The Land of Bows then Tenements

While spending a few days in New York City last week, I happened to hear an NPR story about the spread of an invasive ant species in Manhattan: dubbed the ManhattAnt. Arriving in 2011, it is now vying with the pavement ant to be the most common ant species. On first look, they don’t seem so bad. They don’t bite, though they do climb, meaning skyscrapers are accessible, but in an aspirational city like Manhattan that deserves respect. And while a minor ant species in its homeland of Europe, the continent they’re from, they has become dominant in Manhattan, with scientists having found that they are “very aggressive” towards other ants, even other ManhattAnt colonies. Moreover, they are spreading beyond Manhattan at the rate of a mile a year (fast in ant terms) with a potential range from Maine to Georgia.

As I heard the story, after visits to the Museum of the City of New York and the Tenement Museum, it was extra poignant, as it sounds eerily similar to another story of an invasive sub-species that had taken over the island in the early 1600s, that of the European colonists, who colonized Lenape land in the early 1600s.

Hoards

The Museum of the City of New York (City Museum) had several excellent data visualization efforts—mapping as a tree ring the different waves of immigration in NYC from its early beginnings, and an excellent digital map that painted a picture of the transition from Lenape land to Dutch colony to megacity. But let’s start with Lenape time, when the population of Manhattan and surrounding areas was about 2,000.

Mannahatta is a Lenape word for “the place where wood is gathered for bows.” Such a beautiful and evocative image. I can imagine this island forested,1 filled with game and cultivated for millennia by the…

Details on deadly Nanticoke shooting

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Court documents have been released regarding a shooting in Nanticoke where a 17-year-old was killed.

According to the search warrant, on Sunday, September 1 around 4:42 p.m., officers were called to Minden Court in Nanticoke for a gunshot victim.

Police stated once on the scene they found an 18-year-old man sitting on the steps of the house, holding the 17-year-old gunshot victim, in his arms.

Investigators stated the 18-year-old and the victim were “wrestling” when they fell into a wooden cabinet causing a gun to fall onto the living room floor, striking the victim.

However, later the 18-year-old admitted that he was fooling around with a gun when it discharged and hit the victim, the search warrant states.

Court documents reported that officers seized the clothing worn by the 18-year-old, suspected firearms used, shell casings, and any forensic evidence found on the scene.

A police investigation revealed the weapon was a semi-automatic pistol.

Authorities requested a search warrant to take Crawn’s clothes for testing.

Police have not stated if an arrest has been made in the shooting.

Kawan Ikee Scarborough shown at a preliminary arraignment in Nanticoke on June 5, 2024. Ed Lewis | Times Leader

WILKES-BARRE — A registered sexual offender charged with fatally beating a woman inside her Nanticoke apartment in 2023 waived his right to a preliminary hearing Friday, sending charges of criminal homicide and aggravated assault to Luzerne County Court.

Kawan Ikee Scarborough, 39, was charged by the Pennsylvania State Police at Wilkes-Barre in June 2024, for the beating death of Lastarr Williams, 27, inside an apartment at 203 W. Church St. on May 27, 2023, according to court records.

Scarborough was linked to the beating death by bloody sneakers and clothing seized by investigators from a residence in Scranton, court records say.

Williams was found deceased inside her apartment when her daughter told a neighbor her mother would not wake up.

The child later told investigators and family, court records say, Scarborough struck Williams in the face and chest with a hammer.

Investigators observed a bloody sneaker print, blood spatter throughout the apartment and mail with Scarborough’s name inside the apartment.

Court records say Scarborough was recorded by surveillance cameras jumping over a fence behind the apartment at about 9:58 p.m. on May 26, 2023.

Investigators learned Scarborough was given a ride to an apartment in Scranton where Scarborough was known to frequent. Sneakers and clothing with blood spatter seized from the Scranton apartment matched Williams’ DNA, court records say.

Attorneys James J. Scanlon and Max C. Lubin represent Scarborough.

Assistant district attorneys Carly Levandoski and Brian Coleman are prosecuting.

VENICE 2024 Orizzonti Extra

by Fabien Lemercier

01/09/2024 – Frédéric Farrucci delivers a thrilling modern western following a Corsican shepherd hunted down by mafiosi and brilliantly played by Alexis Manenti

Review: The Mohican

Alexis Manenti in The Mohican

“You’ve become an anomaly in the landscape. You very well know how this will end, I won’t draw you a picture”. When the very source of your existence is threatened by dangerous characters, the choice is simple: to submit to them, or to confront them at your own risk. It’s the second option that compulsively chooses the taciturn and stubborn protagonist of Frédéric Farrucci’s captivating second feature, The Mohican, unveiled in the Orizzonti Extra programme of the 81st Venice Film Festival. Moreover, the setting is Corsica, where no one lacks character, in a territory plagued by crime that navigates between seaside business and underground independence movement.

(The article continues below – Commercial information)

“We’re interested in your land – But it’s not buildable? – That isn’t your problem – I work on this land! – Monstrous interests are at play, they go beyond you”. Nicknamed “the last of the Mohicans” by a friend because he’s the last to still keep his herd of goats along the coast, on the peninsula of Santa Manza, solitary shepherd Joseph (an extraordinary Alexis Manenti) is more than a little worried about the surprise visit of these potential buyers he knows well. As a neighbour who sold his land admits, “you don’t say no to these people”. And thus they soon return, armed. The situation gets out of hand (“I became crazy”) and Joseph runs away in the bushes after leaving a dead person behind. He is now wanted by the police and chased by his enemies while his niece Vannina (Mara Taquin) investigates…

“Short Little White Girl”: LV Aces Star Discusses Meeting Her Becky Hammon for the Very First Time

For Alysha Clark, meeting Becky Hammon was a huge deal. As a six-time WNBA All-Star, Hammon was already a well-established name in the women’s league. On August 31, 2011, she became the seventh player to record 5,000 points in WNBA history. Clark, on the other hand, was a mere rookie. Despite being drafted as the 17th overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft, she remained off the roster for two seasons. Although it was a bit late when her opportunity finally came, it offered immense possibilities, and meeting Hammon was one of them.

After playing the offseason in the Israeli National League, Clark was finally signed by the Seattle Storm in 2012—two seasons before Becky Hammon’s retirement from her playing career. “Well, I never got to play with her because I got cut, but she was my first ever vet,” Clark told Kate Martin in a recent episode of the Las Vegas Aces podcast.

For Clark, the best encounter with Hammon was her first day at the gym after the draft. It was 9 AM, and she was at the gym early as rookies usually hit the hardwood before practice. “They were showing me where we would practice, and I just heard this clanking. So, you walk in, the court’s down here, and then upstairs, there’s a walk track and a weight room area, and I heard all these weights,” she added.

Clark believed it was just a regular practice day at the gym until she saw a “short little white girl.” Completely unaware, Clark asked her teammates about the girl and was surprised to learn it was Becky Hammon. With a high ponytail and black weightlifting gloves, Hammon appeared like a normal player to her. While Clark was still observing, her teammates asked, “She’s up there,…
