About the Native American Advancement Corporation
The Native American Advancement Corporation (NAAC) is a focus organization on behalf of the advancement and development of all North American Natives. Its constituent organizers chartered NAAC as an expression of a need to promote the Native Americans’ interests by ensuring support, addressing issues of concern, and promoting self-sufficiency. NAAC’s focus is charitable, educational, and service-oriented agency based in Bridgeton, NJ Cumberland County. We aim to create opportunities for land preservation, cultural preservation, training, employment, revenue, financial literacy, homeownership, home rehabilitation, maintenance, and repair programs, for Cumberland, Gloucester, Salem, Atlantic, and Cape May counties.
About the Green Acres Program
Green Acres’ mission is to achieve, in partnership with others, a system of interconnected open spaces, whose protection will preserve and enhance New Jersey’s natural environment and its historic, scenic, and recreational resources for public use and enjoyment. The Green Acres Program was created in 1961 to meet New Jersey’s growing recreation and conservation needs. Together with public and private partners, Green Acres has protected well over a million and a half acres of open space and provided hundreds of outdoor recreational facilities in communities around the State.
About New Jersey Conservation Foundation
New Jersey Conservation Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, statewide organization devoted to preserving land and protecting nature throughout New Jersey’s rural, suburban, and urban landscapes for the benefit of all. Since 1960, we have preserved more than 140,000 acres of open space, farmland, and parks. We also manage 17 nature preserves, conduct public outreach and education programs, and advocate for sensible land use and climate policies that will protect the health of New Jersey communities for generations to come. For more information, go to www.njconservation.org.
With the threat of global languagesbeing lost at the rate of at least one per month, linguists, institutions, researchers, and affected communities are collaborating to maintain, revitalize, and celebrate Indigenous languages.
Languages across the world are endangered due to steady declines in usage as successive generations become bilingual for a variety of political, societal, and cultural reasons, including pressure to avoid discrimination, according to The Language Conservancy (TLC), a U.S. nonprofit working to protect and revitalize languages across the globe.
Without intervention, this loss of knowledge could triple within 40 years. By the end of the century, 1,500 languages could cease to exist, according to a 2021 study by a group of Australian researchers, “Global Predictors of Language Endangerment and the Future of Linguistic Diversity,” published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution. Research shows that certain Indigenous languages are at the greatest risk of disappearing.
Since speech is the core of one’s identity and culture, preservation of Indigenous languages can foster health and success, TLC finds. Experts also say language is essential to preserving cultural and historical knowledge, worldviews, and forms of correspondence.
Through Indigenous community partnerships, U.S. higher education institutions are a part of the movement working to stem this crisis. A project at Montclair State University (MSU), a public research university in New Jersey, focuses on reviving the Native American Munsee language, while faculty and students at Haverford College, a private liberal arts school in Pennsylvania, are working in Oaxaca, Mexico, to safeguard Zapotec languages.

Scholars and students in MSU’s new Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) minor program are working with the Turtle Clan of the Ramapough Lenape Nation on projects encompassing both environmental justice and language revitalization.

NANTICOKE — A Nanticoke man is facing vehicular homicide charges related to an alcohol-involved crash that killed his friend and injured another person nearly two years ago.
Police in Nanticoke say James Edward Gordon, 42, of Garfield Street, had a blood alcohol level of .209 percent after he crashed a Chevrolet Tahoe down an embankment at Field and College streets on Dec. 23, 2021, according to court records.
Richard C. Gimbi Sr., 65, of Mountain Top, a rear seat passenger in the Chevrolet, died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Facility in Plains Township on Dec. 27, 2021. Another passenger, Terra Hill, sustained injuries to her head, bruised ribs and a broken left leg in two places, court records say.
Police filed charges of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, and two counts each of reckless endangerment and driving under the influence. The charges were filed Monday with District Judge Donald Whittaker in Nanticoke.
According to the criminal complaint:
Police responded to the crash at Field and College streets finding the Chevrolet down an embankment and Gordon standing outside the driver’s side door at about 11:30 p.m. Dec. 23, 2021.
Gordon initially said a deer ran out in front of them, and then uttered, “I have been drinking all day; I’m drunk,” the complaint says.
An empty Heineken beer bottle was on the ground next to the driver’s side door and an unopened 24 ounce can of Keystone Light fell from the rear driver’s side door.
Gimbi and Hall had to be extricated from the vehicle by Nanticoke…
Jonas Brothers enchant fans in intimate Mohegan Sun Arena performance
The Jonas Brothers delivered an intimate performance at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut on August 17th.
At the tour’s fifth concert, the band treated a packed crowd of fervent fans to a rendition of 67 songs from their extensive career. This marked their fifth appearance at the venue, a place with significant meaning as they had debuted there shortly after the release of “Year 3000” in 2007.
President of Mohegan Sun sports and entertainment, Thomas Cantone, shared, “Their very first performance [at Mohegan Sun Arena] was a halftime show at our Connecticut Sun WNBA game, and then years later they came back as headliners in the arena.”
“We’re invested in them as an act and them personally. We know their family and all of that,” Cantone added.
For Nick, Joe, and Kevin, the performance held a sense of homecoming, as Cantone referred to it. The trio showcased their musical journey, delighting fans with tracks from albums such as Jonas Brothers, A Little Bit Longer, Lines, Vines & Trying Times, Happiness Begins, and The Album. Attendees proudly displayed both recent and vintage JoBros merchandise, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The band took to Instagram to express their post-concert sentiments. “Unforgettable night last night,” they wrote, acknowledging “each show has exceeded our expectations.”
During the Connecticut show, the Jonas Brothers made personal connections with the audience, engaging in discussions about favorite songs from their discography. The trio even extended well wishes to a recently engaged couple from the stage, culminating in a heartwarming “kiss cam” segment.
After the performance, Kevin, 35, expressed his gratitude on his personal Instagram account. He shared photos from the show and thanked the fans for their overwhelming…

“Pretendians” — like the three University of Kansas professors whose claims to be members of Indian tribes have recently been debunked — are only part of the problem.
Shawnee Chief Ben Barnes
According to Shawnee Chief Ben Barnes, the Government Accountability Office and reporting by the Los Angeles Times, there are hundreds of fake tribes bilking millions of dollars annually from taxpayers.
Barnes said a GAO report from 2010 shows 26 separate federal programs which are being defrauded by 24 fake tribes that are not federally recognized.
GAO report 12-358 says federal agencies awarded more than $100 million in funding to the 26 non-federally recognized tribes for fiscal years 2007 through 2010.
The report said that the majority — some $76 million — went to the “Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina” which has state recognition, if only partial federal recognition, and is actively pursuing federal recognition.
The report was careful to note that most program recipients are, in fact, federally-recognized tribes and that funding to non-recognized tribes accounted for only about 2.7% of the $2.6 billion spent over the four years studied — which is still a considerable sum.
Most of the grant funds are distributed by various federal agencies to non-profit organizations under the various “tribes.”
As an example, the Department of Health and Human Services distributed funds to two non-federally recognized tribes in New Jersey during the 4-year review period — the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indians of New Jersey and the Powhatan Renape Nation.
While there have been a couple of “concurrent resolutions” regarding the “tribes,” the resolutions do not have the force of law, and the GAO report says the New Jersey Commission on Native American Affairs has been at pains to make clear neither tribe has state recognition — let…
It was the spring of 1754. Two white men killed a member of the Stockbridge-Munsee band. The victim, named Waumpaumcorse, was described as “an Indian man of this town” killed “in the woods of Stockbridge.” Stockbridge was a mere 15 years old, and this was the first recorded murder in the village. The details were unearthed thanks to the exceptional research abilities of Lion Miles.
The murderers of Waumpaumcorse were caught and put on trial. However, one of the murderers was acquitted and the other was found guilty of the lesser offense of manslaughter. The Stockbridge-Munsee community was angry at what they considered an injustice.
Apparently, this provoked a number of the Stockbridge-Munsee community to seek revenge. A contemporaneous report read, “The Negro Servant of one of the Neighbors made known a secret plot.”¹
The report identified a young member of the Stockbridge-Munsee community who told the servant the following, “Now there are a Number of them who were come to a Determination to be revenged for the murder of Waumpaumcors and that several of them had already been abroad to bring in some Strangers to their Assistance, that their purpose was to kill as many of the English in Stockbridge as they could.”
In fact, what the community did was petition the General Court in Boston. The court awarded the family of Waumpaumcorse six pounds. However, even that small amount did not arrive. There was a delay in sending the money, and that delay threatened to reignite the desire for revenge.
At the urging of town officials Joseph Dwight and Timothy Woodbridge, the General Court increased the amount to 20 pounds and sent it off immediately to the near relatives of Waumpaumcorse “to Satisfy & Quiet the Indians at Stockbridge.”
Here endeth the tale of the very first murder…

The campaign kicks off with a party in Luzerne County at Mohegan Pennsylvania.
Team Members:
Jennifer Ducharme of Shavertown ran through the five boroughs of New York City as a member of Team Allied Services. Initially, she thought this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, with emphasis on the “once.”
“I do remember saying to my mom after, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to do this again.’ And she said, ‘You don’t have to decide right now.’ But here we are,” Ducharme said.
Ducharme is one of many members of Team Allied Services who volunteer to train and run a marathon and raise money for Allied Services.
“I did it once, and it was a long, hard day, and I said, ‘OK, I’m good.’ And then we did the check reveal later that week at Allied. I…
