Thumbs up to Nanticoke Creek watershed project

$17.5M in grant money awarded to Earth Conservancy for work

By coincidence, two months ago to this day we published an editorial praising the restoration of Espy Run, bringing the lost creek back to the surface 70 or so years after it had been diverted to make way for strip mining. As noted then, it was a Herculean task that took more than 20 years from completion of a study identifying water quality problems caused by the diversion. To quote that editorial:

“That’s some 50 years ignoring the problem, 15 years figuring out what to do and how to pay for it, and nearly seven years to get it done. So, yeah, it’s worth understanding just how big an achievement this is, even if the sight of a little creek and some riparian forest for protection isn’t exactly the Grand Canyon, or even the Lehigh Gorge.”

The Earth Conservancy got the lion’s share of credit for this truly monumental restoration, and Tuesday’s paper included some good news from the organization about another, similar (and similarly important) project. President/CEO Terry Ostrowski announced Monday that the Conservancy has been awarded more than $17.5 million in grant money for restoration of the upper sections of the Nanticoke Creek watershed.

“This grant will ensure Earth Conservancy can accomplish our goal of reconnecting the Nanticoke Creek headwaters to allow flow to once again reach the downstream areas of the watershed, while eliminating a major source of water to the underground mine pools which resurfaces as Acid Mine Drainage in the lower reaches of Nanticoke Creek,” Ostrowski said. “The grant highlights the partnerships and support we have had with federal and state agencies, as well as…

DIsney’s Pocahontas: The true story of an indigenous woman buried in Gravesend in the UK

Pocahontas (Credit: Disney)

Disney’s Pocahontas was based on true story of the daughter of Powhatan, the paramount chief of the Powhatan Confederacy, a group of Algonquian-speaking tribes in Virginia. (Disney)

Disney‘s animated classic Pocahontas captivated audiences with its stunning visuals and memorable music when it was released in 1995.

With a budget of $55m, the film — directed by Mike Gabriel and Eric Goldberg — grossed more than $346m worldwide, and was widely praised by critics as another musical hit for the animation studio.

Based on the story a real historical figure who played a pivotal role in early US history — Disney’s Pocahontas was voiced by Irene Bedard, while her singing voice was provided by singer Judy Kuhn.

Her real-life counterpart’s life was marked by her desire to fight for her people’s rights, her acceptance of Christianity, and a new life that saw her adopt a new Anglicised name and start a family.

Here we take a look at who the real Pocahontas was, a story of heartbreak and resilience.

Pocahontas was born in 1596 in the Tidewater region of present-day Virginia and was originally named Amonute but also known as Matoaka, meaning ‘lower between two streams’.

She was the daughter of Powhatan, the paramount chief of the Powhatan Confederacy, a group of Algonquian-speaking tribes in Virginia.

Her nickname, Pocahontas, meant”playful one” or “mischievous one”.

In 1607, English settlers established Jamestown, Virginia, which is when Pocahontas first came into contact with them.

Doylestown is introducing a groundbreaking addition to mental health services with the Innovative Crisis Stabilization Center.

Doylestown is introducing a groundbreaking addition to mental health services in The Keystone State with the Innovative Crisis Stabilization Center, writes Wenjing Ding for Bucks County Courier Times.

Construction for the facility is set for 2024 and will be the first of its kind in Pennsylvania. It will serve 7,000 patients annually. The center would provide 24-hour observation and serve people with a variety of needs, including mental health, drug and alcohol use, intellectual disabilities, physical health, and more.

The patient gets treatment as soon as they enter the calming space. There will be separate lobbies and rooms for children and adults, as well as accommodation for visiting families. Those in need of more acute services such as inpatient facilities and long-term drug and alcohol treatment can also get referrals for treatment.

The facility is in collaboration with the Lenape Valley Foundation, Doylestown Health, Bucks County Department of Behavioral Health/Developmental Programs, and the Bucks County Drug & Alcohol Commission.

The center will be located next to the Lenape Valley Foundation building. It will also feature 24/7 crisis telephones, mobile crisis services, 23-hour stabilization units, and withdrawal management.
