Which teams made our South Jersey Mean 15 softball rankings after the sixth week?

The regular season is down to the home stretch.

As the postseason draws near, we take another swing at the South Jersey Mean 15 rankings for our seven-county coverage area.

Mean 15 rankings

  1. Egg Harbor Township (16-1, last week’s ranking: 1). The Eagles attempt to defend their Cape-Atlantic League Tournament title this week. EHT is the top seed in the six-team field.

2. Clayton (20-1, 2). The Clippers became the area’s first 20-win team of the season. Clayton has won 19 games in a row, including three en route to the Fred Powell Tournament title on Saturday. Clayton has won 20-or-more games in three straight seasons.

3. Paul VI (17-3, 3). The Eagles extended their winning streak to 10 games and kept pace with Moorestown in the Olympic Conference National Division title race.

4. Cinnaminson (16-3, 5). It’s 14 wins in a row for the Pirates, who clinched the Burlington County League Patriot Division title.

5. Delran (15-4, 6). The Bears have won seven straight games and earned the crown in what many feel is one of the toughest divisions in the Garden State: the Burlington County League Liberty Division.

6. Lenape (18-6, 4). Lenape suffered its first lost in the Olympic Conference American Division with a 4-3 setback to Rancocas Valley.

7. Northern Burlington (12-6, 7). The Greyhounds are 3-4 in their last seven games, but hope the bumps and bruises of the past two weeks turn into muscle in the season’s most important stretch.

8. Cherokee (15-4, 8). A nine-game winning streak came to a halt with a 5-4 loss to Lenape.

Man whose body was found partially buried in Mohegan Park had been shot to death, Norwich police say

NORWICH — Local police say the death of an unidentified man whose body was found partially buried in Mohegan Park over the weekend has been ruled a homicide. 

Police said the man was Black or Hispanic and between the ages of 35 and 50. His remains had been autopsied as of Monday evening, police said.

The body was discovered by a passerby walking through Mohegan Park Sunday afternoon. Just before 4:15 p.m. Sunday, the passerby “noticed something protruding from the ground,” a Norwich police spokesperson said. 

“Believing that it might be a person, he called the Norwich Police Department to report his findings,” Lt. Anthony Gomes said Monday. 

Gomes said responding patrol officers discovered the person’s body in a shallow grave. He had been fatally shot, Gomes said. Evidence located at the scene indicated the killing did not occur inside the park and represented a “targeted attack” on the victim, Gomes said.

The man stood approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighed 150 to 160 pounds and had black hair styled in box braids, according to Gomes. He was also missing his top four front teeth and had a goatee or short beard, Gomes said.

No description of the clothing he was wearing at the time of his death was available, according to Gomes.

The investigation is ongoing, Gomes said.

PA Hunter Who Shot Neighbor In Head Instead Of Deer Learns His Fate

Michael A. Lloyd of Boalsburg was found tending to his neighbor when State College Police arrived at the scene of the shooting on Lenape Lane in College Township on Dec. 4, 2021, as Daily Voice previously reported.

Lloyd had fired two shots from a .45mm semiautomatic pistol at a “deer” on a hill across the road or about 10 to 15 yards up the bottom of his neighbor’s driveway, according to the criminal complaint.

He had hoped out, fired, got back in his car, went home, and surveyed his neighbor’s land for the deer– which is when he found his neighbor, according to investigators. 

The 81-year-old man had a 1 to 2-inch section of his skull removed at UPMC Altoona, but he pulled through although he testified that his life has “dramatically changed,” as WJAC reported. 

Photos posted to Lloyd’s Facebook page show deer taxidermy hanging in his home.

Lloyd was charged with the following on Jan. 28, 2022, according to his court docket:

  • M2 Recklessly Endangering Another Person
  • M2 Shoot At Kill Injuring A Human Hunting
  • S2 Taking/Possession Of Game Or Wildlife
  • S3 Use Vehicle Conveyance Propelled By Other Than Military Personnel
  • S4 Unlawful Presence Of A Loaded Firearm Vehicle
  • S4 Unlawful Shooting On Or Across Highway
  • S5 Use Semi Automatic Rifle or Pistol
  • M2 Propulsion Of Missiles Onto Roadways

Lloyd has since apologized and submitted a plea, court records show. He will serve three to 23.5 months in prison and pay approximately $30,000 in restitution.

On Thursday, Weis Markets announced it has completed the remodel of its store in Duryea.

At the ribbon cutting ceremony, Weis Markets announced that it will begin work on a major remodel at its store in Nanticoke.

Zimbabwe makes arrests of UK health workers recruitment agents

A couple who tricked people into falling for false job placements in Ireland as well as Canada and the UK have been arrested in Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police arrested Sitshengisiwe Ndlovu and Alison Unami for fraudulently promoting overseas jobs that led to a loss of $134,552 (123,327) for their victims.

According to police, the two posed as agents of an undisclosed company that claimed they could secure jobs and work permits in Canada, United Kingdom and Ireland for Zimbabweans seeking to relocate.

In a statement seen by Pindula News, police said the arrests were made in connection with 46 counts of fraud between August 2022 and May 3, 2023.

It was reported that on May 3, Police in Bulawayo arrested Alison Unami (30) after a report had been made by one of the complainants.

The suspect was arrested while loading property in a vehicle, as the couple prepared to vacate from their offices.

The other suspect, Sitshengisiwe Ndlovu (46) was later arrested at Bulawayo Police Station, where she had visited her husband.

Police investigations revealed that processing of the purported employment opportunities was promised within three weeks following the payment of US$4,000, with interviews conducted via WhatsApp.

The suspects would then give the complainants excuses after the waiting period lapsed.

Some 46 victims fell for the scam and were defrauded approximately $134 552 in total.

Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged the public to exercise caution and thoroughly research individuals and employment agencies claiming to assist with job placements abroad.

Police: Man found in shallow grave at Mohegan Park in Norwich a homicide victim

NORWICH ― An unidentified man whose body was found partially buried in a shallow grave at a Norwich park was the victim of a homicide, police said

Norwich police said a pedestrian at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Sunday noticed “something” protruding from the ground at Mohegan Park that he believed was a person. Patrol officers verified it was a deceased individual and an autopsy determined the cause of death as a gunshot wound.

Police on Monday afternoon said evidence suggests the victim, a Black or Hispanic man between the ages of 35-50, was not murdered at the park. The incident appears to be the result of a targeted attack on the victim, police said.

The victim is described as being approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing between 150-160 pounds with black hair/box braids and a goatee or short beard. The deceased was missing his top four front teeth, police said.

More: At 15, he brutally killed a Norwich teacher and her son. Reform gave him a parole hearing.

There was no clothing description and the man’s identity is still unknown.

Stockbridge tribe seeks to recover ancestral homeland at Fenn Farm

STOCKBRIDGE — On a pristine, forested property at the northern tip of Monument Mountain is Fenn Farm — 351 acres of scenic undeveloped land.

The ancestral homelands once belonged to the Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohican Indians. Last fall, it went on the market for $3 million following the death in July of owner Clover Swann, the artist, author and longtime member of the Stockbridge Land Trust.

Her former house has been carved out of the potential sale marketed by William Pitt/Sotheby’s International Realty in Great Barrington.

Last week the tribe submitted a $2.5 million funding application to the state’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Action Grant program for the purchase and conservation of the property. Grant awards are expected to be announced this summer.

“Since we’ve been dispossessed of our land out East, we’ve always attempted to reacquire our originally ceded territory,” said Shannon Holsey, tribal president based in Bowler, Wisconsin. “Our stars must have aligned when this property became available, with the outreach of allies and partners throughout Massachusetts to assist us.”
