‘We are still here’: Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrated

Great Barrington — The Alliance for a Viable Future held its annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrations on Friday, October 6, at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, and Monday, October 9, at Giggle Park. The holiday honors Native American peoples and their cultures and takes place on the second Monday in October, on the Columbus Day federal holiday.

Great Barrington adopted the holiday in 2019, while President Joseph Biden issued a presidential proclamation commemorating the holiday in 2021. However, Massachusetts does not officially recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day, despite bills being introduced for the past three years in the state’s legislature. The latest bill was introduced in February and a public hearing was held on the bill by a joint committee of the State House and Senate in late September.

“To me, these events are all about unity, healing, and people coming together,” Shawn Stevens, a member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians told The Berkshire Edge. Stevens has participated in several of the Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrations organized by The Alliance for a Viable Future. “This is a reminder to all of our people, not just people who are Native American, that we all have indigenous roots and we have to have that mindset to protect Mother Earth and make a better place for the next generations and beyond,” Stevens said. “What do I think people can learn from Indigenous Peoples’ Day? I think they should learn that my people, the Mohican people, are still here. We are all still alive. Being indigenous is more of a mindset. We all come from indigenous cultures that…

Football Game Preview: Lenape Valley Patriots vs. Sussex County Tech

The Lenape Valley Patriots will head out on the road to face off against the Sussex County Tech at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in New Jersey (Lenape Valley is ranked 175th, while Sussex County Tech is ranked 171st).

The third road contest was the charm for Lenape Valley, as they earned their first road win of the season. They came out on top against Wallkill Valley by a score of 23-14 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Sussex County Tech had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 28.3 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They didn’t even let Kittatinny Regional onto the board and left with a 14-0 win.

Sussex County Tech got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Brian Gruber out in front who rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 7.3 yards per carry. Gruber is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he’s now rushed for 100 or more in the last three games he’s played. Andrew Baker also helped out as he racked up 102 rushing yards.

The team’s defense also helped out by holding Kittatinny Regional to a paltry 249 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Sussex County Tech’s ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out four times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Gavin Mericle and his two sacks.

Their wins bumped Lenape…

Nanticoke Blue Catfish Keep Getting Bigger: 2nd State Record in a Month

The invasive blue catfish population has been growing on Chesapeake Bay tributaries in recent years, but apparently the fish themselves have also been growing—a lot.

Up the Nanticoke River into Delaware, two state records have been set in less than a month. On Sept. 2, Bridgeville, Delaware angler Chris Andrews caught a a 48-pound, 7.2-ounce blue cat using cut bait while fishing at night with his friends. His fish was certified at Taylored Tackle Shop in Seaford and oncfirmed by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Andrews got to enjoy his title as blue catfish state record holder for only 20 days before his record was broken by angler Sydney McBroom, also from Bridgeville. His fish came in at 53 pounds, making it not just the largest blue catfish caught in Delaware, but also likely the largest freshwater fish ever caught since DNREC started keeping recreational fishing records.

McBroom landed his 53-pounder mid-morning on Sept. 22, also on the Nanticoke. He used a whole bluegill as bait. It was a 20-minute wrestling match to bring the fish in once he hooked it.

“You use a big fish to catch a big fish,” McBroom said. “I don’t fish for attention, I fish for fun, I fish for me. You have to go onto the water and put your time in. We’d see a mess of nice catfish (every time we went out). That was just our day.”

McBroom’s blue catfish catch shattered Andrews’ state record caught Sept. 2 by more than 4.5 pounds. Andrews’ record broke a 2022 record-setting fish, but only by 4 ounces. McBroom’s fish was weighed and certified at Lewes Harbour Marina in Lewes, Delaware.

The state sponsors the year-round Delaware…

Native American Studies host observance and fall forum

The Native American Studies Program at Eberly College of Arts and Sciences hosted the Peace Tree Ceremony Monday, along with and a forum that started Monday and continues today with Native leaders.

The events highlight Native Nations’ ancestral, cultural and historical connections to the land now known as West Virginia.

The Native American Studies Program at Eberly College of Arts and Sciences will host events on October 9 and 10 that will highlight Native Nations’ ancestral, cultural and historical connections to the land now known as West Virginia.

The annual Peace Tree Ceremony was held in recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day. WVU’s Peace Tree is between Martin and E. Moore halls on WVU’s downtown campus.

The Peace Tree, per Haudenosaunee (Iroquoian) oral history passed down for hundreds of years, centers on the Creator sending the Peacemaker to unite the warring Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida and Mohawk nations. He planted the original white pine Tree of Peace at Onondaga to symbolize these Five Nations forming the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. With the addition of the Tuscarora, it is now the Six Nations.

WVU’s first peace tree was planted on campus in 1992 by Chief Leon Shenandoah, Tadodaho of the Grand Council of the Haudenosaunee Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy. This year, Tadodaho Sidney Hill presided. Other guests of honor included Haudenosaunee Faithkeeper Oren Lyons, Delaware Nation President Deborah Dotson, Delaware Tribe of Indians Chief Brad KillsCrow, Shawnee Tribe Chief Ben Barnes, Eastern Shawnee Tribe Chief Glenna Wallace and Cherokee Nation history and preservation officer Catherine Foreman Gray.

The Peace Tree Ceremony included traditional Native music by singer John Block (Seneca Nation) and flute player Boe Nakakakena Harris (Turtle Mountain Chippewa). Wendy Perrone, executive director of Three Rivers Avian Center in Hinton, presented Regis, a bald eagle, symbolizing the eagle sentry the Peacemaker placed atop…

Herberg Middle schoolers work to acknowledge the land and history of the Stockbridge-Munsee people

PITTSFIELD — Captured in a new bronze plaque at the Herberg Middle School by the school auditorium is an acknowledgement of those who came before.

The plaque, which was presented to students on Thursday doesn’t recognize former students or teachers or staff — it goes back much further. The plaque is a land acknowledgement recognizing the forced removal of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans from their ancestral lands in Berkshire County and beyond.

For the last two years, eighth grade students who were part of the changemaker club at the middle school — an after-school group focused on the environment, government and social needs — worked alongside eighth grade social studies teachers Jen Jaehnig and Jen Towler to learn more about the tribe.

The teachers attended a workshop hosted by Heather Bruegl, a first-line descendent Stockbridge-Munsee and citizen of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and the director of cultural affairs for the Stockbridge-Munsee Community in 2021. Towler and Jaehnig said after the workshop they started thinking about how they could present what they’d learned to their students.

“I think really that’s kind of where the changemaker club came from,” Towler said. “We thought that [the tribal history] was a great local topic that we didn’t know anything [about] and definitely our kids didn’t.”

The Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans is reclaiming 351 acres of sacred homeland in Stockbridge

The Mohican peoples lived in southwest Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New Jersey when European settlers first came to the region in the 1600s. During the 1700s and early 1800s, those settlers pushed the Mohican Nation ever westward from their ancestral lands. In 1856 the tribe signed a treaty with the United States government that established the reservation in Wisconsin where the…
