Iraq officially removed from UN list of countries using children in armed conflict

2024-06-14T18:46:41+00:00

Shafaq News/ On Friday, the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Ahmed Al-Assadi, announced that Iraq has officially been removed from the United Nations list of countries using children in armed conflict.

“The recent report by the UN Secretary-General on countries using children in armed conflict did not include Iraq’s name,” Al-Assadi said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency. “This is due to Iraq’s commitment to the joint action plan we signed with the UN Country Team (UNICEF, UNAMI) to prevent the involvement of children in armed conflict.”

Al-Assadi noted that this step will enhance Iraq’s standing in the international community. He also affirmed that Iraq has complied with all the provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocol of 2008, to which it is a signatory.

The statement said that the Executive Committee of the Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism, headed by Undersecretary of Labor for Social Affairs Huda Sajjad and under the direct supervision of the Minister, worked for less than a year on the implementation of the plan in stages in cooperation with a Qatari team, a team from UNAMI, and several ministries, which included prevention, treatment, and cooperation stages.

Notably, the UN list of countries using children in armed conflict is compiled by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict. The list includes countries where government forces or armed groups have been credibly reported to have recruited or used children in armed conflict, or to have killed or maimed children in violation of international law.

Iraq was added to the list in 2016 due to the use of children by ISIS and other armed groups. The…

Before their back-to-back free shows, Greg Romeyn, Mohegan’s Director of Sports and Entertainment, presented the Mystic, CT-based band with the esteemed honor.

“The Cartells have continued to bring world-class entertainment to Mohegan Sun since their debut,” said Romeyn. “We look forward to having them continue playing on the Wolf Den stage for years to come.”

The seven-piece band accepted their honor before a packed Wolf Den crowd.

“We are humbled and honored to receive this award,” said lead vocalist Karin Tyska. “Our band has played here since 1997. It’s been a great run, and we are thrilled to share this honor with all of our family, friends, and fans.”

The Wolf Den Hall of Fame at Mohegan Sun is a select club that honors a particular class of performers whose exceptional talents and commitment have helped make Mohegan Sun a world-class entertainment destination. The Cartells, a Mystic, CT-based legacy rock band, have brought their versatile repertoire, including rock and roll, jazz, swing, R&B, and Motown, to the concert stage, clubs and high-end events on the East Coast since their formation in April of 1986.

The founders of the band, Bill Holloman, Karin Barth Tyska, Joe Grieco and Gary Stevens, started as a four-piece vocals forward style group. Along the way, the quartet was joined by a…

This hour-long History Alive! Presentation, scheduled for 3 p.m., will include a monologue by the historical character Thomas Ingles, followed by interactive discussions between the audience and the character and then with the presenter.

From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., Wood will portray the story of a Lenape man, explaining and…

Nanticoke Indian Cultural Community Center prepares for expansion, future

MILLSBORO — After about 75 years making a former one-room schoolhouse work as a cultural and community center, Chief Avery Leaving Tracks Johnson is eager for the improvements to the facility along John J. Williams Highway to begin.

There are still some meetings and approvals before shovels hit dirt on the more than 2,800 square foot additions. Still, Chief Johnson maintains a high degree of confidence in the approvals process, since the project has garnered so much support so far.

“I think the community realizes this is something we deserve, and I’m happy about it, and my people are happy about it,” Chief Johnson said, pointing to the hundreds of signatures in support his petition for the project received, and the endorsements of elected officials and public foundations he said he received.

“We have been trying to run multiple programs from one big open space,” he said, which can be challenging due to the nature of some of the programs.

Cultural programs like drum or dance classes compete with educational and outreach programs for space, while certain offerings, like internal ceremonies, require more privacy.

The expansions will address these issues and more, Chief Johnson said.

“We have a lot of elders, so we have to make sure we are prepared. We offer financial literacy and financial independence training, computer training along with other important issues like the domestic violence roundtables and other discussions we have,” he explained.

For events like the 46th annual powwow, scheduled for Sept. 7-8 at Hudson Fields, Chief Johnson said his organization would contract with a commercial kitchen. The new building includes this feature, as well as expanded bathroom facilities and spaces that can be dedicated to certain activities, rather than rotating due to space concerns.

Should everything align the way Chief Johnson believes it will,…

Lenape Pines Service Unit Honors Heros With Heartwarming Tribute to Veterans

Lenape Pines Service Unit Girl Scouts and Leaders Honor Veterans at Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery.Lenape Pines Service Unit Girl Scouts and Leaders Honor Veterans at Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery.

Every once in a while, you come across stories that touch your heart and remind you of the goodness in the world. One such story is the dedication of our Girl Scouts in honoring Veterans. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on an inspiring tradition where Girl Scouts from the Lenape Pines Service Unit place flags on the graves of Veterans three times a year.

In a world that moves way too fast, it’s important to take a step back and remember those who have paved the way for our freedom. These Lenape Pines Girl Scouts do just that by honoring Veterans in their community. The Lenape Pines Service Unit, serving girls in and around Mays Landing, NJ, has embraced this noble tradition. They visit the Atlantic County Veteran’s Cemetery at Estell Manor Park three times a year, placing flags on the graves of those who have served our nation. This act of service is a testament to their commitment to making a positive impact.

Honoring Veterans is not just about paying tribute; it’s about acknowledging the sacrifices made for our freedom. Placing flags on graves teaches Girl Scouts the importance of gratitude. It’s a hands-on way for them to understand and appreciate the freedoms they enjoy today. This tradition fosters a sense of pride and responsibility in these young minds, encouraging them to carry these values throughout their lives.

For many Girl Scouts, participating in these events becomes a cherished memory. It’s a chance to learn about history, hear firsthand Veterans’ accounts, and understand service’s true meaning. These experiences shape their character and inspire them to continue…

This summer, you need cooling; baby, I’m not fooling.

Thus, Perkasie Parks and Recreation to the rescue with music to beat the heat.

Find the tie-dye, slip on the sandals (and for Pete’s sake, get a pedicure!) and get ready to groove all summer in Perkasie Borough to Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, blues, funk, folk, rock, country, and everything in between.

According to the Borough, the free Summer Concert Series will be at the Amphitheater at Lenape Park, with each show running from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Each concert has free parking on site and is open to the public.Lawn chairs and blankets encouraged.

The Amphitheater, according to the borough, was made possible by the generosity of Oldcastle PreCast. It will be the third year for the Amphitheater to host the Summer Concert Series.
