JVMI Co-founder Tahar Boumedra: We Must End the Impunity of Iran’s Regime

Tahar BoumedraTahar Boumedra

An international conference was convened on August 21 at the headquarters of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), near Paris, to address the political prisoner massacre that took place during the summer of 1988 in Iran.

Among the distinguished guests and speakers, was the former Chief of UNAMI Human Rights Office in Iraq (2012), Mr. Tahar Boumedra, Director of the Justice for the Victims of the 1988 Massacre in Iran (JVMI).

Drawing from his own experience as the former UNAMI Human Rights Office Chief, Mr. Boumedra recalled his observations and pointed out that during his tenure, he directly witnessed atrocities committed by the pro-Iranian regime government in Baghdad.

He highlighted the government of Nouri al-Maliki deliberately starving and depriving political refugees in Camp Ashraf of necessary medical care while poisoning the potable water with uranium-contaminated substance. Mr. Boumedra stressed that these actions amounted to a blatant crime of denying people sustenance.

The full speech of Mr. Tahar Boumedra’s speech follows:

Madam Rajavi, brothers and sisters, eminents, specialists, here with us. My experience is very hard in Camp Ashraf. And I would like to borrow the statement, Cheller’s statement, that you do not need a PhD to recognize a crime.

What I personally witnessed is that a government decides to starve a population and they do it under the supervision of the United Nations. I witnessed when the convoys bring in provisions to Camp Ashraf, the Iraqi government used to stop the convoy before the camp, expose the provisions, the food, to 50 degrees centigrade sun, three days out of the camp to make sure that the food perishes before they allow it into the camp. So, we…

10:30 a.m. update: Rain continuing to fall across north central Ohio

MANSFIELD — A flood warning is in effect for Richland and Ashland counties until noon Thursday, according to the National Weather Service office in Cleveland.

The warning was issued Thursday at 4:36 a.m. after two to four inches of rain had fallen across north central Ohio.

National Weather Service radar image Thursday at 6:38 a.m.

As of 10:30 a.m., rain was continuing to fall across north central Ohio with the occasional flash of lightning and roll of thunder.

The Richland County Emergency Management Agency reported at 10:30 a.m. that there was high water at Ohio 13 and U.S. 30 and the “subway” on Ashland Road on the city’s east side.

Richland County Engineer Adam Gove reported at 10:35 a.m. the following county roads were closed in the county due to high water:

— London West Road between Broadway and Plymouth Springmill in Plymouth Township.

— Champion Road between Hazelbrush and London West Road in Plymouth Township.

— London East Road between Fackler and Ganges Five-Points Road in Cass Township.

— Mount Zion Road between Crimson and Smart roads in Mifflin Township.

“We have other roads with water over them, but those are the ones completely closed,” Gove said.

The NWS said earlier flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is occurring. Numerous roads remain closed due to flooding. Low-water crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable.

On Thursday at 7:21 a.m., the Ohio Department of Transportation announced multiple routes in Ashland County were closed due to flooding.

— U.S.250, between CR 175 and Twp Rd.63 (Rowsburg to Wayne County Line)

— U.S.250, between U.S. 224 and Twp Rd 388

— SR 302, between Wayne Co. line and CR 175 (open again as of 10:30 a.m.)

Former State Rep. Wendi Thomas Appointed to Lenape Valley Board

DOYLESTOWN, PA — The Honorable Wendi Thomas of Richboro has been appointed to the Board of Directors at the Lenape Valley Foundation in Bucks County.

As a former Pennsylvania State Representative for District 178 from 2018-22, Thomas has devoted her career to serving as an advocate for mental health.

Among the many committees she has worked on throughout her political career, she notably served as co-chair of the Mental Health Caucus and was appointed to the Blue-Ribbon Commission on Mental Health and the Suicide Prevention Taskforce.

She was recognized as Legislative Champion by Mental Health America (MHA), which honors legislators from across the country for their commitment to mental healthcare reform. She has had a particular interest in highlighting services available for frontline workers suffering from pandemic-related mental health issues and promoting awareness of human trafficking.

Prior to becoming a state representative, Thomas spent her career working in health insurance and health advocacy. In addition, she has been an active volunteer leader in her local community. She was a member of the Council Rock School District Board from 2009 to 2018 and served in numerous positions including president, vice president, finance committee chair and academic standards chair. Dedicating her time and efforts to advancing safety, academics, and resources for children has been a priority of hers.

“I am acutely aware of the shortage of providers in the mental health field for individuals of all ages and I hope to continue to play a role in making quality mental healthcare services available to all who are in need,” said Thomas. “I am excited to keep working within the community for causes that are important to me, and I look forward to serving as an advocate for Lenape Valley Foundation.”

For 65 years, Lenape Valley Foundation has partnered with residents of Bucks County encountering…

Michener Museum to Present “Never Broken” Exhibition

“DELAWARE BANDOLIER BAG”: This work from the 1850s is featured in “Never Broken: Visualizing Lenape Histories,” on view at the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pa., September 9 through January 14.

The James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pa., will present “Never Broken: Visualizing Lenape Histories,” an exhibition that considers the power of art to construct and dismantle inaccurate Indigenous histories through a display of contemporary work by Lenape (also called Delaware) artists in dialogue with historic Lenape ceramics, beadwork, and other cultural objects and representations of Penn’s Treaty by European American artists.

On view September 9 through January 14, “Never Broken” features recent and newly commissioned work by Ahchipaptunhe (Delaware Tribe of Indians and Cherokee), Joe Baker (Delaware Tribe of Indians), Holly Wilson (Delaware Nation and Cherokee), and Nathan Young (Delaware Tribe of Indians, Pawnee, and Kiowa) that express personal and tribal identity and address the Lenape’s violent displacement from Lenapehoking, the Lenape homeland which encompasses the region where the Michener Art Museum currently stands.

Curated by Baker, co-founder and executive director of Lenape Center in Manhattan, and Laura Turner Igoe, Ph.D., chief curator at the Michener Art Museum, “Never Broken” will include approximately 50 artworks and objects from 10 private and institutional lenders.

Igoe said, “We are excited to share this groundbreaking exhibition with our visitors. Through a focus on Lenape art and culture and a critical examination of historical visualizations of Native and European American relationships, ‘Never Broken’ demonstrates the ways in which art can create, challenge, and rewrite history.”

“The Michener Museum of Art has assembled the legitimate heirs to Lenapehoking in this evocative new exhibit, “Never Broken: Visualizing Lenape Histories,” said Baker. “Four contemporary Lenape artists through their arts practice push back against a silenced history…
