About 400 years ago, the first Europeans began exploring land now known as Delaware.

As they journeyed through the region, their travels brought them face-to-face with the people who had lived there for millennia – the Lenni Lenape, the father tribe of the Lenape and Nanticoke Indians.

This month, the Delaware Art Museum’s recently debuted exhibit, “In Conversation: Will Wilson,” works to forge a new relationship with Indigenous people by bringing visitors face-to-face with them through stories of Native people, 19th-century photography, and augmented reality (AR) technology for an immersive experience that connects the past with the present.

In about a year and a half from idea to execution, the exhibition came together in whirlwind timing for show planning. Not only did the museum need to secure the artist’s availability, but they also needed to develop a relationship with Delaware’s Native population − some of the very people the artist would feature in his photos.

Uncasville, CT – CES Boxing returns to Mohegan Sun Arena for the first time in nearly seven years Saturday, August 20 with Summer Heat, the latest installment of its 2022 Fight Series featuring two of the sport’s hardest-hitting heavyweight prospects.

CES’ newest acquisition, 6-foot-6 right-hander Cassius Chaney of New London, CT, and 6-4 Carini, Sicily, native Juiseppe Cusumano headline Summer Heat in separate bouts. The two CES stablemates have combined for 41 wins and 32 knockouts in nearly two decades as pros and find themselves firmly entrenched among the nation’s top 20 heavyweights with an opportunity to inch closer to the dream of competing for a world title.

YORKTOWN, NY — A Mohegan Lake man was accused of driving an unregistered car with no license.

The Yorktown Police Department said Scott G. Echeverria, 33, was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, a misdemeanor, and operating an unregistered motor vehicle, a traffic infraction.

Around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, an officer made a traffic stop for a violation of the state Vehicle and Traffic Law.

Echeverria was identified by his license which was found to be revoked, police said.

The office also determined that the vehicle he was driving did not have a valid registration.

Echeverria was arrested and taken to the Yorktown Police Department where he was processed and released on his own recognizance.

He is due back in Yorktown Justice Court July 28.

SALISBURY, Md.- Dr. Noah Bressman, Salisbury University assistant professor of biological studies, and graduate assistant Zachary Crum are combating invasive species in local waterways, and Eastern Shore anglers can help.

Fishing hobbyists and professionals alike are invited to the Nanticoke River Invasive Fishing Tournament, presented by SU on Saturday, July 30 (rain date: Sunday, July 31) at Cherry Beach Park in Sharptown, Md. Lines in at 6 a.m. and weigh-in at 2 p.m., followed by awards and data collection.

Thanks to a grant from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the free tournament features approximately $2,000 in prizes. All blue catfish and northern snakeheads caught will be provided to Bressman’s lab to continue research to learn more about their effects on the local ecosystem, with a focus on diet, growth speed, and reproduction rates.

“We really want to spread awareness in local waterway communities about what fish are invasive, and how they can minimize the population to relieve some pressure from striped bass and blue crabs, whose populations are on the decline,” said Bressman.

Tournament fishing is permitted at Cherry Beach Park for shore-based anglers. Those fishing from kayaks or boats may use any boat launch along the Nanticoke and tributaries such as Marshyhope Creek and Barren Creek. Maryland or Delaware tidal fishing licenses are required for all participants, respective to their fishing location.

The event is hook and line only and does not include a bow fishing category. Limited fishing gear will be available for those who may not have their own supplies.

Though invasive species like blue catfish and snakeheads have developed a stigma due to the harm they can cause for native species, that does not mean they are unfit for consumption, Bressman said.

Both the national park and surrounding preserve — with a planned Lenape cultural center — would utilize federal lands that make up the national recreation area now.

“We would divide it up with 10% or 15% of the land becoming the national park, which would run like an emerald ribbon of green along the Delaware River and other attractions in the watershed, including some of the waterfalls and things like that,” Donahue explained.

While several Lenape tribes and nations told PA Local they have no objection to the proposal in theory, none knew enough about it to be certain.

“This is the first I’m hearing of it,” said Chief Brad KillsCrow of The Delaware Tribe of Indians in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, one of three federally recognized Lenape tribes in the U.S. that were forcibly removed from homelands in and around the Delaware River and water gap and driven west.

“If somebody’s going to talk about our tribes, our ancestors, and our history, it’d be nice to be involved in that.”

Representatives of another tribe — the Delaware Nation in Anadarko, Oklahoma — told PA Local that while their Historic Preservation Office has a vague recollection of being approached about the project some time ago, they’ve heard nothing since.

Adam Waterbear DePaul, a tribal council member with the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, which is not federally recognized, said they haven’t heard from organizers either.

“It came to our attention through backchannels,” he said. “We have not been involved at all.”

A release from the Sierra Club’s New Jersey chapter trumpeting the project — formally dubbed the Delaware River National Park and Lenape Preserve by organizers — touts the “informal endorsement from many tribal leaders” and upcoming “formal endorsement” from several tribal nations.

Donahue was less definitive, saying, “I didn’t put that out.”
