He may not quite be the last of the Mohicans, but BBC veteran John Simpson last night took aim at his old school after it scrapped using Native American tribes for its house system.
Dulwich Prep London, a fee-paying all-boys school, feels the long-standing names constitute ‘cultural appropriation’. It says the changes follow concerns raised by some parents.
But critics have denounced the rebranding. Since 1916, pupils at the school – whose alumni also includes actor Hugh Bonneville – have been placed in one of four houses. Mr Simpson, BBC world affairs editor, was in Mohican house.
Another house, Deerfeet, was named in honour of an Indian runner known as Deerfoot. The others, Chippeway and Ojibwas, were named in celebration of the Ojibwa people from the Great Lakes in the US and Canada, also referred to as the Chippewa.
Deerfeet will now be called Lamassu, a mythical creature from Mesopotamia which had a human head and a bull’s body. The other three houses will be Phoenix, Pegasus and Gryphon.

In May, the Rabee Securities Iraq Stock Exchange Index (RSISX Index) decreased by 1.9%, because the Bank of Baghdad, National Bank of Iraq, and Baghdad Soft Drinks, which have the highest weights in the index, recorded a decline in May which might be due to profit-taking following the considerable increase in their share prices in April. In May, the increase in the share prices of Commercial Bank of Iraq, Al-Mansour Bank, and Asiacell partially limited the decline in the RSISX index.
RSISX Total Return (RSISXTR) Index decreased just 0.3% in May with the contribution of the Bank of Baghdad’s IQD0.19 cash dividend per share; corresponding to a 4.6% dividend yield. In May, in addition to the Bank of Baghdad, two more companies decided to distribute dividends as follows; Iraqi Agricultural Products (dividend yield: 0.4%), and Al-Mashreq Al-Arabi Islamic Bank (the dividend yield cannot be calculated because the bank has not traded since its listing on the Iraq Stock Exchange (ISX)).
The total trading volume of the ISX decreased 31% in May compared to April, amounting to USD31.5 million. The banking sector obtained the highest share in trading volume with 79.1%, followed by the telecom sector (7.1% share), hotels & tourism sector (6.7% share), industry sector (4.3% share), agriculture sector (1.7% share), and services sector (1.1% share).
28 companies’ share prices increased in May, 14 of which increased by more than 5.0%, while 8 increased by more than 10.0%. Gulf Commercial Bank increased the most going up by 141.2% during May, followed by Baghdad for Packing Materials with a 33.3% increase.

Football has returned home – was the slogan of the European Championship in 1996, which was organized by England, the cradle of football.
It was in England that UEFA introduced a modified (expanded) version of the continental championship – with four groups of four teams each, as well as a quarter-final match. The Euro is twice as long as the previous one, twice as many games and, some would say, twice as good football.
As 30 years earlier, when they organized the World Cup, the English expected to win a major competition on their territory. But, as the legendary English centre-forward Gary Lineker said a few years earlier, “football is a game of 11 against 11 in which the Germans always win”.
Of course, the Germans won the European Championship with a victory against Croatia in the quarter-finals (2:1), a triumph against England in the semi-finals (on penalties, after 1:1) and Oliver Biroff’s golden goal against the championship sensation Czech Republic in the final (2:1).
Since the Euros in England, an era of modern football has begun where everyone plays like the Germans played ten or 20 years ago – with lots of running and raw power. Thus began the era of industrial football, which the Germans nurtured much earlier than others.
And the “last Mohicans” of real German football were led from the bench by the former “elf” defender Berti Fogst, who is much better known to the public in this area as a player who got lost in Dragan Džajić’s dribbles, than as an impassable right back.
