Connecticut Casinos Navigate Revenue Decline with iGaming Shift

The fiscal ledger of Connecticut’s tribal fiefdoms of fortune, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods, have reported a downturn in their casino gaming revenues. The two gaming behemoths witnessed a diminishing EBITDA in their 2023 financial year, concluding on September 30th. Despite the stumble in brick-and-mortar proceeds, these storied establishments have wrestled with the digital age, channeling efforts into their iGaming platforms to recoup the losses.

In their first year of unfurling online gaming amidst the sanctioned digital landscape in Connecticut, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods experienced a noticeable dip in on-site patronage. Mohegan Sun earmarked a gross gaming revenue sum of $598.96 million, marking a decrement of 5.15% from the prior year. Similarly, Foxwoods reported a year-on-year decline of 1.2%, with a total retail gaming revenue of $515.54 million.

While the gaming revenue streams experienced these declines, the resorts managed to buoy their financial ship with earning boosts across other amenities. At Mohegan Sun, the thriving offerings of victuals and libations tallied nearly an 8% surge in sales, cresting at – $97.7 million. The revenue from lodging inched up close to 1% to $95 million, with income from their retail and entertainment sectors soaring by almost 4% to $128.4 million. Despite these gains, Mohegan Sun’s total net revenue, a figure encompassing all services and amenities, still fell slightly short of the previous year’s mark by about $20 million.

Mohegan Sun is a vast sprawl, encompassing 310,000 square feet furnished with 3,495 slots, 245 table games, and its revered FanDuel Sportsbook. The Sun also boasts an extensive assemblage of 84 food, beverage, and retail concessions, capped with a grand concert hall seating 10,000 and 1,562 hotel rooms to cradle the weary gambler in luxurious repose. However, even with such grandeur, the fiscal year’s EBITDA for Mohegan Sun,…

Lodge at Mohican State Park to close in February for upgrades, repairs

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The popular lodge at Mohican State Park turns 50 years old this spring, and the state is gifting the aging structure – and those who love it — a major birthday present.

The lodge will close next week for several months, part of a $12 million capital improvement project that includes elevator repairs, heating, air conditioning and electrical upgrades and more.

The inn, about 75 miles southwest of Cleveland, is a centerpiece of Mohican State Park, with 1,100 acres in southern Ashland County. It features 96 rooms in the woods above Pleasant Hill Lake.

It’s one of 10 state park lodges in Ohio.

The lodge will close February 1, with a goal to reopen it in early May, said Andy Chow, media and outreach specialist with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Closing the lodge will make it easier to complete the extensive work, said Chow, which also includes new windows, a new generator and repairs to the building envelop. Repairs to both the indoor and outdoor pools, and the addition of a splash pad play area, are also planned.

Last fall, the state completed $4 million of interior work to the building, including guestroom upgrades that feature new furnishings, carpeting, window treatments, painting and bathroom upgrades.

The improvements to Mohican are part of a larger investment in state park lodges and cabins in recent years by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Other projects undertaken since 2019 include work at lodges Deer Creek State Park, Burr Oak, Hueston Woods, Punderson, Salt Fork and Shawnee.

The lodge at Mohican debuted in April 1974, and was the state’s sixth overnight park lodge. The first to open was Punderson Manor, inside a historic Tudor mansion in Geauga County, now the centerpiece of Punderson State Park near Burton.

The most recent state park lodge to open in Ohio is in…

Police investigating murder-suicide in Nanticoke

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE CO. (WOLF) — A community is reeling after a shocking murder-suicide in Nanticoke

Both people have now been identified and authorities are continuing to investigate.

According to a search warrant, at around 8:26 p.m. Monday, Nanticoke police were called to 389 East Union Street for two shooting victims.

Upon arrival, officers found a 23-year-old female, 21-year-old male, and an 11-year-old juvenile female.

Investigators observed a male at the top of the stairs with a gunshot wound to the head, and a black pistol laying on his body. He was later identified as Scott Richards.

Richards was taken to the hospital for emergency medical treatment. He was intubated and put on life support, but died Tuesday at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center according to the coroner.

In the middle bedroom, officers came upon a female with a gunshot wound to the head with no pulse, identified as Carrie Boneforte.

Police say a hole was observed near Richards, a firearm, spent shell casing, and a live round of ammunition at the top of the stairs.

The coroner’s office ruled Boneforte’s death as a homicide, while Richards’ death is ruled a suicide.

FOX56 spoke to a neighbor who came outside to see what was happening.

“My ring camera picked up the sirens and all of that on the street. I went outside and saw a lot of people standing outside. I overheard they had a lot of domestic violence situations and a lot of different family problems at home,”

“They also have an 11-year-old daughter, that’s also a big sink in my heart because I have three kids,”

Nanticoke Police Chief Michael Roke says that it was a “domestic/isolated incident that had escalated to that point.” There is no danger to the public.

Neighbors here are devastated by the news, and are saddened for the children who they say are living in the…

Tony Orlando Sets Farewell Tour

Tony Orlando is hanging up his mic — but not before a final lap of North American shows.

Announced Monday (Jan. 15), Orlando’s Farewell Concerts kick off with dates across three consecutive nights at South Point Casino in Las Vegas, Jan. 19-21; followed by shows at Niagara Falls, ON; Des Plaines and St. Charles, IL; Atlantic City, NJ; and Uncasville, CT. His final performance in Vegas should be an emotional one, wrapping 51 years as a headliner on the Strip.

“I still hit the ball, I just can’t run the bases!!!” Orlando, 79, tells Billboard about ending this touring career, adding that the cost of travel and his age were contributing factors. “It’s also time for me to satisfy my creative juices with the need in me to produce, create new products from films, to Broadway shows, to streaming new product.”

Orlando says he plans to launch new companies Tony Orlando Productions and Explosive Films and Entertainment. He will also “pay more attention to writing a Broadway show and pitching my ideas for films and writing my next book.”

“Performing live shows for 63 years has been a glorious dream come true run!” he says. “And, man oh man, I will miss the audiences, friends and fans who have stuck by me for these last 63 incredible years. But now it’s time to grow and turn a new page in my life. How exciting!”

As it stands, Orlando will call time on his 63-year concerts career on March 22 at Mohegan Sun’s 10,000-seat arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Lenape Storytelling set for D&R Greenway’s Discovery Center at Point Breeze

The public is invited to enjoy an afternoon of storytelling in the tradition of the Lenape, the First People, at D&R Greenway’s Discovery Center at Point Breeze from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28.

Located at 101 E. Park St., Bordentown, N.J., the Discovery Center was created by D&R Greenway Land Trust in a renovated historic home that belonged to the exiled King of Spain Joseph Napoleon Bonaparte’s gardener in the early 1800s. The house will be open with exhibits about the history, land and people of Point Breeze, including the Lenape and Bonaparte, birds and the Delaware River watershed. Visitors can learn about the Three Sisters garden, indigenous and heritage crops that are grown in the Historic Garden at Point Breeze.

“Wintertime is when indigenous peoples gather to tell stories,” said Barbara Michalski, known as Chief Bluejay. Of Lenape descent, she is Chief, Keeper of Culture, Storyteller and Public Speaker for the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania. She is a talented storyteller who shares the traditions of the Lenape to remind people that “we are still here.”

Bluejay provided advice to D&R Greenway in development of the Peoples Room inside the Discovery Center at Point Breeze. There, visitors will learn about Lenape language and read stories about land and water stewardship. Chief Bluejay’s intention is “to stress how we should take care of Mother Earth.”

A landmark positioned in front of the Historic Garden at the Discovery Center at Point Breeze is a life-size sculpture of an Atlantic Sturgeon. These huge creatures, that can grow up to 14 feet in length, were once abundant in the Delaware River but were taken to the brink of extinction due to loss of habitat. They depend on clean water to spawn in the Delaware River.

“The Villain” Vendetti looks to steal the show at CES Boxing’s Winter Brawl 2024

UNCASVILLE, CT – On Saturday, February 3rd, Greg “The Villain” Vendetti challenges Chordale “The Gift” Booker for his WBC USA Super Welterweight title at Mohegan Sun Arena.

It’s the perfect opportunity for the Stoneham, Massachusetts native to win a title, break into the WBC rankings and secure a more lucrative payday.

“My whole career, I’ve taken it one day at a time,” says Vendetti, reluctant to look too far passed his opponent.  “I focus on what’s in front of me and it’s worked out well so far.  But if I were to beat Booker and blast him out of there, I’m sure we’ll get a call for a big money fight.”

Despite Chordale Booker being on a four-fight winning streak, Vendetti likes his chances of upsetting the apple cart. In Booker, ‘The Villain’ sees a fair-weather fighter who does not deal well with adversity.

“From what I’ve seen of him, he seems to have a small gas tank and a brittle spirit,” says Vendetti. “When a fight’s going well, he looks good and feels good.  When the fight’s going bad, he starts to fall apart.”

The National Guardsman believes that pressure is the key to victory against Booker, which is ideal for him as a volume puncher.

“I’m a pressure guy,” says Vendetti of his style.  “I have a big gas tank and big punch output.  I just have to be the best version of myself to get the win.  In the mid-to-late rounds, Booker starts to wilt against guys who put on half as much pressure as I’m gonna put on him.”

If Vendetti sounds confident, it’s because he’s been on the big stage before.  ‘The Villain’ has wins over the likes of Japanese contender Yoshihiro Kamegai in 2018 and a competitive loss to two-division world champion Erislandy Lara in 2020.  Each experience has proven to Vendetti that he can hold his own against some of the best fighters in the world.

Vendetti isn’t sure…
