Xbox Series S/X Getting Reduced Bootup Animation, Cold Startup Times

Microsoft is reportedly rolling out a test build for Xbox Dashboard that is claimed to reduce the cold boot startup times by up to 5 seconds. The Redmond company has seemingly achieved this feat by shortening the bootup animation to about 4 seconds. A report mentions that this change will purportedly only be noticeable if the console has been set to the Energy Saver mode. Earlier this year, Microsoft reportedly made the Energy Saver mode the default option for Xbox consoles.

Director Integrated Marketing for Xbox Josh Munsee confirmed the update after a keen-eyed Xbox tester noticed the changes. Munsee claims that the bootup animation was reduced to around 4 seconds from the original 9 seconds to improve the overall boot times.

A report by The Verge mentions that Xbox Series S/X owners will supposedly only be able to benefit from this update if they set their consoles to Energy Saver mode. Unlike the Standby mode, the Energy Saver mode completely powers down the console. This mode is said to be energy efficient, albeit at the cost of boot times.

The new Xbox Dashboard update from Microsoft is said to cut the cold boot times to around 15 seconds from around 20 seconds. This improvement is expected to improve the appeal of the Energy Saving mode to gamers. The company has made the Energy Saver mode the default option for Xbox consoles. It also added support for background update downloads with this mode.

Microsoft has not year revealed when this new feature might enjoy a wider release.

In related news, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles in India have seen around a 6 percent jump in its price. They are reportedly…

Ceremony marks peace treaty between Ulster, Lenape Nation

KINGSTON, N.Y. — A ceremonial peace tree planting and historic peace treaty renewal between Ulster County and the Ramapough Lenape Nation will be held Friday, Aug. 5, at the Hudson River Maritime Museum, 50 Rondout Landing.

The day, billed as a “day of peace, healing, and good relations” will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a fire ceremony to be followed at 10 a.m. with the planting of a Tree of Peace at the former Kingston Visitors Center, 20 Broadway. During that ceremony, an Esopus apple tree will be planted in commemoration of the deaths of two indigenous women who ate apples from a local tree and were shot by a Dutch settler who thought they were stealing from him.

Kawisente, Chief of the Bear Clan of Kahnawake, Kanienkehaka, will lead the tree planting ceremony.

According to the release, the Tree of Peace is a metaphor for how peace can grow if it is nurtured. “Like a tall tree, peace can provide protection and comfort. Like a pine tree, peace spreads its protective branches to create a place of peace where we can gather and renew ourselves.” the announcement said. “Like the White Pine, peace also creates large white roots … that rise out of the ground so people can trace their journey to the source.”

A potluck lunch will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (participants should bring a labeled dish), followed at 1 p.m. by the renewal of the Oct. 7, 1665, peace treaty between the indigenous Esopus people and European settlers.

The 1665 Richard Nicolls Esopus Peace Treaty, which is part of the Ulster County Clerk’s Archival Collection, is significant because it brought to a close hostility between the Esopus people and the settlers that began in 1659.

As part of the treaty, both parties promised…

The Somerville Times Historical Fact of the Week – August 3

Eagle Feathers #259 – Busby

By Bob (Monty) Doherty

William Berkeley Enos was born in Los Angeles on November 29, 1895, to thespian parents. His father was an actor, and his mother was an actress and choreographer. Upon his father’s death, he was placed in boarding schools, the longest being a five-year run at the Mohegan Lake Military Academy in Peekskill, New York. After graduation, he worked at a shoe company for three years in Athol, Massachusetts.

In 1917 with America in World War I, his call to serve was instilled by his Mohegan Lake training, and he enlisted in the Army at Fort Banks in Winthrop, Massachusetts, before going to France. As a young Lieutenant, he was attached to the 312th Field Artillery Battalion, composed of six batteries and 1,200 men. He supervised close order allied drills and formations for French and American soldiers.

He was a natural at this and masterfully exercised troops in circles, columns, grids, and parades with once commanding a trick drill with 1,200 soldiers in silent maneuvers. Volunteering as an Army Air Corps spotter, he observed and reported panoramic troop movements and fighting patterns from high elevations. The knowledge he gained from this would serve him well in his after-military life.

Vaudeville in America was an early 20th century entertainment where popular specialty acts, such as comedy, slapstick, pantomime, and song and dance acts were featured. In 1915, vaudeville shows at the Somerville Theatre were the stock trade of the burgeoning Somerville Players and other song and dance troopers.

One of the players who danced across her floor was Ray Bolger who was remembered for his roles in Babes in Toyland, April in Paris, The Great Ziegfeld and most of all as the…

UN mission, Arab League call for end to escalation amid political protests in Iraq

Baghdad, July 31 The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and Arab League have called for an end to the escalation in the country during protests against the nomination of Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani for the post of Prime Minister.

“The ongoing escalation is extremely concerning. Voices of reason and wisdom are critical to prevent further violence,” the UNAMI said on Twitter on Saturday, encouraging all sides to “de-escalate in the interest of all Iraqis”.

Meanwhile, the Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit on Saturday also appealed to all Iraqi political forces to work quickly to stop the escalation and start a real and sincere dialogue, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The Secretary-General stresses that getting things out of control will not be in the interest of Iraq or in the interest of any party,” the Arab League said on Facebook.

On Wednesday, hundreds of followers of Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr broke into the parliament building after the Coordination Framework, an umbrella group of Shia parliamentary parties, nominated al-Sudani on Monday for the post of Prime Minister.

Earlier in the day, al-Sadr’s followers entered the Iraqi parliament building again and started a protest in the building.

The Coordination Framework became the largest alliance in the Iraqi parliament after al-Sadr ordered his followers in the Sadrist Movement, the biggest winner in the elections held on October 10, 2021, with 73 seats, to withdraw from the parliament.

During the past months, the continued dispute among the Shia parties have hampered the formation of a new Iraqi government, as the parliament has been unable to elect a new President by a two-thirds majority of the 329-seat parliament under the constitution.

Film Review: The Mohican Comes Home (2016) by Shuichi Okita

Another Okita’s tale of a small community populated by gently eccentric characters

Shuichi Okita, with a very personal style, delicate but assertive at the same time, has been able to make himself known and appreciated in the circuits of festivals and in less mainstream circles with films that are difficult to label, often defined as “dramedy” that is a mixture of drama and comedy. Like in “The Woodsman and The Rain”, “The Chef of South Polar” and “Mori: The Artist’s Habitat”, the backdrop of “The Mohican Comes Home” is also a small community on an imaginary island in the Soto Inland Sea, off the coast of Hiroshima, where Okita places one of his typical characters, always dazed and looking out of place.

This time it is Eichiki (Ryuhei Matsuda), the titular “Mohican” (because of his haircut), who 7 years earlier had left his hometown for Tokyo, in search of work and fame in a death metal band. Eichiki hasn’t had much luck in Tokyo and, to make things more complicated, his girlfriend Yuka (Atsuko Maeda) is now pregnant. Therefore, he decides it’s time to make a quick visit to the parents and announce the news. A confusing welcome awaits him at home. His mother, after his 7-year absence, seems only surprised because Eichiki has not phoned before arriving, and his father Osamu (Akira Emoto) first calls him as a wimp slapping him and then organizes a big party with friends to celebrate the son and the grandson-to-be.

The party ends – in every sense – with Osamu being taken to the hospital due to an illness. Unfortunately, it is…

Bet Eightthirtyone beats the rainclouds – and feature opponents

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Bet Eightthirtyone (Betting Line) stormed home in the deep Pocono Pike to win the $13,000 harness racing pacing feature on Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 2) at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono in 1:55.1.

The race was conducted as a downpour came through the area; though the rain soon stopped, this would be the last event before the track was rerated from “fast” to “sloppy.”

Bet Eightthirtytwo and driver Marcus Miller (Curtis Salonick Photo)

Marcus Miller got the victorious gelding away third as Mister David C set the pace ahead of favored Stormy Beach, with second choice Letmecallyouback advancing via the always-tough tuck-then-first-over route and Ripplesonthebeach right on his back.

As they turned for home, Stormy Beach ducked to the inside of the pacesetter, but it soon became clear that the horse with the most pace was the one right behind him, as Bet Eightthirtyone gave a sharp burst when shown inside clearance and reached the wire three-quarters of a length ahead of Ripplesonthebeach, the only other horse moving with real velocity late.

BET EIGHTTHIRTYONE REPLAY

Marcus Miller’s father Erv trains the winner, who notched his first success of the season while missing his lifetime best by only a tick for owner D R Van Witzenburg. The gelding is three-for-18 lifetime with $32,584 in earnings.

The sky was sunny, though the track remained sloppy, by the time that No Drama Please (Trixton) accounted for the $12,500 co-featured trot, brushing to the lead in front of the stands and keeping control for a 1:55 victory.

Tom Fanning trains the gelding, now a winner of $396,838, for owner Joseph Smith. For driver George Napolitano Jr., the victory was one of four on the day.
