WILKES-BARRE TWP. — A negotiated payment on court-ordered attorneys’ fees is expected to end the civil case filed six years ago over protests outside the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

At its regularly scheduled public meeting Wednesday, the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority, which owns the arena, agreed to pay $65,000 in attorneys’ fees for animal rights activist Silvie Pomicter and Last Chance for Animals. Pomicter and Last Chance for Animals filed suit in 2016 against the Authority and SMG, the arena management company at the time, over restrictions placed on protesters at the former Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus shows.

Donna Cupinski, chairwoman of the Authority’s 11-member appointed board, Thursday said the attorneys are working on the agreement and no payment has yet been made.

The initial amount requested was approximately $250,000, Cupinski said. It dropped to $168,000, an amount the board thought was “totally ridiculous,” with the payment not going for attorneys’ fees, but instead to the Last Chance for Animals organization, she said.

“We went back and forth to negotiate a fee,” Cupinski said. “They accepted our last offer. We’re…

Changing Ways in the Delaware River Valley ~ Hakesena Sipu Pahseyunk

Written by RuthAnn Purchase

One huge change that has come to our region recently is the increasing desire to honor ancient ways of living together well. Land acknowledgements are one of many ways to do this and improve our relationships with all living things, including plants, animals, and people, a group that some, like the Lenape, call “All Our Relations.

Indigenous protocol on every continent requires the acknowledgement of one another’s ancestors, their ancestral rivers, and their sacred lands.

This protocol sounds a lot like equity or equal rights. We need trees to breathe; we relate to trees even if we forget to thank them; therefore, trees are our relations and deserve our respect.  If trees are our relations, do local Indigenous trees have the right to live?  Do local rivers have the right to thrive?  If humans need trees and clean water for Life on Earth, humans must re-learn honor for “All Our Relations.”

Naming is part of that honor.  If I call you by a name that insults you, you might not want to live with me.  So it is for our relations.  The term “Delaware” comes from De La Warre, a military title given to General Thomas West from the British Army, who decimated the lands and peoples he was sent to colonize.

Before Thomas West named them after himself, the Tribes were not called “Delaware Indians”.   They were Lenape, grouped in three Tribes: Wolf, Turkey and Turtle, each with their own dialect.

In the Philadelphia region, Unami was the prevalent dialect.  In Unami dialect of Lenape, this river valley we live in is called Hakesena Sipu Pahseyunk – the Mother River Valley. And Wawa was not a store on a highway, but the name of the geese who sang many songs as they migrated together.

Overnight storms leave power outages, downed limbs

Damage still being assessed after winds of up to 70 mph hit region

Power outages, fallen limbs and debris of all sorts awaited residents of North Central Ohio on Tuesday morning after two severe storms swept the region overnight.

It was a concerning blow ahead of temperatures that were forecast into the high 90s with a heat index expected to reach as much as 104.

Whether or not a derecho or a tornado had accompanied the thunderstorm was still not determined by late Tuesday morning, according to Brian Mitchell, a meteorologist with the Cleveland office of the National Weather Service.

“We’re still looking at the reports,” he said. “We still haven’t made a full determination on things yet.”

Power still out to many Richland County residents

What was clear, though, was that the the southern portion of Richland County was hit harder than anywhere else in the region, according to Joe Petrycki, director of the Richland County Emergency Management Agency.

As of 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, as many as 45% of the county’s residents were still without electricity.

“Parts of our county have sustained multiple downed lines, downed trees,” Petrycki said. “We have quite a few blocked roads spread throughout the county.”

Electrical service providers were pulling in crews from out of state in an attempt to restore power before the high temperatures entered the region Tuesday afternoon.

Severe weather: So, your power goes out. What happens to the food in your refrigerator and freezer?

The EMA director said hospitals and nursing homes were “holding steady” as they cared for their patients — all had electrical service as of late Tuesday morning.

“They seem to be doing well,” Petrycki said.

No major injuries had been reported as of late Tuesday morning, the EMA director said, although the storm had sent a few people to the hospital.

Nanticoke receives $1.1 million

A long-time eyesore in Luzerne County can now be torn down, thanks to new state funding. Officials say it’s a step in the right direction.

NANTICOKE, Pa. — From Skycam 16, you can see the remnants of a silk factory turned warehouse turned bowling alley along East Washington Street in Nanticoke. It’s been empty for over a decade, and police say it’s a public-safety issue.

“We have major problems here with people squatting and coming in and out of the building. The building right now is about ready to collapse in certain areas, so it is very unsafe to be in or near,” said Nanticoke Police Chief Michael Roke.

“If somebody gets hurt inside their building, it just makes our job a lot harder because the building itself is very unstable,” said Nanticoke Fire Chief Mark Boncal.

Funding is on the way from the state through a community safety project to take the building down.

“This grant was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority on Friday. The city was awarded $1.1 million, give or take around that number. And this is the biggest piece of that puzzle,” said Cody Forgach, a staff member for State Rep. Gerald Mullery.

It’s exciting news for people who call Nanticoke home.

“They’re thrilled. I mean, it’s been sitting like this for so long,” said Mayor Kevin Coughlin

The mayor hopes this will be a future site for residential development.

“Down the road, that Nacero gas plant coming up in Newport. I’m sure we’re going to need housing for that too. “

City officials hope the demolition will take place in the fall and cost close to $500,000.

The remainder of the grant will be used to provide the police department with two new cruisers and a fire department with a new engine, all of…

Supported by USAID and UNDP, Sinjar Court House reopens

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) announced on Tuesday that Sinjar Court House has been reopened with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

A press statement issued by UNDP’s spokesperson, Mrinalini Santhanam, explained that the Court House, which provides important legal services, was left severely damaged during ISIS occupation, but with generous funding from USAID, UNDP rehabilitated this important facility that serves over 25 thousand people across Sinjar District.

“The project was implemented through UNDP’s flagship programme, the Funding Facility for Stabilization (FFS). Since 2015, USAID has contributed around 400 million USD to FFS, including over 10 million USD in Sinjar, making it the FFS programme’s leading partner,” according to UNDP press statement.

“To date, USAID has supported around 900 FFS rehabilitation projects, including critical water and electrical infrastructure, as well as schools, housing, and health facilities,” the UNDP statement mentioned.

“The reopening of this facility is an important milestone in the journey to rebuild Sinjar and for the rule of law to prevail in the area,” UNDP Resident Representative in Iraq, Zena Ali Ahmad, mentioned in the press statement.

“Rehabilitating critical infrastructure and restoring essential services such as the Sinjar Court House is key to creating a safe and dignified environment for families choosing to return to Sinjar. Especially, through USAID’s support, UNDP has been able to prioritize support to the Yazidi survivors of genocide as they return and rebuild their lives after years of conflict and trauma,” Ahmad added.

“Restoring access to the judicial system is a critical component of the recovery process. The reopening of the Sinjar Court House is therefore a beacon of hope for the entire Yazidi community. USAID is proud of our work to rehabilitate this essential…

A dinosaur with native beadwork emerges in Philly’s Navy Yard

The sculpture acts as a sort of land acknowledgement wrought in steel: the Parasaurolophus is in the Hadrosaurus family of dinosaurs, which once roamed this region. The beadwork represents the people who traditionally occupied the land.

“I believe that time is not linear,” said artist Marianela Fuentes. “These beings were living in the same lands that we are now. So all the beadwork represents this time, and the dinosaur represents ancient times.” Artist Marianela Fuentes grew up in the state of Coahuila in northeast Mexico, an area rich in dinosaur fossils. (Emma Lee/WHYY)

The beadwork, resembling very floral tattoos, represent symbols and creation myths of the Lenni Lenape people, who worked with Fuentes to create the patterns by hand.

Fuentes is based in Mexico City and grew up in the state of Coahuila in northeast Mexico, where Parasaurolophus were plentiful. In prehistoric geological eras that region was part of an ocean. Now, as a risen seabed, it is one of the richest places in the world for dinosaur fossils. The sculpture, created by Mexican artist Marianela Fuentes, is covered in tiny beads depicting Native American themes. The designs on the head represent the universe. (Emma Lee/WHYY)

Prehistoric beasts have fascinated Fuentes since childhood, when her parents would take her to fossil sites. They have become a recurring influence in her sculptural work.

The bones of “Alpha Sacred Beings” are made from real archaeological casts at the Museum del Desierto, which has the largest collection of dinosaur bones in Mexico.

“I wanted to be an archeologist,” said Fuentes. “But I ended up doing sculpture.”

Every summer for the last…

Kourtney transforms her son into a music star. Kourtney Kardashian recently revealed a series of photos of her youngest kid Reign and his new stunning hairstyle on Instagram. She exposed his tall mohawk, which emphasized the lack of hair on each side of the child’s ears, save for the gelled hair in the middle. The “Barker Effect” was coined by several in the comments section to describe the rockstar makeover.

The family thought it best for the kids, who are still very young, to find out after the fact. As momager Kris pointed out that bringing the kids to the location in Santa Barbara without telling Scott would have been hard for anyone. Though the presence of Travis’ kids made the situation a tad bit awkward as they were involved in the process, which was again justified by Kris as she United that they were all grownups. As expected, Kourtney’s kids reacted horribly to the news that their mom delivered through a video call. The situation got serious when her daughter Penelope outright cried on hearing the good news and proceeded to hang up the phone while Reign simply declared the news was not interesting to him.

For those unversed, the Poosh founder got engaged on October 17, 2021, to beau Travis Barker and the couple later in May hosted their official wedding in Italy as they celebrated their union in lavish ways with close family and friends. Kourtney’s kids were with her on the day and supported their mother through her big day. Though at the time of her engagement, things did turn ugly. In an episode of The Kardashians, it was revealed how Kourtney’s three children, which she shares with ex-partner Scott Disick, were not invited to the intimate family dinner after the proposal.

However, the kids have certainly come around. A…
