Hamilton steelmaker Stelco sold to Cleveland-Cliffs for $3.4B

Hamilton-based steelmaker Stelco Holdings Inc. is set to be acquired by U.S.-based Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. for $3.4 billion Cdn.

Stelco said it has agreed to sell all issued and outstanding common shares for $70 per share to the Ohio-based steel producer.

Stelco chief executive Alan Kestenbaum said he is confident Cleveland-Cliffs will remain a reliable supplier to its customers while maintaining Stelco’s “stature and reputation in Canada and maintaining our Canadian national interests.”

Currently, Stelco maintains two major steelmaking facilities in Ontario — one each in Hamilton and Nanticoke.

CBC Hamilton reached out to Stelco for an interview. However, the company said no one was available for comment.

Stelco said in a news release that as part of the agreement, it will keep its headquarters in Hamilton and build on its existing 1,000-employee footprint in Canada. It will also retain Canadian representation on its management team.

The news release also said Cleveland-Cliffs will continue Stelco’s current community commitments, including collaboration with McMaster University and the CanmetMATERIALS research centre, and maintain the existing research chairs with McMaster. The company will also retain its partnership with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Forge FC, and its 40 per cent equity interest and the master lease of Tim Hortons Field.

Kestenbaum acquired Stelco in 2016 after the company went into creditor protection in 2004 and was sold as a subsidiary to U.S. Steel Co. in 2007. It then returned to creditor protection in 2014 before signing an agreement to be acquired by Kestenbaum’s Bedrock Industries in late 2016.

Cleveland-Cliffs president and CEO Lourenco Goncalves said Kestenbaum was able to turn an “underperforming asset under previous ownership into a very cost-efficient and profit-oriented company.”

He said the deal “keeps national interests at the forefront and recognizes the importance of the workforce,” noting Stelco respects the union representing…

Lenape chamber Ensemble brings back fabulous Philadelphians

The second in the Lenape Chamber Ensemble’s series of Summer Gala Concerts at 8 p.m. July 20 will present a lively and contrasting program of music by three well-loved composers Robert Schumann, Claude Debussy, and Ludwig von Beethoven.

Enjoyment of the music in air-cooled comfort will be enhanced by the superb acoustics of Delaware Valley University’s Life Science auditorium, 700 E. Butler Ave., Doylestown.

On stage will be prominent members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, including the Quartet Iris with violinists Julia Li and Chistine Lim, Violist Che-Hung Chen and cellist Yumi Kendall.

For the first selection, Che-Hung Chen, a violist in the orchestra since the age of 20, joins international prizewinning pianist Marcantonio Barone in the “Marchenbilder for Viola and Piano,” written by Schumann in 1851. The work’s title, meaning “Fairy Tale pictures,” is intended to create shifting moods with the changing rhythms of its four movements,

Next, the Quartet Iris will perform Debussy’s “String Quartet in G minor, Opus 10,” written during the time of his earlier masterpieces such as his “Prélude à l’Apres-midi d’un Faune.” It contains Debussy’s blend of classic quartet writing in the style of Cesar Franck, combined with his dream-like impressionistic methods. This particular Quartet is said to be one of the high points in chamber music literature.

Secretary-General Appoints Mohamed al Hassan of Oman Special Representative for Iraq

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced today the appointment of Mohamed al Hassan of Oman as his new Special Representative for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).  He succeeds Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert of the Netherlands, to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for her commitment and leadership of UNAMI.

Mr. Al Hassan brings to the position a broad range of diplomatic experience with a career spanning over 30 years working on preventive diplomacy, peacebuilding and development.  Most recently, he has served as the Permanent Representative of Oman to the United Nations in New York since 2019.  Prior to that, he held various assignments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Muscat, including Acting Undersecretary for Diplomatic Affairs (2016), Chief of Staff (2015) and Head of the Minister’s Department (2012).

Among various senior-level positions, Mr. Al Hassan served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Oman to the Russian Federation and concurrently as non-resident Ambassador to Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia and the Republic of Moldova.  Mr. Al Hassan also previously held the position of Deputy Permanent Representative of Oman to the United Nations in New York.  Prior to this, he was Deputy Permanent Representative of Oman to the United Nations in Geneva.

Mr. Al Hassan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Washington in Seattle, United States, a Master of Science degree in international relations from St. John’s University in New York, and a PhD in economics from Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics in the Russian Federation.  He speaks Arabic, English, Norwegian and Russian.

Duran Duran announce Halloween MSG show & East Coast tour

Duran Duran celebrated Halloween with a special Las Vegas show in 2022, which inspired their 2023 album Danse Macabre. They’ll keep the spooky spirit going this year with another Halloween show, this time in NYC. They’re promising “a unique production featuring the hits alongside songs from the crypt,” and are inviting “Halloween enthusiasts to show up, dress up, and celebrate.” It happens on Thursday, October 31 at Madison Square Garden, and tickets go on sale Friday, July 12 at 10 AM ET, with various presales starting Wednesday, July 10 at 10 AM ET.

In addition to Halloween in NYC, Duran Duran announced a few fall East Coast shows in the days surrounding, happening in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, New Hampshire, and New York. Tickets for those go on sale at the same time, on Friday, July 12 at 10 AM ET, and you can see all dates below.

Another school goes WILD! – Ohio Ag Net

Joining another of my favorite Buckeye State conservation programs, Dover Intermediate School in Cuyahoga County was recently dedicated as a WILD School Site, according to the Ohio Division of Wildlife (ODOW). Wild School sites are supplementary education programs created by schools where students, teachers, and the community can come together and learn about wildlife and the environment. Dover Intermediate School is the 208th WILD School Site in Ohio and the 10th in Cuyahoga County.

Dover Intermediate School boasts an extensive native plant garden that doubles as a dynamic land lab. Students and educators engage in projects aimed to foster environmental stewardship and hands-on learning, including vegetable composting, bird baths, and native flower cultivation. An on-site pond allows students to learn about aquatic ecosystems. These habitats support amphibians, birds, insects, reptiles, and small mammals, providing firsthand insight to the balance of ecosystems.

Teachers use the native garden and pond as a focal point for learning, integrating core subjects such as math, science, social studies, art, and music into an outdoor curriculum. Through outdoor exploration, students witness everyday subjects come to life, fostering creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills while nurturing their physical and mental well-being. 

The WILD School Sites program, administered by the ODOW, is considered an action extension of the national Project WILD program. Any educational property used by students, educators, and the local community as a place to learn about and benefit from wildlife and the environment can be certified. The sites function within the premise that every site, regardless of size and location, can provide outdoor educational opportunities that can and should be part of an integrated environmental education program. Bridgeport’s new VeganishCT Cafe reflects husband-and-wife owners’ story

“He’s the vegan, and I’m the -ish,” said Hannah Campbell, who co-owns VeganishCT Cafe with her husband, Nate Campbell.

The couple’s restaurant has been open in Bridgeport for a few weeks, and on July 9, it will hold its grand opening. While it doesn’t yet have a menu available online, one posted in the Vegan Connecticut Facebook group shows that VeganishCT Cafe serves salads, sandwiches, breakfast and brunch options and main courses including vegan chicken and waffles and cauliflower steak.

The “-ish” comes in because VeganishCT Cafe also serves some dishes made with cheese, dairy or fish. These are cooked seperately from the vegan dishes, Hannah Campbell said, to avoid cross contamination. 

Hannah Campbell said that some people have inquired why the restaurant isn’t completely vegan. Her answer to this is that they’re “kind of doing what people do anyway” when they’re in a couple or family where one party is vegan and the other isn’t. She said that even without the restaurant, she would have learned to cook vegan food for her partner, but that doesn’t mean that she’s ready to give up animal products entirely.

According to Hannah Campbell, Nate Campbell, who is also a personal trainer, believes that every bit counts, even if it’s just giving up meat for one or two meals a week. The couple wanted to encourage diners to come in with their loved ones, vegan or not, and find something for everyone, she said.

She said that the first few weeks have already been busy with members of their local community and vegans from other parts of the state.

“Because there are so few vegan restaurants…people will travel,” Hannah Campbell said, noting that she and her husband have driven an hour and a half to try a vegan restaurant.

PERRYSVILLE — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has opened registration for the 10th annual Ohio Women’s Outdoor Adventure Weekend.

The three-day event is set to take place at the breathtaking Mohican State Park Lodge & Conference Center from Sept. 20 to 22.

This exciting weekend is designed to introduce women to an array of outdoor skills, including boating, fishing, shooting sports, and nature programming.

The program, which is open to women aged 16 and older (minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian), is tailored for beginners while offering a welcoming, pressure-free environment to explore new outdoor activities.

“This event provides a fantastic opportunity for women to build their outdoor recreation skills, forge new friendships, and simply have fun,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz.

“Women of all ages will enjoy a weekend filled with discovering new outdoor pursuits.”

The event involves several of ODNR’s divisions including, Parks & Watercraft, Forestry, Natural Areas & Preserves, Wildlife, and Geological Survey.

This ensures a diverse range of activities and programs, as well as expert guidance.

Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of sessions, such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, hiking, shotgun and rifle basics, stream quality monitoring, wild edibles, sustainable living, and more.

Accommodations for the weekend will be at the Mohican State Park Lodge & Conference Center, located in Perrysville (Ashland County). Situated on thousands of wooded acres, Mohican State Park is a must-see for adventurers and nature lovers.

Attendees will enjoy a fun weekend while staying in newly updated, comfortable lodge rooms.
