Mohegan hands COO role permanently to interim chief

Tribal operator Mohegan has named Joseph J. Hasson as the company’s permanent COO after several months as the interim operations chief.

Hasson was initially appointed to the role in an interim capacity, following the resignation Jody Madigan back in April.

Madigan’s tenure officially ended on August 1 after taking a leave of absence.

Hasson will be tasked with overseeing the day-to-day operations of Mohegan’s venues across the US, Canada, and Northern Asia.

He will also continue as general manager of Mohegan Casino at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas while the casino transitions ownership.

Hasson will report into Mohegan CEO Ray Pineault and will work within the tribe’s leadership team to “align all strategic processes with company-wide goals.”

On Hasson’s appointment, Ray Pineault said: “Joe Hasson’s expertise, garnered over more than 40 years in the gaming and hospitality industries, coupled with his exemplary leadership at our Las Vegas property, positions him uniquely to ensure strategic alignment and continuity across Mohegan’s diverse portfolio.

“We are confident that his leadership as our COO will be instrumental in our sustained success.”

Hasson’s permanent appointment represents the latest shake up in Mohegan’s executive team.

Back in June, the company named Nelson Parker as its chief strategy officer after two years with the company.

Mohegan was also named in the EGR US Power Rankings in April, finishing in 18th position.

Cussin’s Nail Salon and Dispensary doubles down on self care

Yet, owning two businesses has proved plenty good enough for her.

With the opening of a dispensary, the local nail artist has expanded her offerings and now provides an even more uplifting affair. Cussin’s Cannabis and Nail Salon is located at 2075 Central Ave. in Colonie and is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. during its soft opening period.

“All the clients, when they leave the salon, the first thing that they do is they sit in their car for a couple minutes and they look at their nails,” said Rodriguez. “They’re feeling fresh, they’re feeling fly, and now they get to do all that, and also buy weed and go home with weed, which I think just literally elevates the whole experience.”

Rodriguez leases both storefronts in the Central Avenue building, with separate entrances situated on either side to access the different parts of the business, ensuring compliance with state regulations. The nail salon has been in business for six years and was formerly located on Jay Street in downtown Schenectady. The salon moved to the Central Avenue building in June of this year and some staffers work on both sides of the business.

“The majority of the walk-in traffic is definitely salon clients right now,” said Rodriguez. “And then, I would say after that, would be pick-up orders…People like to be able to just come in and it’s ready. You can be in and out in three minutes.”

To book services at the nail salon, Rodriguez highly recommends booking in advance as demand is high. She is not taking on any new clients herself, but some of her staffers — who she mentors through the process of running their business within a business — are. Reach the salon at 518-313-4200.

Swann Memorial Fountain in Logan Circle turns 100 years old this year.

Swann Memorial Fountain in Logan Square turns 100 years old this year, write Isaac Avilucea and Mike D’Onofrio for Axios.

The massive fountain on the Ben Franklin Parkway was built in 1924. It was designed and built by architect Wilson Eyre Jr. and sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder.

Over its now century-long history, Swann Memorial has been a must-see for tourists and an unofficial — albeit also illegal — swimming hole on sweltering hot, summer days.

The center of the fountain consists of a trio of bronze Native American figures surrounded by water bronze frogs and turtles.

According to the Association for Public Art, the three bronze figures each represent the city’s three main waterways.

The statue of a young girl on her side against a swan represents Wissahickon Creek.

The woman holding the neck of a swan over her head is the Schuylkill River.

The man, who is a member of the Lenni Lenape tribe, with a fish on his head is the Delaware River.

The fountain gets its namesake from Wilson Cary Swann, the founder of the Philadelphia Fountain Society.

Print Friendly, PDF & EmailPrint Friendly, PDF & Email

US tribal casino operator Mohegan said overnight that its recently opened Korean integrated resort, Mohegan Inspire in Incheon, has generated net revenues of US$101.1 million since opening late last year but noted both visitation and volumes are showing strong month-on-month growth.

The contribution of Inspire helped push the company to group-wide revenues of US$504.2 million for the three months to 30 June 2024, up 21.4% year-on-year and its highest quarterly revenue result in history.

This was also the first quarter in which Mohegan has reported gaming and non-gaming results for its Korean resort, revealing net table win of US$35.2 million and net slot win of US$2.5 million. Hotel occupancy reached 70.8% with an average daily rate of US$190.

Notably, casino visitation has shown solid sequential growth every month since its 3 February launch, from 10,771 casino visitors in February to 15,803 in March, 19,295 in April, 24,781 in May and 27,411 in June.

Mohegan’s Chief Operating Officer Joseph Hasson also revealed during Mohegan’s earnings call that the trend had continued into July.

“When you look at the month of July, the ramp continues and it is significant,” he said. “We see it in tables, we see it in slots and we see it across the board in non-gaming revenues and what that does is puts us very close to profitability as we continue this ramp. It’s very encouraging compared to what’s behind it in the [March] quarter or dating back to the opening.”

Mohegan CEO Ray Pineault added that surpassing US$100 million in revenues was “one of the many important milestones” as the property continues to ramp.

Smithsonian Design Triennial names participants to create 25 installations related to the concept of home

This fall, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum will exhibit Making Home—Smithsonian Design Triennial. The museum has commissioned 25 site-specific installations examining “design’s role in shaping the physical and emotional realities of home across the U.S.,” as stated in a press release. The multi-floor exhibition will be on view at the Andrew and Louise Carnegie Mansion from November 2, 2024 through Summer 2025. It will be the seventh iteration of the museum’s Design Triennial series, which began in 2000, and is in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.

“All of [the installations] gesture towards a greater understanding of how we are living in this nation and how design plays an active role in this shared experience,” Maria Nicanor, director of Cooper Hewitt, said in a statement.

The museum previously announced the three curators of the upcoming Smithsonian Design Triennial: Alexandra Cunningham Cameron, curator of contemporary design and Hintz Secretarial Scholar at Cooper Hewitt; Christina L. De León, associate curator of Latino design at Cooper Hewitt; and Michelle Joan Wilkinson, curator of architecture and design at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Johnston Marklee will oversee the exhibition design.

Each floor at the Andrew and Louise Carnegie Mansion will be dedicated to a specific theme. Going Home presents the diverse ways that domestic spaces impact people’s “experiences, behaviors, and values,” while Seeking Home explores the concept of home through the “lenses of cultural heritage, the human body, imagined landscapes, and refuge.” The final theme, Building Home, pushes beyond the single-family construction model to consider new ways of conceptualizing and designing the home, such as cooperative living, community space, land stewardship, decolonial practices, and historic preservation.

Selected participants include Leong Leong, architecture studio and design consultancy founded…
