New Clues Bring Search for Indigenous Village of Roanoke to Elizabethan Gardens

Discovering an Algonquian Village’s Connection to the Lost Colony

The story of an English settlement known as the “Lost Colony” of Roanoke and Sir Walter Raleigh’s early explorers remains one of the most fascinating mysteries of American history.

The search for what happened to the English settlers has recently focused on the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo, where researchers uncovered more evidence of a farmstead belonging to the “Algonquian village of Roanoke” (also spelled Roanoac), an Indigenous community that hosted the explorers in 1584.

Excavations in March 2024 followed discoveries in the summer of 2023, when archaeologists from The First Colony Foundation uncovered what they believe are tantalizing clues. They dug up shards of Algonquian pottery dating back to the 1500s, along with a ring of copper wire they believe could have been an earring once worn by a warrior from an Indigenous tribe.

“Finding domestic pottery—the type used for cooking—in close proximity to an apparent piece of Native American jewelry strongly confirms we are digging in the midst of a settlement,” said Dr. Eric Klingelhofer, the First Colony Foundation’s Vice President of Research. “And Roanoac is the only known village at that site.”

“The copper ring indicates contact with the English,” Klingelhofer continued.

The ring was made of drawn copper, and Klingelhofer believes it was brought to America by English explorers as part of their trade goods. Indigenous peoples did not have the technology to produce such rounded strands, and neither the French nor Spanish explorers ventured as far north as Roanoke Island to trade.

The copper ring would have made for a valuable trade item. Historians say copper had spiritual significance for Indigenous tribes.

What does the soil say?

While artifacts were discovered last summer, the objective of the more recent dig was to find evidence of a farmstead…

How George Washington’s Favorite Cocktail Was Inspired by a Quaker Social Club in 1732 Andalusia, Bensalem

Image via The Educated Barfly, Youtube.

A social club formed by a group of Quakers in 1732 in modern-day Andalusia inspired George Washington’s favorite cocktail.

A social club formed by a group of Quakers in 1732 in the modern-day Andalusia neighborhood of Bensalem inspired George Washington’s favorite cocktail, writes Jen Peng for Tasting Table.

On the land leased from the Lenni-Lenape tribe, the group of Quakers established the Colony in Schuylkill, otherwise known as the Fish House. The name spoke for itself, and the club mostly partook in fishing, eating, and drinking.

Their drink of choice was the Fish House Punch, and Washington was reported to enjoy it whenever he visited.

Washington reportedly had so many punches after one visit that he was unable to write in his diary for three days.

While it is undetermined what the original recipe entails, the official website of Mount Vernon, the historic home that belonged to George and Martha Washington, says that it includes Jamaican rum, peach brandy, cognac brandy, lemon juice, sugar, and water.

Read more about Andalusia’s Colony in Schuylkill and its cocktail concoction in Tasting Table.

Game Of Claims Finals held

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Nob Hill High gelding Nob Hill Flash completed a sweep of his Game Of Claims series action for $15,000 base-tagged pacers Monday (March 25) at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania, tacking on a 1:52 harness racing victory in his $20,000 Championship event after winning in each of his preliminaries.

Nob Hill Flash and driver Anthony Napolitano (Curtis Salonick Photo)

Nob Hill Flash, the 50-cent favorite, moved from third from driver Anthony Napolitano nearing the :27.2 quarter, but Play Jet Ray pulled the pocket in front of him and went around early leader Aerosmith Hanover, with Nob Hill Flash refilling his own hole.

Just past the :55.4 half, the “Flash” flashed out uncovered and battled with Play Ray Jet the rest of the way, past a 1:23.3 three-quarters and through the lane until finally gaining the advantage as he won by a neck.

Owner Karen Taylor and trainer Pierre Paradis, who took over the horse after his first prelim win, won the second with him but then lost him to another claim, wound up winning the crucial game of musical claiming chairs last week when reacquiring him, and saw the game pacer garner the lion’s share of the Championship purse.

Despite being claimed every prelim week, Anthony Napolitano, top driver on the day with a quartet of triumphs, guided Nob Hill Flash in all four of his GOC wins.

NOB HILL FLASH REPLAY

The $7500 base-priced pacers went their $15,000 Championship race on Monday as well, and Hashtag Money (Sunshine Beach), who had won his two previous starts but had to overcome the outside post eight, made it look easy with a coast-to-coast win in 1:52.3, a new mark, while returning a big $81.40 mutuel.
