Security Council extends mandate of UN mission for Iraq

UNITED NATIONS, May 30 (Xinhua) — The UN Security Council on Tuesday adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for another year until May 31, 2024, while retaining its core tasks.

Resolution 2682, which won the unanimous support of the 15-member Security Council, requested that the UN secretary-general’s special representative for Iraq and UNAMI prioritize the provision of advice, support and assistance to the government and people of Iraq on advancing inclusive, political dialogue and national and community-level reconciliation.

The council also requested the special representative and UNAMI to further advise and assist the government of Iraq in strengthening electoral preparation and processes to ensure free and fair elections.

Meanwhile, the Security Council requested the special representative and UNAMI to promote, support and facilitate, in coordination with the Iraqi government, the timely, voluntary and dignified return or local integration of internally displaced persons and displaced Iraqis in Syria.

The resolution further requested the UN secretary-general to conduct and provide the Security Council, no later than March 31, 2024, with an independent strategic review of UNAMI, in consultation with the Iraqi government and other sides, assessing current threats to Iraq’s peace and security, as well as the continued relevance of UNAMI’s tasks and priorities.

UNAMI is a political mission established by the Security Council in 2003 at the request of the Iraqi government in the wake of the invasion of Iraq by a U.S.-led coalition. Enditem

Lackawanna County church honors military members

A church in Lackawanna County held a special service Sunday as a marine sergeant shared his story.

CLARKS GREEN, Pa. — While it may have looked like a typical service at the Servant Church of the Abingtons in Clarks Green, many veterans and military families filled the pews for a special sermon ahead of Memorial Day.

Including Gina and Jay Jayne, who met during their time in Germany while in the Army.

“The service is for all veterans, first responders, and it just gives them a feeling of hope,” said Gina Jayne from Newton Township.

The Jaynes planned this church service and invited Sergeant Carlos Evans to give service men and women that feeling of hope.

Sergeant Evans came home from his deployment in Afghanistan without his legs and his left hand after stepping on an IED.

Today, the Marine Corps Chaplin shared what Memorial Day means to him.

“So it’s very important to bring awareness, especially to the young generation, that the freedom we are enjoying today has a price,”  explained Sergeant Carlos Evans, U.S. Marine Corps.

One of the goals of his sermon was to make sure service men and women feel seen.

“40% are veterans in the community. And they’re amazing because they not only serve their community, but their church and their families, they are so involved,” Gina Jayne added.

Sergeant Evans hopes sharing his near-death experience will encourage other veterans to open up about their stories too.

“There’s purpose in our scars. That we’re not victims of our tears. That we have a purpose, we have opportunity, to look at yourself the way God sees you,” he mentioned.

And help others who may not know someone in the armed forces understands the sacrifices military personnel make.

“Today, I’m touching more people with only one hand…

Fast winners in Tuesday Pocono features – U.S. Trotting News

Fast winners in Tuesday Pocono features

May 30, 2023, by PHHA for Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania

Wilkes-Barre, PA – Ever since the Game Of Claims Series earlier in the spring, the Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania Race Office has been able to keep together multiple divisions of the top claiming handicap trotters, and on Tuesday (May 30) afternoon two $15,500 sections were featured.

The Wheeling N Dealin gelding Diehard Seelster parlayed a pocket trip into a victory for the second straight week in the faster division, gaining into a :28.2 last quarter for driver Marcus Miller to take an easy victory in a 1:54.4 mile, a tick off the lifetime mark he set last week. However, if Diehard Seelster is to run his winning streak to three, he’ll be doing it for different connections, for the horse was claimed from owner Jerry Zollo and trainer Marc Mosher for his $25,000 tag.

Diehard Seelster took a division of Tuesday’s featured trot at Pocono. Curtis Salonick photo.

In the other division the Muscle Mass gelding Dart Guy came up with the mile of his life, grinding first-over to the lead and holding off the field in a lifetime best of 1:55.3. You don’t often get 20-1 on driver Matt Kakaley at Pocono, but you did here if you backed the Steven Brabrook-trained trotter, owned by Jaypaul Hoover.

There were also four divisions of the $15,000 “nw 4 races” class for the various gaits and sexes. Two of the races were for trotters, and trainer/driver Åke Svanstedt won both with 3-year-old fillies bred on the Continent.

Pure Hope S was certainly impressive in her 2023 debut, making the lead at the quarter and then striding home in :27.3 to…

Connecticut Sun honor legend Taj McWilliams-Franklin

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Taj McWilliams Franklin — “Mama Taj, Grandma Taj,” as she was commonly known to hall of famer Lindsay Whalen and countless other players who crossed paths with McWilliams-Franklin — stared into the rafters of Mohegan Sun Arena last Sunday afternoon. She watched as the Connecticut Sun slowly unveiled a fresh new Sun Legends banner including her No. 11 jersey.

McWilliams-Franklin, who was joined by Sun President, Jen Rizzotti; Mystics general manager and former Sun head coach, Mike Thibault; and two members of the Mohegan Tribal Council at center court, tried to hold back tears as she stood at a podium in an arena where she spent the majority of her WNBA playing career. She stepped back and took a deep breath as she soaked up the moment and what it meant to her.

“I never thought I would be here,” McWilliams-Franklin told the Sun faithful who stayed after the game to watch the ceremony. “You belong here!” a fan from across the court interjected loud enough to kickstart another eruption of applause from the crowd. “I just wanted to be part of something special,” McWilliams-Franklin continued. “And I found that here in Connecticut.”

McWilliams-Franklin was drafted by the Orlando Miracle in the third round of the 1999 draft and spent eight years with the franchise (four years with Orlando and four years in Connecticut) before playing into her 40s for various other WNBA teams.

She helped guide the Sun to two WNBA Finals in 2004 and 2005, won a championship with the Detroit Shock in 2008 and was part of the starting lineup that helped push the Minnesota Lynx to their first WNBA title in 2011.

During her time with the franchise, McWilliams-Franklin earned five All-Star appearances (1999-2001, 2005, 2006), made the All-Defensive Second…

Heroes of the Faith — Samson Occom, Mohegan missionary

Samson Occom (1723–1792) was a prominent Mohegan missionary who ministered to New England Indians. This year is the 300th anniversary of his birth.

Occom was the son of Joshua Tomacham and his wife Sarah of New London, Connecticut. A member of the Mohegan Nation, he was descended from Uncas, a Mohegan chief. (James Fenimore Cooper fictionally used Uncas as a Mohican Indian in his novel “The Last of the Mohicans.”)

When he was around 16 or 17, Occom was converted during the Great Awakening. He wrote in his autobiography that he found “salvation through Jesus Christ, and was enabled to put my trust in Him alone. … I found serenity and pleasure of soul, in serving God.”

He studied theology for four years at Moor’s Indian Charity School’s Latin school, founded by Eleazar Wheelock, a Congregational minister. He learned to read and speak Latin, Greek and Hebrew.

In 1749 he became a teacher, preacher and judge among the Montaukett in Montauk, Long Island. He married Mary Fowler, a Montaukett woman. They had ten children.

Evangelist

He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1759. For two years, he traveled to New York to evangelize the Oneidas.  He made converts and mediated conflicts between colonists and Native Americans.

When Occom returned to the Mohegan, Wheelock persuaded him to travel to England to raise funds for his charity school. Wheelock agreed to look after his family. Occom sailed to England in December 1765 and returned in May 1768. Upon arriving, he accompanied evangelist George Whitefield to meet the Earl of Dartmouth, who contributed 50 guineas. He met John Newton, pastor and writer of “Amazing Grace,” and preached to King George III, who contributed 200 pounds for the school. Occom was extremely popular throughout Great Britain. He preached about 400 sermons and drew large…

‘Wall of people’ say goodbye to Gabriel Cabral. Hamilton worker died after Stelco incident: family

Before he died on May 16 after a workplace incident, Gabriel Cabral was leading a very full life.

The 32-year-old would often be out the door of the Stoney Creek home he shared with his mom and younger brother before 4 a.m., so he could fit in a gym workout before work. Then it was off to Nanticoke in Norfolk County, about an hour’s drive away, where he was a sheet metal worker at Stelco’s Lake Erie Works.

After a physically taxing day, he’d relax at one of his favourite fishing holes on the Grand River, trying to snag some pickerel or bass. Then he’d head home, where he’d often sneak in another workout before going to bed, according to his family.

“He was obsessive about the things that he liked,” said brother Shane, 30. “I tried doing the 4 a.m. gym thing with him and it was insane. I would be so tired and he would be just telling me to hurry up and already on his way out before I was halfway done.”

His mother Pam Fraser says she often worried about his safety on the job, but he would assure her that he was looking out for himself, and she knew he was also the type to look out for others.

Three kids in Maple Leafs jerseys smile at the camera. From left: Gabriel, Matt and Shane Cabral are pictured as children in a family photo. (Submitted by Pam Fraser)

“He wasn’t afraid to call people out” if they weren’t doing things by the book, Fraser told CBC Hamilton. “He wasn’t afraid to say ‘no’.”

Gabriel did not return to home – which he also shared with the family’s beloved Wheaten terrier Rosie – after work on April 25.

That day, according to his family, he was burned so badly at work that his family says…
