Luzerne County DA discusses large fight at First Hospital

That took place on Saturday in Kingston.

KINGSTON, Pa. — In a news conference on Monday, Luzerne County District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce explained that an incident at First Hospital in Kingston started as a fight between two patients around 7:15 p.m. Saturday.

“At eight o’clock, it was reported to be a full-on large-scale incident involving approximately 14 juveniles who were inside that facility. The staff at that point had called in to indicate that they had barricaded themselves at a nursing station,” explained Sanguedolce.

The DA says five people were treated for injuries and released, including the two teenage boys believed to have started the incident, a teenage girl not involved in the fight, and two staff members.

“We are mindful that the subjects of this investigation are in First Valley Hospital for the purposes of obtaining mental treatment. So that is factoring into a large part of our investigation,” added Sanguedolce.

Officials in Luzerne County say the incident prompted a response from police and first responders across the Wyoming Valley, who encountered some issues accessing the building.

“First Valley Hospital is a secure facility. Due to the nature of the work that they perform there,” added Sanguedolce. “The police had great difficulty gaining access to certain areas of the hospital. That is something Chief Kotchik, and I intend to address with the administration to protect the safety of the staff there and also to protect anyone entering for purposes of emergency services.”

The DA says he also wants to address the lack of security he believes was on hand at the facility.

“In my opinion, there was not enough security there. And I don’t know if that’s a function of the regular staffing or the shortage that we’re seeing and personnel pretty much across the country. So, we’re at…

Sun return home and beat Fever for fourth straight win

Jun. 9—MOHEGAN — Much has been said (and written) about the Connecticut Sun’s recent flurry of games by both the team and outsiders.

The Sun had played nine games in 17 days. They concluded that stretch with four games in six days on the West Coast, including back-to-back games in Las Vegas and Phoenix.

Connecticut returned home to Mohegan Sun Arena on Wednesday night still a bit weary to play against the fast-paced Indiana Fever, not an ideal matchup for a team that could benefit from a slower game.

And now comes the “but”…

“We said it going into the game — nobody cares,” Sun Jonquel Jones said after an 88-69 win before 4,088 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

“Nobody cares if you didn’t sleep. Nobody cares if you have a back-to-back. … People see wins and they see losses. They don’t see all the circumstances that were behind it. So that was the main thing that we had going into that game, that no matter what (Indiana) did, there was never a feeling that we couldn’t punch them back, that we couldn’t get back into the game.”

It was the fourth straight win for the Sun (10-3). It was their 10th game in 20 days.

“It’s a unique challenge coming off the stretch that we’ve come off of,” Connecticut head coach Curt Miller said. “The challenge of your first game back is (it’s) always interesting to see what you have in the tank, and we were certainly still fatigued and tired going into this game.

“Really pleased that we came away with an important home victory tonight. Even with some fatigue and tired legs, we found a way to keep that team that plays either one or two in pace in the league and can really fly up-and-down the floor to under 20 (points) each quarter. That’s big.”

Lenape Valley softball coach says this year’s wins are ‘just the beginning’ for the Lady Patriots

Julianne Brennan, the head coach for the Lenape Valley High School softball program, both rightfully and with great pride remembers some of the Patriots’ finest moments from this recently concluded season.

“Looking back on our 2022 season, we had a few key wins that made us optimistic for the years to come and truly showed our growth as a team,’’ Brennan said. “First, we played Pope John in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament and lost 5-1; we played them again two weeks later and beat them 2-0 by having a clean game in the field and a few monster hits.

“We played Jefferson in our second-to-last game of the season and our bats came out hot in the first inning to take the lead, 4-0. This was the game where these girls came together, everyone played their game, the energy in the dugout was unmatched and we won as a team. Everyone had an important role in this huge win for us as a program and those are the games you remember. Our last win stands out as a true turning point for us when we beat High Point, 12-2, with a walk-off three-run homerun to end the season. It allowed us as a program to thrive in our last moments of the 2022 season and set the tone for next year.’’

Proper leadership was ever present for Lenape Valley this spring.

“Graduating seven seniors last year, there was plenty of opportunity for our athletes to step up and become leaders for the 2022 season,’’ Brennan said. “Junior shortstop Laney Kenny and junior third baseman Alyssa Canfield stepped up as true leaders of the team by, not only their energy, but also the way that they carry themselves.

“When we asked them to help us change the culture of the team, they…

Ohio State Parks announce 2022 photo contest winners

Chillicothe Gazette  |  USA TODAY NETWORK

COLUMBUS—The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) recently announced the winners of its 2022 Ohio State Parks Photo Contest this week.

All winning entries, except the People’s Choice award, were chosen over three rounds of judging by a panel of ODNR employees. The People’s Choice Award was voted on by the public.

ODNR’s photo contest offered five categories for images taken in an Ohio state park after Jan. 1, 2022. These categories are wildlife in action, recreation in the parks, wondrous water, novice naturalist and explore trails. Participants were able to submit up to five entries per category.

“We love to see the parks from visitors’ perspectives,” said Chief Glen Cobb, ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft. “These photographs celebrate Ohio’s outdoors and the memories created when family and friends gather in our state parks.”

First place went to Ashley Hendershot of Ashland who submitted her photo titled “Mohican Sunshine.” Her image depicts a biker on the 25-mile mountain bike loop at Mohican State Park with their hands up in the air while the sun bursts through the surrounding trees.

“This picture captures the hidden beauty at Mohican if you are just willing to seek the adventure,” said Hendershot. “This scenery can only be seen if you follow the mountain bike trail and get out and ride!”

Second place went to Michael Cordell of Johnstown who submitted his photo titled “Kayaking.” It depicts a kayaker in the bay at East Harbor State Park and is taken at the level of the water to include the lily pads.

Third place went to Kimberly Jackson of Athens who submitted her photo titled “Home Away from Home,” which shows a…
