State Police: Lyft driver charged with sexually assaulting customer

Aug. 22—PLYMOUTH TWP. — A driver for ride-share Lyft was arrested on allegations he sexually assaulted a customer on Tuesday.

Edwin Valentin Perez, 39, of Four Seasons Court, Hazle Township, was identified by the victim through online arrangements for the ride-share, according to court records.

Investigators at the Pennsylvania State Police at Wilkes-Barre believe there may be more victims.

“We’re asking anybody else who feels they may be a victim of a similar crime or a similar circumstance or had information about the suspect himself or any other similar incidents to come forward and contact us,” said Trooper William Evans.

According to the criminal complaint:

The victim arranged a ride from Nanticoke to Plymouth through the Lyft app that identified Perez as the driver.

After picking up the victim, Perez stopped at a convenience store in Nanticoke and while crossing the Nanticoke/West Nanticoke Bridge, Perez opened a bottle with a black label, a lightning bolt with the word energy with two cotton balls inside the bottle.

The victim began to feel as though he was being affected by the substance as Perez pulled onto a dirt road with a gate and a shed in Plymouth Township.

Once Perez stopped, the victim reported he felt he was losing consciousness when Perez sexually assaulted him, the complaint says.

Perez then drove the victim to Plymouth dropping him off at a store before speeding away, according to the complaint.

“One of the reason we suspect there may be more victims, we are aware the suspect we have in custody, he is a driver for Lyft and Uber and has given multiple rides in the area over the last few months,” Evans said. “We did have a previous incident with him that did not rise to the level of sexual assault as this one did. UW-Stevens Point students helping to advance forestry science

Have you ever wondered what lies beneath the bark of a towering hardwood tree? At the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, a group of passionate student researchers uncovered the hidden stories written within Wisconsin’s majestic and economically important hardwoods. 

Forestry student research assistants Alice Maas, Hannah Kovalaske, and Eric Alfredson, working with the Wisconsin Forestry Center at UW-Stevens Point and in collaboration with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, have begun phase two of the Photographic Guide to Defects in Hardwoods series. Their work is not only advancing forestry science but also providing valuable hands-on experience that is shaping their future careers.

This project focuses on how northern red oaks respond to wounds, building on the knowledge gained from a study done in 2023 on hard maples. These guides serve as important tools for foresters and loggers, helping them make crucial decisions about tree harvesting. Forestry professors Mike Demchik and Les Werner guided the students on the project.

In 2023, the team ventured into the woods of Shawano County to select trees with visible defects such as seams, branch tearouts and epicormic sprouts. These trees were carefully felled, cut into logs and transported to the UW-Stevens Point College of Natural Resources Wood Utilization Lab. Unlike typical milling practices that aim to hide defects, they highlighted them to better understand how they develop.

The result? A collection of beautifully cut boards that revealed the extent of each defect. The team spent weeks photographing and measuring these boards, turning raw data into valuable insights. Their hard work culminated in presentations at the Jim and Katie Krause College of Natural Resources Student Research Symposium, where they shared their findings with the community.

REEL RECS: ‘THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS’

Staff from your Monroe County Public Library recommend some of their favorites from the collection.

WHAT: The Last of the Mohicans (1992)

WHY: It seemed a little odd when Michael Mann, best known as director of contemporary crime shows and movies — and executive producer of “Miami Vice” — delved into costume drama. Even odder was Serious Method Actor and Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis taking the role of Hawkeye, the character also known as Natty Bumppo in the source material, an 1826 novel by James Fenimore Cooper (here he goes by the much cooler Nathaniel). The plot is altered quite a bit from the novel, which is just fine by all accounts of anyone who has managed to read the thing. Mostly this is a gorgeous — like all Mann films — drama with nonstop action and just the right amount of romance, set around the siege of Fort William Henry during the French and Indian War. North Carolina stands in for the Adirondacks, but the setting is so beautiful you don’t stop to think about the implausibility of running on a mountain trail while shooting two long rifles at once, or how a canoe chase over waterfalls would work.

Susan Gerth’s message at the 9th Desiree’s Ride came through loud and clear in Brantford Saturday morning.

Gerth’s goal is to raise awareness of what victims of crime and their families go through in Ontario. 

“For those who haven’t had to experience this, I pray you never have to,” said Gerth, speaking to riders and passengers before Saturday’s ride. “No one understands the effects, the pain, the suffering of victim experience until it happens to you.” 

About 50 riders and passengers participated in a ‘scenic motorcycle ride’ to Nanticoke Saturday, coming from across southern Ontario, including Brantford, Woodstock and Norfolk County. 

Gerth’s daughter, Desiree Gallagher, was a victim of violence. She died in 2015 at age 23.

“My daughter’s story is one of many,” said Gerth. “I choose to talk about my daughter’s tragedy to bring awareness, and I have great support to help me do so. I want to bring awareness to what victims have to go through. It’s a never-ending rollercoaster and a life sentence.

Passing lane helps Sainthood take Pocono feature – Harnesslink

WILKES-BARRE, PA –On a day not favorable to front-end horses at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania, the International Moni sophomore gelding Sainthood came first-over, ducked to the inside, then moved up in the famous Pocono Pike to catch pacesetting favorite Royal Emeralds in 1:54.4 in the $15,000 featured harness racing trot on Monday, August 12.

Favored Royal Emeralds, going for her third straight win, went right to the lead and put out fractions of :27.3, :57, and 1:25.2, having a clear advantage most of the race. The Joe Pavia Jr.-trained Sainthood, who equaled his mark for Bay Pond Racing Stable, moved up to get into striking position, then caught the leader to win by three-quarters of a length, with a late-charging Wish List only another neck back.

George Napolitano Jr. drove Sainthood and watching George battle with Matt Kakaley for the top rung on the Pocono drivers’ victory ladder is like watching a heavyweight prizefight. Bam – George wins four on Saturday. Boom – Matt comes back with three on Sunday. On Monday’s card, Napolitano had four wins and Kakaley two, leaving Matt with a 185-184 lead over George – at least at this very moment.

After Tuesday racing at 1 p.m., it will be time for the biggest day of the Pocono racing year this Saturday, with $2,300,000 to be distributed on Sun Stakes Saturday, with the top three-year-old and Invitational horses in North America, such as Legendary Hanover and Jiggy Jog S, coming to the mountain oval to add to their reputations during a 14-race card that begins at 2:30 p.m. Free Pocono programs are or will be available at

Asayish Arrests Terrorist Who Targeted Over 25 Security Personnel‌

The Kurdistan Region Security Agency (Asayish) published a video containing the confession of an Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist who was captured in Qarahanjir. The individual admitted to targeting over 25 members of the security forces.

The Asayish issued a statement, which was shared with PUKMEDIA, stating that on July 14, 2024, an armed clash took place between an ISIS terrorist and the Asayish forces in the Qarahanjiri district of Kirkuk province. As a result, Asayish member Jwamer Aziz Rashid was killed, another member was injured, and an ISIS terrorist was killed. Additionally, terrorist Haider Karim was wounded and captured. In response to the martyrdom of Jwamer, the hideouts of the terrorists were promptly destroyed using F-16 Fighter jets.

The operation was conducted in collaboration with the General Directorate of Asayish Operations, the Iraqi National Security Agency, Counter-Terrorism Cell, the Kirkuk Security Directorate, and the Kirkuk Operations Chamber, as stated.

The statement also said that, following an investigation, the arrested terrorists admitted to committing multiple crimes and that the General Directorate of Security Operations will release all the evidence, videos, and information regarding their terrorist activities. These acts specifically targeted over 25 members of the Iraqi and Kurdistan security forces.

It added that following the confessions and investigations, the General Directorate of Asayish Operations successfully caught the terrorist (Ali Abdullah) in Kirkuk and subsequently apprehended the terrorist (Mukhlif Zga’ al-Gaquli) in the Rashad area. Terrorists Zidan Khalaf Elias and Nizhan Zidan Khalaf were captured in the Qarahanjir district and Chiman village during a separate operation. According to initial information and as a consequence of investigations, the forces of the Asayish Operations Directorate captured the terrorist (Ala Shuja’i).
