ISHM: July 11 – July 18, 2024

Key Takeaways:

  • POLITICS: UN Appoints New Special Representative For Iraq; Coordination Framework Gives Sunni Parties Days To Agree On A New Speaker – On July 15, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that Omani diplomat Mohammed al-Hassan has been selected to be his new Special Representative for Iraq. Al-Hassan will also serve as the new chief of the Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), whose work is set to end on December 31, 2025. On July 14, sources from the Coordination Framework said the ruling bloc has given Sunni political parties until July 20 to resolve their disputes and agree on their candidate for speaker of parliament, a post that’s been vacant since last November. After that deadline, parliament would reconvene for a vote and “the matter will be left to [individual] representatives” to select the new speaker, without the need for political consensus, explained one Framework lawmaker. Another Framework representative argued that the Framework has the power, and may exercise it after the deadline, to use its numbers in parliament to approve any candidate regardless of Sunni preferences. In other developments, on July 13, Iraq’s Foreign Minister revealed that Baghdad will soon host a meeting between Syrian and Turkish officials to discuss possible solutions to the Syrian crisis. On July 13, protests erupted in the southern province of Diwaniyah amid worsening water and electricity shortages. On July 18, KDP said that it has finally submitted its list of candidates who will compete in the Kurdistan legislative elections on October 20. more…

Expansion to Nanticoke community center in Millsboro approved

GEORGETOWN — A proposal to allow the Nanticoke Indian Cultural Community Center in Millsboro to build out its structure and offer more services was approved by Sussex County Council on Tuesday.

“This would double the size of the cultural community center, allow it to have some new restrooms, a food bank, a flex space for children’s areas and classrooms, additional meeting rooms for arts and crafts,” said David Hutt, an attorney representing the Nanticoke Indian Association before the council.

He added that the approval will also permit existing space in the 27073 John J. Williams Highway facility to be redeveloped.

Cultural programs like drum or dance classes can be held more easily in the larger space, Mr. Hutt added, while certain offerings that require more privacy, like internal ceremonies, can also have their own areas in the bigger location.

The expansion will address these issues and more, Chief Avery Johnson said during an earlier interview.

“We have a lot of elders, so we have to make sure we are prepared. We offer financial literacy and financial independence training, computer training, along with other important issues like the domestic violence roundtables and other discussions we have,” he said, explaining the building’s necessity for growth.

Mr. Hutt continued, “The association plans to extensively renovate the existing structure, as well, and to provide outside added parking areas, walkways, native artwork and some new lighting and landscaping.”

To complete these plans, the applicant sought a change to the conditional use of the property, which has limited building size.

In addition to the size restrictions, the parcel on which the center sits has several legal constraints upon it, including a provision that would revert ownership of the land back to the Indian River School District should it ever not be used as a tribal center,…

Horsham man accused of open lewdness in Lenape Park

One Horsham man is charged with open lewdness after a woman in Lenape Park, in Sellersville, reported him “masturbating as he stared at her across the river.”

Matthew Gagat, 47, of the first block of Sterling Drive in Horsham, denies allegations that he was touching himself, police said.

Perkasie Borough Police Department was called to Lenape Park around 9:02 p.m. on June 27, reports said. A woman said that she was near a Scout cabin in the park system when she saw a man across the creek, on the Sellersville Armory side, who “appeared to be touching himself,” according to police.

She described to the police a white man around 40-years-old, standing approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall with a “stocky build” and dark hair. She said he wore a black cut-off T-shirt and blue jeans, per police reports.

Police said they made contact with Gagat in the described area of the park, and that he matched the woman’s description. Gagat denied masturbating, police said.

Following a written statement provided to police by the woman, Gagat was charged with open lewdness.

Gagat will have a preliminary hearing on July 23 at 1 p.m. in the Magisterial District Court of Magisterial District Judge Regina Armitage is expected to be continued. A hearing is re-scheduled for Aug. 6 at 3:30 p.m. in the same Bucks County Court.

Hiking through the Mid-Atlantic – The Trek

After Pennsylvania, I found myself in a bit of a writing slump. My focus had been redirected toward keeping my body intact and moving forward. The little energy I had remaining was sapped away by the mid-Atlantic heatwave. Instead of writing this post day by day, as I usually do, I’m writing a recap of New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut all at once to the best of my memory, which, according to Hotdog is pretty good.

New Jersey

The mild mental breakdown I had at the start of New Jersey the day before continued onto the following morning. I found myself angrily swinging my poles at the ground like an axe only a few miles into an otherwise beautiful morning. I sat atop Racoon Ridge looking out at the Delaware River as I called my partner Chey, knowing she would help put me at ease. She told me I should take a break, and Hotdog echoed the sentiment. I was extremely frustrated. Mentally I wanted to keep on going, but my foot was advising me otherwise. I swallowed my pride and then me and Hotdog agreed to walk a few miles up to the Mohican Outdoor Center and take a Nero and a full zero the next day.

Rest at the Mohican Outdoor Center

The Mohican Outdoor Center is a nice lakeside spot run by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) and has tent sites as well as bunk accommodations. We opted for a pair of tent sites to save money. The AMC seemed to be making efforts to make the center more attractive to hikers passing by. We enjoyed the cozy atmosphere within their 24/7 lodge equipped with a fireplace and wood walls. We enjoyed talking to one of the caretakers, Johnny Dolla, an older man with…

Jose and Margaret Arroyo, of the Hanover Section of Nanticoke, and Dominick Panetta, of Sugar Notch, were recently honored by the Northeast PA Quilts of Valor Chapter at the Plains American Legion Post 365.

Jose Arroyo enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1989. A two-year veteran, he served as a member of the 340th Military Police, Jamaica, NY. He completed basic training at Fort McClellan, AL and attended U.S. Armor School, served in Germany, and attained Top Security Clearance.

Returning to the United States, his unit was back-up support for Desert Storm/Desert Shield. He was honorably discharged in 1991.

Margaret Arroyo, while a 2002 senior at Greater Nanticoke High School, enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA. Following basic training at Fort Jackson, SC, she was sent to Fort Lee, VA to begin her training as an aircraft refueler and later training as a helicopter gunner.

Called to active duty as part of Company G104th Aviation, she served for 15 months in both Afghanistan and Kandahar. There the honoree completed 32 missions as both a daytime and night vision door gunner on Chinook helicopters in which they would pick up or drop off infantry and supplies in “hot areas.”

After returning to Indiantown Gap in 2004, she continued serving the National Guard and was honorably discharged in 2007.

Dominick Panetta joined the U.S. Marines in 1962 as a part of the 120-delay program while completing his senior year at Nanticoke High School. Following basic training at Parris Island, SC, he was assigned to Naval Air Station, Lakehurst, NJ training as a parachute rigger. To successfully complete the training, Panetta had to complete…

António Guterres names new head for UNAMI

Al Hassan succeeds Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert of the Netherlands, who began her tenure in January 2018. [Getty]

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced Monday the appointment of Mohamed Al Hassan of the Sultanate of Oman as the new special representative for Iraq and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UN’s Secretary-General), the office of the Spokesperson for UN’s Secretary-General said in a statement.

At Baghdad’s request, the UN Security Council decided unanimously at the end of May that UNAMI would conclude its mission in Iraq at the end of 2025, after more than 20 years. The mission was established by a UN Security Council resolution in 2003 following the US-led invasion and the fall of Saddam Hussein.

Al Hassan succeeds Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert of the Netherlands, who began her tenure in January 2018 and delivered her final briefing to the UN Security Council in February. In May, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia Al-Sudani called for the closure of UNAMI, stating that “the grounds for having a political mission in Iraq no longer exist.”

“The appointment of Mr. Al Hassan underscores the United Nations’ ongoing commitment to supporting Iraq in its pursuit of peace, stability, and development. His extensive diplomatic background and leadership experience are expected to greatly benefit the mission and the broader objectives of the UN in the region,” the statement read.

According to the statement, Al Hassan brings over 30 years of experience in preventive diplomacy, peacebuilding, and development. He has served as the permanent representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations in New York since 2019 and has held several key positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Muscat. These include acting undersecretary for diplomatic affairs, chief of staff, and head of the minister’s department.

He has also…

Pike Opera commissions an original chamber opera for 2025

In addition to the fifth annual performance of Opera! Pike! Park! at the Ann Street Park on August 25 at 4 p.m., Pike Opera has just announced that it has commissioned an original chamber opera, inspired by the conservation legacies of Gifford Pinchot and the Lenni Lenape, the people who inhabited the Delaware River Valley for 10,000 years before the European settlers. The opera will debut in 2025 and the announcement of such a bold endeavor added quite a bit of buzz to the annual garden party at the home of Javier Morales and Milford Mayor Sean Strub.

Morales, Pike Opera’s founder and artistic director, said, “This new opera links our deep local history to the timely, urgent, and universal imperative to protect our planet. Our hope is that the opera will also find audiences far beyond Pike County.”

Jim Pedranti, chair of the Pike Opera Board, expressed real excitement about this new work. “Celebrating Gifford Pinchot and the history of the region, we hope it can be performed regularly, perhaps every few years to celebrate and perpetuate Milford’s pioneering conservation legacy and ethos.”

The opera is a celebration of the local culture and environment, and many local people are involved in making it happen. Matt Winkler proposed the idea. “What better way to celebrate what has been created here and what is still being created here than an original work.” Winkler and his wife Lisa provided the seed money to initiate the support, in addition to support from more than 100 donors.

Eileen Smith, president of Grey Towers Heritage Association, said she is “delighted” to play a role in hosting the opening performance in 2025 in the outdoor amphitheater at Grey Towers. And, of course, Nancy Pinchot is involved as historical advisor on the project. It takes a village,…

Ex-Republican concerned Trump is hiding medical report after attack

It has been four days since Donald Trump came inches from death after a failed assassination attempt, and the campaign still hasn’t released any kind of medical report talking about the injuries.

While Washington is at work trying to uncover failures by the U.S. Secret Service on Saturday, the ex-president is walking around the Republican Convention with a giant pad of gauze and tape covering his ear.

This raised concerns from Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL), a former Tea Party Republican who has since turned against Trump and the MAGA movement.

“No medical reports,” posted Walsh. “No doctor’s statements. No information at all on the Republican nominee for President who was shot and injured four days ago. That’s just wrong. Shitty job media. If it were the Democratic nominee who’d been shot, [Sean] Hannity, et al, would be blowing a gasket.”

“Trump has posted that his ear was pierced by a bullet, but the sad fact is that he’s an unreliable source. News organizations need to wait for more credible confirmation of what happened,” wrote journalist Steven Beschloss on Saturday.

Questions have surfaced asking whether the bullet pierced Trump’s ear, grazed it, or broke a piece of the TelePrompter and the glass that shot out at Trump’s ear.

Ex-prosecutor and commentator John Flannery asked, “Was it a bullet or shrapnel from a teleprompter – hey Don, release your medical records.”

“It’s been almost 90 hours since the first assassination attempt on a president or former president in more than four decades, and we still don’t have any info from medical experts who have examined Donald Trump,” said writer Charlotte Clymer. “No interviews,…

Patrick White has been a great supporter of the Mohican people and deserves to represent the 3rd Berkshire District

To the editor:

Patrick White has been a tremendous friend to the Mohican people.

We first worked with Patrick to gain local support for the return of found documents from the 18th century that were discovered in Stockbridge’s Old Town Hall. He built support both locally and with the State House delegation, which culminated in a law signed by then-Gov. Charlie Baker.

I then worked with Patrick on the historic opportunity to secure 351 acres of Monument Mountain for the Tribe. Patrick privately counseled me to not settle for limited access to state-owned property, but instead to pursue the ultimately successful course of action to acquire the land on behalf of the Mohican people. Finally, after two centuries, we will once again steward land in western Massachusetts. We are grateful to the many folks in the Berkshires who helped us. Patrick was one of them.

He conceived of the Stockbridge Mohican Commission, which has been approved by both the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans’ Tribal Council and the Stockbridge Select Board. He successfully advocated for new signage at Housatonic River crossings, signs that celebrate the Mohican language and include a reference to the Tribe. He is now working with our Tribal Liaison to explore the creation of a new Mohican Cultural Center in the Berkshires.

American history has been brutal to indigenous tribes. Proud patriots, Stockbridge Mohicans volunteered together 250 years ago for the Revolutionary Army, and many of them died together at a battle in southern New York. The ensuing poverty and opportunistic greed of a few resulted in our departure from Stockbridge in the early 1800s. After our own trail of tears, we eventually settled in Wisconsin, but the home of our ancestors spans the Hudson and Housatonic valleys.

Patrick has shown he understands that the hard work of…
