Cary Joji Fukunaga’s ‘Last of the Mohicans’ TV Series Set at HBO Max

Cary Joji Fukunaga’s “Last of the Mohicans” TV series has found a home at WarnerMedia’s HBO Max.

The Paramount Television-produced project — which is written by Emmy winner Fukunaga and Nick Osbourne, with “Watchmen’s” Nicole Kassell on board to direct — has been handed a script order from the forthcoming streaming service, a spokesperson for HBO Max tells TheWrap.

The project, which went into development at Paramount last April, is a retelling of James Fenimore Cooper’s novel about the French and Indian War that re-centers the classic tale on the unlikely romance between Uncas, a young Mohican, and Cora, the mixed-race daughter of a British colonel.

Fukunaga’s Parliament of Owls will produce the series along with Paramount and Anonymous Content.

“The clash of civilizations during the Seven Years War, which frames the story of ‘Last of the Mohicans’ has been a long-time passion of mine,” Fukunaga said when the project was first put into development. “It was a world war before the term even existed. The opportunity to recreate the story’s strong-willed and free-thinking characters, with talents including Nick Osborne and Nicole Kassell, is incredibly exciting to me. Together with Paramount TV and Anonymous Content, we have the chance to revive the forgotten ancestors that define American identity today.”

“The Last of the Mohicans” has been made several times for both television and film. There have been nine film adaptations, beginning with the 1911 film starring James Cruze, and most recently the 1992 version starring Daniel Day-Lewis. Past TV adaptions included 1957’s “Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans” and most recently 2004’s Italian animated series “The Last of the Mohicans.”

The Hollywood Reporter first reported that the “Last of the Mohicans”…

“As far as the wood’s edge”: 250 years since the removal of the Delaware people from the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania

A quarter of a millennium ago, the last publicly identified members of the Lenni Lenape (Delaware) tribe of Native Americans were forcibly removed from the territory in Eastern Pennsylvania where they had fought to establish a homeland. [1] Today there remains almost no public awareness of the scale and scope of this great historic crime, though the Delaware people remain active in drawing attention to their struggles both past and present. [2]

The real story of the removal of the Delaware clashes with the “official” narrative of American history as laid out by the New York Times. In 2019, the Times’ 1619 Project argued that America’s “true founding” was the year of the arrival of the first slave ship in Port Comfort, Virginia. Fundamental to the 1619 Project was the claim that “black Americans fought back alone” to “make America a democracy.” To the Times and the 1619 Project, the American Revolution was a counterrevolution led by reactionaries aimed at protecting slavery. The argument of 1619 Project founder Nikole Hannah-Jones and the Times amounted to a declaration that the British Empire was the progressive force in the struggle against the colonists.

The World Socialist Web Site and a section of principled historians have exposed the New York Times and the 1619 Project’s false, pseudo-historical foundation, but one element which has not been sufficiently addressed is its lack of any serious reference to the struggles of the Native Americans to resist the encroachment of their lands by the British Empire. Even the selection of 1619 as the year of America’s “true founding” leaves out the fact that the immensely complex and ultimately tragic dynamic between the Native population and Europeans began years earlier upon the arrival of the first colonists.

Osama Bin Laden Kill Team Use Hatchets from ‘Last of the Mohicans’ Knife-Maker

SEAL Team 6, best known for killing Osama bin Laden in 2011, used hatchets made by Daniel Winkler, a North Carolina knife maker who forged blades for the 1992 movie “The Last Mohicans” starring Daniel Dey-Lewis, according to the The New York Times.

The article titled, “The Secret History of SEAL Team 6: Quiet Killings and Blurred Lines,” claims that “during one period, members of Team 6’s Red Squadron — its logo shows crossed tomahawks below the face of a Native American warrior — received a Winkler hatchet after their first year in the squadron.”

In an interview, Winkler refused to say which SEAL units had received his tomahawks, but acknowledged that many were paid for by private donors.

Several former Team 6 members said that some SEAL members carried the hatchets on missions, and at least one killed an enemy fighter with the weapon.

Dom Raso, a former Team 6 member who left the Navy in 2012, said that hatchets were used “for breaching, getting into doors, manipulating small locks, hand-to-hand combat and other things.” He added that hatchet and blade kills occurred during his time with the SEALs.

“Whatever tool you need to protect yourself and your brothers, whether it is a blade or a gun, you are going to use,” said Raso, who has worked with Mr. Winkler in producing a blade.

The article also claims many SEAL operators refused to use tomahawks — because they were too bulky to take into combat and not as effective as firearms.

“It’s a dirty business,” said one former senior enlisted Team 6 member. “What’s the difference between shooting them as…

TidalHealth’s Anthony passes away suddenly

TidalHealth representatives this week announced the sudden death of Dr. Harry Anthony, a primary-care physician who practiced in Georgetown.

The 53-year-old father of three died unexpectedly on Saturday, Aug. 27, while vacationing with his family, they said.

Anthony had worked for TidalHealth since 1998, and had served as chief medical officer of TidalHealth Nanticoke and for its primary- and specialty-care offices for the past four years.

Patients can call (302) 297-2587 to transition to Dr. Joseph Karnish, Dr. Maritza Parreno or Jessica Baxter, a nurse practitioner, who are all in the Georgetown office.

Anthony was past president of the TidalHealth Nanticoke Medical Staff, in 2009 and 2010, and a former member of the Executive Committee and Quality Control for the Board of Directors, and had served the healthcare team and providers as credentials chair and department chair for Family Practice.

He is survived by his wife, Thiele, daughters Sam and Ariella, and son Dominic.

Funeral information wasn’t yet complete as of Coastal Point press time this week.

“Dr. Anthony’s leadership and vision were essential during some of the most formative years of TidalHealth Nanticoke,” TidalHealth CEO Steve Leonard stated.

“His contributions to our growth and his dedication to his patients consistently defined what a provider should be to his community,” he said.

Penny Short, president of TidalHealth Nanticoke, said the doctor was respected, admired and loved by his peers and patients and that he will “always be remembered as a champion of healthcare for our hospital, health system and community.”

“He welcomed every challenge and accepted every offer to help us improve our delivery of care, our quality and outcomes,” she stated.

Anthony was characterized as the “quintessential family physician always putting his patients first,” by Dr. Karin DiBari, president of TidalHealth Medical Partners.

“He was passionate about quality and provided invaluable leadership to the medical group as…
