Sharing sweets from Sanitary Bakery in Nanticoke on Fat Tuesday

Overnight snow didn’t stop folks in Luzerne County from getting Mardi Gras goodies.

NANTICOKE, Pa. — It was a messy morning that called for a cleanup on the streets of Nanticoke. But the overnight snow wasn’t going to stop people from coming to Sanitary Bakery on East Ridge Street, no matter the amount.

“There was eight inches of snow up there, and thankfully my son-in-law got some of it this morning,” said Bernard Witkawski of Glen Lyon.

“Doesn’t stop me, type of job I have. You know, I just got done shoveling and came here for a little snack going to go on my merry way now,” said Michael Nice of Nanticoke.

“I came for the fastnacht and the paczki before they go and you have to fast after that,” explained Theodore Wiaterowski of Nanticoke.

Some have a long-standing relationship with this traditional pastry.

“I like both the prune and the raspberries, so I took a little of each,” said Wiaterowski.

Others are new to its coveted goodness.

“I grew up down in South Carolina and we never knew about paczki,” said Victoria Kingeter, who began working at the bakery in October.

Something many had in common was that their purchases on Fat Tuesday were for sharing—some with coworkers and health care workers.

“Yeah, well, we’ll see. If I don’t eat them on the way there,” said Nice.

“Got to get it up there to the Geisinger Heart Hospital,” said Witkawski.

“I am taking a dozen of each to the bank who I deal with, then I will share with my cousins,” said Wiaterowski. “Maybe I’ll get a discount on my loan or something.”

Customers say something this good shouldn’t be kept a secret.

Diamonds to Nanticoke church’s lively Ukrainian celebration

Diamonds to Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Nanticoke for not only honoring their Myasopusna celebration through a dinner of Ukrainian dishes, but also by bringing a lively and impressive dancing troupe decked in colorful folk costumes. The limited seating venue of the church’s community hall was understandably sold out, and the crowd got to watch the Kazka Ukrainian Folk Ensemble Dancers and a younger but equally talented group known as St. Mary’s Traditional Ukrainian Dancers. From the opening promenade of young ladies proffering a loaf of golden brown bread to the everybody-dance finale of the Hopak (the Ukrainian national dance), they alternated between elegant and athletic, demonstrating history and folklore, and in general just making the evening memorable. Kudos all around.

Coal to all those who mar Wilkes-Barre (and other municipalities) with what sometimes seems an endless assault of small signs promoting their own little business operations. City Councilman Tony Brooks was right in saying the signage “junks up the city.” The advertisements for things like “Cash for diabetics test strips, sensors and more,” “Record Fair,” and even personal garage sales might not be too grating if they were fewer and far between, but they have become ubiquitous and redundant, and as Brooks also noted, when they are stapled to poles they often leave the staples behind even after being removed. City Attorney Tim Henry was right when he said an ordinance against the signs would be nearly unenforceable, but Brooks suggested another tactic: Contact the sign owners directly to voice your complaint. If the advertising effort backfires, those behind the signs may decide to stop.

Diamonds to the two exercise activities highlighted in Wednesday’s paper: The…

Top 10 casino openings and expansions for February 2024

From the heart of Indiana to the bustling streets of Las Vegas to a picturesque island off the west coast of South Korea, the global gaming industry is filled with new properties, expansions, improvements and renovations. Today, we highlight 10 more developments across the planet since our last edition in December.
