The green transition will make things worse for the Indigenous world

The green transition will deepen entrenched socioeconomic barriers for Indigenous peoples — unless Western forms of science and ongoing settler colonialism are addressed by researchers. That’s according to a new study out this month focused on the use, and abuse, of Indigenous knowledge to solve climate change. Despite disenfranchisement, researchers added, Indigenous nations remain the best stewards of the land.

Focused on environmental oral histories of the Lenape Indian Tribe of Delaware, the study examined how the nation strengthened tribal sovereignty by revitalizing connections to land. This has included re-introducing freshwater mussels into the ecosystem as a way to clean local waterways, and growing ancestral plants for food, medicine, and textiles in urban areas. 

“We as a people, and all the Native people on the East Coast, have been dealing with environmental changes for thousands of years,” said Dennis White Otter Coker, the principal chief of the Lenape Indian Tribe of Delaware, in the report.

Researchers argue that it is impossible to separate the effects of climate change from the history of land dispossession and violence endured by Indigenous peoples, and contend that that legacy continues in Western science practices aimed at finding climate solutions. For example, previous studies have found that organizations like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are biased towards Western sciences over Indigenous knowledge, and their reports “problematically unquestioned,” regardless of the international organization’s own reports finding colonialism to be a key factor in climate change.

“Western Science is really what dominates the way we talk about climate adaptation,” said Lyndsey Naylor, an author on the paper from the University of Delaware. A tragic incident

In New York City, major gambling operators are vying for a lucrative casino license. Tribal organization Mohegan Gaming is one such entity, although a former city executive has argued that a personal tragedy at the tribe’s casino should exclude it from the conversation.

Kamal Bherwani worked as Chief Information Officer for Health and Human Services for former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg. His son, Ethan Bherwani, died at Mohegan Gaming’s Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut on May 18 this year.

The former NYC exec claims his son could have survived the incident had he received immediate help from staff. Instead, a video of the incident, released by the New York Post, shows Ethan falling from his blackjack chair at around 2am. He didn’t receive any medical attention until 11 minutes after his collapse.

The 22-year-old was eventually taken to hospital but was pronounced brain dead and died nine days later. He had fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, and alcohol in his system.

Father blames casino

Bherwani has blamed Mohegan Sun for negligence in relation to his son’s death. “If they had gotten to him in three minutes, he’d be completely alive,” he told the Post. “My son was going to law school. He was cooped up during the pandemic and celebrating his graduation; he made a mistake… but it should not have cost him his life.”

Inaugural event at “The Spine” in Perkasie to celebrate skate culture

Perkasie Borough’s Lenape Park Skate Park reopened July 18, as “The Spine.”

Newly renovated, “The Spine” now boasts a brand new single coping, double mini half-pipe and a freshly milled and paved asphalt pad, designed to challenge and excite skaters of all skill levels.

The inaugural event to promote awareness of the park’s return to the community will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, July 26. This “Last Friday Skate Night” event promises to be a celebration of the revitalized space and the skate enthusiasts that use it.

The Last Friday Skate Nights program begins each July and continues through September.

The event is to be a “celebration of skate culture,” according to the Borough of Perkasie. With music, giveaways, food and games, attendees can expect a lively and vibrant atmosphere. It will not only highlight the local skateboarding population, but also demonstrate strong community support and engagement.

Local business Hickory Stick will supply ice cream, and event sponsors along with the Perkasie Police Department will offer free giveaways. At 8:30 p.m., a free showing of “School of Rock” will be available at the outdoor amphitheater in Lenape Park.

Built in 2002, the skate park has been an indispensable addition to the Perkasie Borough for the last 22 years. In the early months of 2023, the borough began the process of addressing vandalism and considering future renovations.

Betting on a Closer in Jim Dandy Stakes Loaded With Speed

The $500,000, Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes Presented by Mohegan Sun at Saratoga Race Course isn’t a Grade 1 race, but the recent roster of winners reads like “who’s who” of top-class racehorses. The last three editions have been won by past or future champions Forte (2023), Epicenter (2022), and Essential Quality (2021), while the 2020 edition went to future Dubai World Cup winner Mystic Guide.

The 2024 Jim Dandy this Saturday appears primed to produce a winner of similar acclaim. Although only six horses were entered in the 1 1/8-mile race, three of them are Grade 1 winners, including one who is a champion and one who is a Triple Crown race winner. The small field notwithstanding, the Jim Dandy is shaping up as the most exciting race of the weekend.

Any analysis must begin with #6 Fierceness, the brilliant but inconsistent champion 2-year-old male of 2023. On his best day, Fierceness is fantastic — remember his championship-defining victory in the 2023 FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, in which he crushed Grade 1 winners Muth, Locked, and Timberlake by 6 1/4 lengths? And don’t forget about his demolition of the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby Presented by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms at Xalapa, in which he defeated eight opponents by a record-breaking 13 1/2 lengths.

But Fierceness doesn’t always produce his top-tier effort. In the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes last fall, he started as a heavy favorite but faded badly to finish seventh. In between the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Florida Derby, he was beaten to third place in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes. And though…
