CT restaurant has new menu, cocktails and sports fans. ‘Best place of its kind on the East Coast,’ guests say

Kenny Mollicone can bet on sports and horse races from home or at work on a cell phone app, but there’s no place he would rather be for that activity than Mohegan Sun FanDuel Sportsbook.

It beats like facilities, even those in Las Vegas, Mollicone and other fans say.

“Everything is easy, comfortable. There’s not a bad seat in the house,” Mollicone said. “I go there because you get to see the guys you know.”

Mollicone, who said he bets on games, “but I love the horses,” considers the food to be “great” at the sportsbook and he loves that at Mohegan there are so many other restaurants as well, and if it gets too late the hotel is right there.

“It’s like going on a vacation,” he said.

Mohegan Sun FanDuel Sportsbook, which opened in September 2021, is home to the largest video wall on the east coast — 140 feet — and more than 225 seats for viewing all the big games across all the major sports. The venue stretches 11,000 square-feet, features a mezzanine level that will be enhanced in the coming months and has 39 betting kiosks available 24/7.

General Manager Brad Bryant said everything is geared to guest experience.

That includes the food and a recently expanded menu.

For the betting there are various ways to do it for beginners and the most experienced, with lots of servers to help. Guests don’t even have to move from their chair.

“We want to create the ultimate guest experience, So we do everything,” Bryant said.

Sports betting has officially started in Connecticut as Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods celebrate opening of long-awaited casino parlors

Wagering on sports used to be about the point spread, but these days a person can…

Nanticoke rolls over Redeemer | Times Leader

WILKES-BARRE TWP. — 235 yards and four touchdowns is a great full-game statline for most running backs in the Wyoming Valley Conference.

For Nanticoke Area’s Zack Fox, that was just one quarter.

Fox scored on his first two touches, Nanticoke’s first two plays from scrimmage, as the Trojans smashed Holy Redeemer 54-0 at McCarthy Stadium.

The senior workhorse halfback got an early breather in the second quarter, but not before slashing and gashing his way through the beleagured Royals defense.

“He’s been my guy for the last three years,” said Nanticoke Area head coach Ron Bruza after the win, the Trojans’ fourth in a row. “Zack’s a great modest kid, and he’s a great running back.”

On Nanticoke’s first play of the game, Fox got the pitch and bounced it outside for a 56-yard score. On Nanticoke’s second play following a quick three-and-out, in what looked like the same play call, Fox ran through a tackler or two and scored from 36 yards out.

He would add two more before the quarter was through, with a 21-yard scoop-and-score from Treston Allen added in to a 35-0 Trojans lead at the end of the first.

Fox got so many early opportunities in large part because the Nanticoke defense proved immovable through the night, with Holy Redeemer finishing the game with negative yardage and Royals quarterback Thomas Dugan forced to run for his life, getting dropped multiple times way behind the line of scrimmage.

On a very rainy, very cold night, Bruza was able to get Fox out of the game early to keep him healthy and rested for the rest of the season.

“Whenever you could get one of your guys a rest, it’s a huge advantage moving down the stretch,” Bruza said.

Pencils Down continues road to success

Climbing up the ladder of success for her third straight start, Pencils Down (Royalty For Life) was able to easily handle a field of six rivals in capturing the $17,000 feature trot at Pocono Downs Saturday (Oct. 14) afternoon.

Competing over a sloppy, rain-soaked track with a two-second allowance by the Judges in the 8th race main event, it was a battle for control of the lead from the start.

Chake (Braxten Boyd) was first on the lead off the starting gate but was challenged immediately by the opening quarter mile by Ap Hall Of Trix (John Kakaley), followed second-over by Pencils Downs and driver George Napolitano, Jr.

Ap Hall Of Trix cleared to the lead after a :28.2 first quarter and then Pencils Down passed her by to take command before the half mile marker in :57.4. Going to the half mile, Chake came first-over to challenge, but broke stride at the three-quarters in 1:27.2.

From there Pencils Downs held the field at bay and went on to win by two and one-quarter lengths in 1:56.4. Ap Hall Of Trix was second with Slave Labour (Marcus Miller) third.

PENCILS DOWNS REPLAY

It was the third straight win and fifth victory of the season for Pencils Downs. The four-year-old mare is trained by Jeff Cullipher for Pollack Racing, LLC of Venetia, PA and she paid $2.40 to win as the wagering favorite.

How one Detroit community plans to change its neighborhood with ShotStoppers funding

(CBS DETROIT) – The city of Detroit’s ShotStoppers program gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to several organizations in the city with the goal of reducing crime in their neighborhood.

We caught up with one of the groups that is benefiting from the funds to talk about their plans for their community.

Our Ray Strickland went to Detroit’s east side and spent the day with the president of the Mohican Regent Association, who spoke about the work they’re doing to help make their community better.

“When I first moved into this neighborhood, neighbors were working with one another, neighbors communicated with one another,” said George Preston.

It’s like taking a trip down memory lane for George Preston.

As we drove around the Mohican Regent Neighborhood, Preston was reminded of how much his community has changed.

“We lost that community spirit,” he said.

Mohican Regent is home to one of the deadliest areas by zip code in Detroit: 48205. Preston describes the area as one filled with hard-working families who simply want to see their community thrive.

But he admits crime, specifically gang activity, can take a toll on any community’s spirit.

“Older people began to move out of the neighborhood because of some crimes in the neighborhood. The perception of crimes in the neighborhood,” Preston said.

Resilient is another way Preston would describe the Mohican Regent.

He and members of the community are determined to be a part of the change they want to see. His neighborhood group has taken money out of their own pockets to uplift the community in many ways.

And now, because of Detroit’s ShotStoppers program, they can give back even more.

“It’s going to be adult education here. We are going to do tutoring, the DIY types of things, we are going to have an expert in various fields carpentry, plumbing, and we are going to…
