over host Shawnee Wednesday afternoon.

Williams and Knasiak combined to allow just two hits and one walk while striking out 14 batters. Knasiak earned the win despite Williams pitching six innings and striking out nine batters.

Lenape (17-2) tallied eight hits throughout the game but didn’t get on the scoreboard until the top of the eighth inning thanks to Bell’s RBI single that proved to be the lone run of the day for either team.

Bell also tallied a double on the day while Vanessa Meyers went 3-for-4 with a trio of singles. Leah Taylor added a double as well.

Nella Sciarra and Lauren Petitt each recorded a single for Shawnee (11-9) as Alexandra Pley and Sophia Waterman both found success in the circle. Waterman was tagged with the loss despite allowing six hits and an unearned run while Pley struck out three batters in three innings of work.

“Brooke’s Toy Closet” expanding to Seaford hospital to continue giving comfort to children

SEAFORD, Del.- Tuesday morning TidalHealth Nanticoke honored a little girl who passed away from cancer.

The hospital received a toy closet for kids, which is an expansion of the “Brooke’s Toy Closet” initiative that started in 2014 at the TidalHealth Peninsula Regional, in Salisbury.

Brooke Mulford was an 8- year-old girl who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer, in 2009 when she was only 4-years-old, she endured numerous rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, several surgeries, two stem cell transplants, multiple bone marrow biopsies and blood transfusions. She was treated at several hospitals, including at TidalHealth.

Brooke ended up losing her battle to cancer in June of 2017.

During her fight with cancer, Brooke wanted to provide toys to other hospitalized children because she knew how it felt to receive toys herself during her hospital stays.

So, now with the toy closet expanding we’re told it’s going to support even more kids.

“When you’re able to give them something that will distract them something to put a smile on their face or can make a huge difference for them and it makes them think that the next time they come maybe it won’t be so scary,” Penny Short, President of TidalHealth Nanticoke, said.

TidalHealth workers and those who helped Brooke’s Toy Closet come to life gathered for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the expansion. Amy Mulford, Brooke’s mother, was also there.

Amy said this is the third toy closet that’s opened and all are in different states. She said Brooke would be thrilled to see another toy closet come to life and for Amy she said it means a lot as it gives her a reason to keep going.

PENGUINS TAKE BACK PLAYOFF SPOT BY ROUTING ISLES, 9-2

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins delighted a packed house at Mohegan Sun Arena with a dominant, 9-2 victory over the Bridgeport Islanders on Saturday night.

With playoff position hanging in the balance, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (30-27-4-4) unloaded a franchise record-tying nine goals. Seven different Penguins accounted for those nine goals, and 15 different players recorded at least one point in the rout of their division rival.

Bridgeport managed to score the game’s first two goals, with Austin Czarnik and Chris Terry burying both of the Islanders’ tallies.

After that, it was all Penguins…

Alex Nylander started the frenzy at 13:48 of the first period. The Penguins then flipped their 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead by generating three goals in 1:30 of game time during the second period. Sam Poulin tied things up at 5:43 of the middle frame, followed by a strike from Jamie Devane 20 seconds later. Less than a minute after that, Félix Robert put the Pens up by two.

After that three-goal outburst, Bridgeport called its timeout. The break did little to stop the unrelenting pressure of the home team, who continued to run up the score.

Kyle Olson got in on the fun after he forced a neutral-zone turnover and finished with a backhand shot past Islanders goalie Jakub Škarek. Olson’s goal came with 4:05 left in the second stanza, and then Michael Chaput tacked on another with 2:10 remaining.

The Islanders switched goalies at the start of the third period, but it still resulted in more Penguins goals. Drew O’Connor beat backup Ken Appleby through the five-hole 28 seconds into the final frame.

Poulin notched his second of the night at 7:26 of the third period, and then O’Connor rounded out the nine-goal outing…
