Goaltender Joel Blomqvist made 25 saves on 28 shots for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 3-2 home loss to the rival Hershey Bears at Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.

The result dropped Blomqvist’s record to 13-6-3 while forwards Vinnie Hinostroza and Radim Zohorna each scored goals for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (23-15-5-0). Forward Sam Poulin had a potential game-tying goal waved off with 5.9 seconds left when officials ruled he knocked in an airborne puck with a high stick.

Highlights:

The Penguins’ next game is a home contest against the Toronto Marlies on Wednesday, 7:05 p.m.

Forwards Dillon Hamaliuk and Lukas Svejkovsky each scored two goals for the Wheeling Nailers, who pounded the Reading Royals, 8-2, at Santander Arena in Reading.

The Nailers extended a winning streak to a season-best five games and reached the eight-goal mark for the second consecutive game following an 8-4 road win against the Royals on Friday.

Defenseman Thimo Nickl had a goal and an assist for Wheeling (21-16-1-1) while forwards Cédric Desruisseaux and Tanner Laderoute each contributed two assists.

Goaltender Jaxon Castor made 27 saves on 29 shots and boosted his record to 4-1-0.

Highlights:

The Nailers’ next game is a road contest against the Cincinnati Cyclones on Wednesday, 7:35 p.m.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – In a game that had a playoff-like atmosphere from start to nail-biting finish, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins dropped a heartbreaker to the Hershey Bears, 3-2, on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (23-15-5-0) had a tying goal disallowed with 5.9 seconds remaining in regulation, stunning a packed house and halting the Penguins’ three-game winning streak.

Radim Zohorna wasted no time giving the Penguins a head start, burying a breakaway just 70 seconds into the game. Zohorna, skating through center ice, corralled a loose puck, quickly gathered speed and beat Clay Stevenson upstairs for his first AHL goal of the season.

The Bears had a swift answer, as Ethen Frank got a friendly bounce off the crossbar, beating Joel Blomqvist 6:25 into the game.

The teams traded power-play goals during the middle frame, leading to a 2-2 tie. It began with a marker from Hershey’s Pierrick Dubé 6:24 into the period, followed by a short-side snipe by Vinnie Hinostroza when 81 seconds were left before the second intermission.

Frank struck again for what proved to be the game-winner at 11:29 of the final period.

In a last-ditch effort to tie things up again, the Penguins pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, leading to a six-on-four man advantage. After several attempts were fought off by Stevenson, Sam Poulin batted the puck out of midair and across the goal line for an apparent equalizer. The play was initially called a good goal by the referee watching from below the goal line, but after a huddle between all four on-ice officials, the call was reversed due to a high stick.

The reversal spurned Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s hopes of winning the game in overtime and denied it a chance to earn a point in the standings by…

The statue depicting a likeness of Chief Tamanend, the Lenape leader who signed a peace treaty with William Penn, is pedestaled at a gaping I-95 entrance ramp in the Old City neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Motorists zip by the statue at Front and Market Streets without a glance as they cruise out of town. Pedestrians risk oncomingtraffic just to get a glimpse of the bronze figure.

But a proposal to move the statue to a place of prominence to a new Tamanend Square being planned as part of a revamp of Market Street in Old City appears stalled as at least one federally designated tribe objects.

The objection by the tribe takes on new relevance in light of the recent dustup involving now-scrapped plans to move the statue of William Penn from Welcome Park, which is located a few blocks away and part of Independence National Historical Park. The National Park Service is proposing to rehabilitate Welcome Park and include Native American history.

‘Tired of moving’

“After 300-plus years of forced removal, it just seems as if it’s just another metaphoric forced removal from an area of our own land,” said Jeremy Johnson, cultural education director of the federally recognizedDelaware Tribe of Indians in Bartlesville, Okla.

The tribe viewed treaties and land sales that the Lenape signed with European colonists more like leases, unaware that land was something to be bought or sold. Eventually, the Lenape had no land left and moved west, eventually settling in Oklahoma.

“We’re tired of moving,” Johnson said. “We’ve been told multiple times in our history that we’re in the way of progress.”

STOCKBRIDGE — In order to forge closer ties with descendants of the town’s original settlers, the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans, town leaders have approved a proposal to appoint a six-member commission to work with the Tribal Council based in Bowler, Wis.

Select Board member Patrick White presented the plan to the board last week to create projects such as student exchanges and a wide range of other collaborations.

He pointed out that the town will need to seek “formal buy-in” from the Mohican leaders to formalize a closer relationship. The proposed Stockbridge Mohican Commission is expected to be on the agenda of the tribal council’s next regular meeting on Feb. 13, said Sherry White, the Mohican’s liaison with Stockbridge, in a phone interview Tuesday.

“The contemporary community of Stockbridge wholeheartedly embraces the reunification of the Mohican tribe with its ancestral home,” White wrote in a document detailing his proposal.

He cited the tribe’s acquisition last August of Fenn Farm, 351 acres of woodlands on the north side of Monument Mountain, as “a bold start to a new era, and the opportunity to foster closer ties. We will endeavor to learn lessons from our ancestors, while approaching reconciliation with the advantage of a contemporary view of the past. We know our work has just begun.”

The Fenn Farm land was purchased by the Mohicans through a $2.26 million state grant. The tribe plans to maintain the land as is, according to Shannon Holsey, the tribe’s president.

According to White’s proposal, the Stockbridge Munsee Commission would include three local residents appointed by the Select Board and three Mohicans selected by the Tribal Council.

The board voted unanimously to approve the creation of the commission, pending an agreement with the council.

CAMBRIDGE, MD – Linda Harris, the Executive Director of the Harriet Tubman Museum and Education Center, may have a crucial link to the 19th century as she holds a recently discovered artifact believed to be a shackle worn by a slave child.

The significant find was presented to the museum by a resident of Wicomico County, who found it while magnet fishing in a creek that feeds into the Nanticoke River. According to Harris, “This was brought to us yesterday [Thursday] by a person who lives in Wicomico County near the Nanticoke River, and he is a magnet fisher.”

Upon closer examination, Harris drew parallels between the artifact and images of shackles worn by children in the 19th century, particularly around 1840 and 1850. “I pulled up images of shackles of children during that period of the 19th century around 1840, 1850, and this resembles those shackles,” said Harris.

The discovery has sparked numerous questions and speculations for Harris. “Of course, stories were swirling around in my head. Could this have been a shackle that was taken off, and the child was fleeing with his family or parents? Or could he have been thrown in the water and died? I don’t know. It’s all speculation, but it’s just a reminder of what happened here,” she reflected.

The artifact, believed to have been submerged for more than 150 years, is being carefully preserved. Harris mentioned that they are keeping it wrapped in moist paper towels to prevent oxidation. The museum plans to consult with an archaeologist soon to delve deeper into the historical significance of the finding.

The Harriet Tubman Museum and Education Center in Cambridge aims to have the artifact on public display by early February, offering visitors a tangible connection to the 19th-century struggles of enslaved individuals.
