The West Chester Green Team continued its Legendary Lenape Summer Program at Historic Bondsville Mill Park and Gardens in Downingtown on
July 15. The program teaches children and their families about the Lenape tribes that lived in Chester County

Carrie Hawk, Environmental Educator with Stroud Water Research Center and member of Restore Our Roots, brought various animal skins and skulls and led activities to teach a group of families about the Lenape peoples and the animals that lived in Chester County in Lenape times. She showed the group turtle shells and how the Lenape used them as rattles and bowls. Hawk also explained how the toughness of turtle shells was based on the species, the diet and the amount of sunlight the turtle received

Hawk passed around different animal pelts and bones that the Lenape used as clothing, tools and weapons. The Lenape made bones and hooves into jewelry for ceremonial wear. With beaver pelts, the Lenape would use the waterproof fur to keep warm and dry in the winter.

Two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference matchup on Sunday with the Sun vs Mystics at the Mohegan Sun Arena. This is the third meeting between the teams in 2023 after the Connecticut Sun beat the Washington Mystics in back-to-back games in May.

Sun To Cover Spread Once Again

The Connecticut side has covered the spread in over half of their games this season which informs our Sun vs Mystics tips from the off. We have scoured several WNBA betting sites to find the value picks for this one. 

Their previous wins over the Mystics were by single digits, but they saw off the Seattle Storm with an emphatic 20-point advantage on Thursday night to improve to 13-5 on the season.

Washington has gone just 7-9 against the spread in 2023. Admittedly, they are up in fourth in net rating which makes them amongst the best WNBA tips for this market. This is still a team we expect to hover around .500 for most of the season.

Georgetown and Laurel advance in District 3

Little League All StarsLittle League All Stars

Seaford – Georgetown’s Mason Eikenberry star shined the brightest amongst the rest in the second round of the District 3 major league all star game on Friday night.

Eikenberry led Georgetown to a 12-2 win over Nanticoke in the second round of the tournament. He earned the win on the mound in relief allowing two hits, no runs with eight strikeouts and allowed just one walk in four innings of work. Eikenberry was 4 for 4 at the plate with four rbi’s and scored two runs.

“I was just sitting back expecting curveballs, but was getting a lot of inside fastballs,” Eikenberry said.

Maxton Marzullo had a pair of hits for Georgetown while John Klosiewicz, Warren Davis, Corbin Pettit and Marshall West each recorded a hit.

Tyler Hitchens had a homerun to lead off the second inning followed by a double by Jaxon Lathbury for Seaford. Gianni Bartucci and Miguel Sabino added hits for Seaford.

Georgetown will play Laurel on Sunday at 7:00pm at the Nanticoke Little League Park in Seaford. Seaford will travel to Lewes Little League Park on Saturday where they will face Woodbridge at 8:00pm.

In the second game of the doubleheader pitching was key again. Nathan Moore tossed a one hitter over six innings striking out seven while allowing one walk and a hit batter. Moore also helped break the game open with a two rbi double as Laurel defeated Lewes 5-0.

Plenty of happy campers take part in Wood County 4-H summer programs

MINERAL WELLS — Local 4-H members participated in a variety of activities this summer at camp which wrapped up on June 30.

More than 200 youth were involved in one or more of four camps this summer at the Wood County 4-H Camp in Mineral Wells.

One-day camp for 5-8-year-old campers kicked off the month and provided kids an opportunity to spend a day at 4-H camp. The regional 4-H horse camp provided learning opportunities for 40 kids from Wood and surrounding counties to learn a variety of disciplines. Horse ownership was not required to attend this camp, and all the participants had the opportunity to ride during the week. Wood County 4-H also hosted more than 130 campers at younger and older 4-H residential camps.

This year campers participated in a variety of learning opportunities including cooking, sewing, folk and line dancing, STEM, nature discoveries, fishing, shooting sports, cake decorating, photography, arts and crafts, and more.

Special guests at 4-H Camp included presentations from the Boy Scouts of America Kootaga Indian Dancers, virtual reality careers with MOV Career Connections, Mindfulness and Kidding Around Yoga with Pamela Santer of Mindful West Virginia, Mineral Wells Volunteer Fire Department, and basic beekeeping with Mountaineer Beekeepers. Older 4-H Campers had a surprise visit from the West Virginia University Mountaineer Mascot, Mikel Hager.
