Michener Art Museum celebrates additions to permanent collection

The James A. Michener Art Museum marked its 35th anniversary year with the addition of 62 artworks by 26 artists to its permanent collection, demonstrating its continued commitment to representing the diverse community of artists with ties to the greater Delaware Valley and Bucks County region.

Of the 26 artists collected, 12 are new to the museum’s collection, 12 are women artists, and 6 are artists of color. The works span from the early 1900s to 2020. Diverse in media, the acquisitions encompass sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints, decorative arts, and photography.

“These acquisitions represent a variety of perspectives and generations, reflecting the breadth and depth of artistic expression in the Delaware Valley region,” said Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest Chief Curator Laura Turner Igoe. “We are proud to share these works with our patrons and invite our community to join us in appreciation of the rich cultural heritage of our area.”

The acquisitions, which were completed throughout 2023, include:

Bloodline (2015)a monumental sculpture by Holly Wilson (b. 1968). An enrolled member of the Delaware Nation and descendant of the Delaware Tribe of Indians, Wilson is a multi-media artist whose work narrates both family history and personal experiences. Recently on view in the 2023 exhibition Never Broken: Visualizing Lenape Histories, Bloodline tells a powerful and complicated story of generational loss, survival, and resilience through a series of cast bronze figures representing multiple generations of the artist’s family, traversing a cut locust branch. The acquisition of Bloodline demonstrates the Michener’s commitment to provide a space for perspectives of the Lenape, the Indigenous people of the land on which the museum stands.

Eight paintings by regional women artists donated by Doylestown collector Janet Macrae, including work by Theresa Bernstein (1985-2002), Alice B. Doughton (1880-1969), Jesse Drew-Bear (1877-1962), Mildred Bunting Miller (1892-1964), and Clara Stroud (1890-1984). From Columbus Circle…

Throwback Thursday: The real story of Bowling Green’s name

Throwback Thursday this week takes a deep dive into the history of Bowling Green’s name. While we’ve mentioned Bowling Green Park in New York City a few times over the years, we’ve also played around with the lawn bowling games the city’s founding fathers, the Moore brothers, were known to have played at their home near modern day Downtown.

But this reporter went to New York City in person to get a better look at the original Bowling Green Park herself. This charming little patch of grass, passive seating area and fountain, are but a stone’s throw from the New York Stock Exchange and Fraunces Tavern, where George Washington bid farewell to the Continental Army.

Bowling Green Park is the oldest park in all of New York City. According to the NYC Parks Department, they say this spot was hallowed ground where the Lenape tribe held Native American council meetings. Important tribe matters were often settled here on this sliver of land. Just like Peter Minuit, the Governor of New Amsterdam who settled this area, was noted for conducting the major purchase of buying all of modern Manhattan from the Lenape tribe for the equivalent of just over $1,000 modern day dollars in 1626.

The Dutch colonists used the space for meetings, parades, and cattle markets. It marked the beginning of Heere Staat, or High St., also known as modern day Broadway. Then in 1686, the site became public property when the city put all “vacant, waste, and unappropriated lands” under public domain.

Travelers will notice a plaque on the fence of Bowling Green Park, showing that the park was officially leased in 1733 as a true “bowling green” for a single peppercorn per year. A peppercorn is basically…

Valentin Moldavsky vs. Linton Vassell headlines 2024 PFL 4 at Mohegan Sun

The second half of the PFL’s 2024 season starts in mid-June with heavyweights and women’s flyweights on the card in Connecticut.

For the first time, the promotion will touch town at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. That venue was the East Coast home for Bellator for years before the PFL purchased it this past fall. PFL 2024, Week 4 is set for June 13.

Former Bellator standouts Valentin Moldavsky (13-3) and Linton Vassell (24-9) will meet in the heavyweight main event, the promotion announced Monday. Moldavsky is at the top of the standings after a first-round knockout of Ante Delija earlier this month. Vassell was stopped by Denis Goltsov in the third round.

Because only four fighters make the playoffs and the top four at heavyweight all have 4 pints or more, Vassell will need a finish of Moldavsky if he wants a shot at making the postseason.

In the co-main event, Dakota Ditcheva (11-0) takes on Chelsea Hackett (4-2-1). Ditcheva is one of three fighters with 6 points atop the women’s 125-pound standings after her first-round knockout of Lisa Mauldin in San Antonio. Hackett was submitted by Jena Bishop, so like Vassell finds herself in position to need a stoppage to have a realistic shot at the postseason.

Although there will be four other matchups in each of those divisions, those two matchups are the only ones the promotion announced Monday. The other fights are expected to be announced in the coming days.

After PFL 4 in Connecticut, the promotion heads to Salt Lake City for light heavyweights and lightweights June 21, then Sioux Falls, S.D., for welterweights and featherweights June 28.

“The PFL’s season format is the toughest test in MMA with the addition of elite athletes from Bellator,…

HockeyBuzz.com – Bill Meltzer – Quick Hits: Phantoms, Flyers Daily, Voracek

Quick Hits: April 26, 2024

1) Calder Cup playoffs: The Lehigh Valley Phantoms will look to close out their best-of-three first round playoff series on Friday night as they host Game 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at the PPL Center. Game time is 7:05 p.m. EDT.

This will be the first home playoff game for the Phantoms since the 2018 Eastern Conference Final series against the Toronto Marlies. Last year, due to AHL rules governing flying distance series in the first round, all three games of the Phantoms’ series against the Charlotte Checkers were played at Bojangles Coliseum.

The game will be streamed on AHLTV (subscription required) and available on Phantoms Radio with Bob Rotruck on the call. To purchase tickets, click here.

On Wednesday at Mohican Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, the Phantoms prevailed by a 2-1 score. Adam Brooks and Rhett Gardner scored for the winning team, while defenseman Louie Belpedio collected two assists. Cal Petersen stopped 21 of 22 shots. Ville Koivunen notched the lone WBS goal. Joel Blomqvist denied 30 of 32 Lehigh Valley shots in a losing cause.

The Phantoms were 0-for-3 on the power play. They were 2-for-2 on the power play.

Lehigh Valley dressed 11 forwards and seven defensemen in the series opener. Rookie winger Samu Tuomaala, injured on April 14, is unlikely to be available in this series. The winner of the series will advance to play the AHL-leading Hershey Bears in the best-of-five second round.

2) On today’s edition of Flyers Daily, Jason Myrtetus interviewed Cam Atkinson. He also responds to listener emails. Watch below:

3) Jakub Voracek announced his retirement this week. On PhiladelphiaFlyers.com, I wrote a career retrospective focusing primarily on Voracek’s years with the Flyers: Click here.

Softball Game Recap: Central Columbia Bluejays vs. Wyalusing Valley Rams

Central Columbia was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They wound up on the wrong side of a tough 10-0 walloping at the hands of the Wyalusing Valley Rams. IRHS softball standout McHale commits to Holy Family University

Katie McHale signs with Holy Family-MSter-2654.jpg

IR’s Katie McHale signs her letter of commitment to Holy Family University.

Coastal Point • Mike Stern

She races into the gaps and swiftly charges sinking line drives toward the outfield.

Her swiftness afoot robs rival hitters of base hits and extra base knocks.

In addition to her airtight outfield defense, Indian River High School senior Katie McHale reaches base via walks and singles. Her productivity at the plate has helped her team win five straight games and post a 7-3 won-lost record through games of April 20. McHale has contributed six hits, a half-dozen RBIs and four walks, while striking out on only two occasions.

“She is a very easy-going and coachable athlete, and someone I thoroughly enjoy being around,” said Indians softball assistant coach Lauren Illian. “Katie shows up every day looking to give her best effort in everything that she does. Her infectious energy, love of the game, sliding catches in the outfield and dance moves are among the many things that her teammates and coaches love about her!”

Jillian Murray can relate. The Holy Family University women’s softball head coach invited McHale to perform at the next level, and McHale, who played a huge role in helping to lead the Indians to last year’s DIAA state championship game, has accepted that invitation.

Here is her story of the hard work and success that are taking McHale to the next level.

Katie McHale

Hometown: Roxanna, Del.

School that you are committing to: Holy Family University, a private Roman Catholic school located in Philadelphia, Pa. The Tigers are an NCAA Division II member that competes in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).

Baseball Recap: Kingsway extends home winning streak to eight

Kingsway put another one in the bag on Wednesday to keep their perfect season alive. They put the hurt on the Deptford Spartans with a sharp 18-4 win. Considering Kingsway has won eight contests by more than five runs this season, Wednesday’s blowout was nothing new.

Joey Fanelli looked comfortable as he pitched four innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits.

At the plate, Tommy Popoff was incredible, going 2-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and a double. Another player making a difference was Ian Monteith, who scored three runs while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.

Kingsway’s victory was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-0. As for Deptford, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-7.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Kingsway will take on Lenape at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Kingsway’s pitching crew has only allowed 2.4 runs per game this season, so Lenape’s hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Deptford, they will head out on the road to square off against Haddon Township at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
