UNAMI welcomes start of election campaigning in Kurdistan Region

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) on Wednesday welcomed the start of the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections campaigning period and called for a peaceful process.

“The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) welcomes the commencement today of the campaign period for the upcoming Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections scheduled for 20 October 2024,” UNAMI said in a statement.

The UN mission emphasized the need for a campaign free of violence and intimidation.

“UNAMI looks to all candidates, other political actors and the media to foster a climate of respect, inclusivity and open dialogue throughout the campaign,” continued the statement.

Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) on Tuesday announced September 25 as the first date of election campaigns which will last until midnight on October 15.

A total of 1,191 candidates are vying for the 100-seat Kurdistan parliament, according to IHEC. That number includes 823 men, 368 women, and 38 candidates from minority communities.

Nearly 2.9 million people are eligible to vote, including around 215,000 early voters. There will be 1,400 polling stations, including locations in the disputed areas and most Iraqi provinces, for eligible voters.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Tuesday called on the political parties to run a peaceful campaign, while remaining respectful to women and the symbols of ethnic and religious minorities.

Early voting for security forces and internally displaced persons (IDPs) is scheduled for October 18, while the general vote will take place on October 20.

The electoral process has faced numerous challenges, with interference from Baghdad exacerbating tensions between the Kurdistan Region’s political parties, particularly between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

The Kurdistan Region last held elections in 2018. The upcoming elections were initially scheduled for 2022, but have been delayed several times.

Ways Wissahickon Valley Park makes Philly more resilient against climate change – Metro Philadelphia

Sign up for our Daily Email newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest local news throughout Philadelphia.

Spanning 2,000 acres with more than 50 miles of trails, Wissahickon Valley Park in northwest Philadelphia offers a variety of recreational opportunities, from hiking and biking to bird watching and picnicking.

We are a professor of history who co-authored a book on the Wissahickon Valley and an assistant professor of biology. We teach students at Chestnut Hill College, which sits directly across the street from this lush urban park, about the environmental history of the Wissahickon forest and the importance of preserving its biodiversity. We’re also developing a documentary on the Wissahickon funded by the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

We want our students – and all Philadelphians – to understand the importance of protecting this urban ecosystem as a way to build climate resilience.

Like many of the country’s other great urban parks – from Central Park in New York or Rock Creek Park in Washington to the smaller Phalen Park in St. Paul, Minnesota – the Wissahickon lowers the city’s temperatures, reduces its carbon footprint, protects the water supply and mitigates floods. And, it remains an active arena for community building and engagement, which further increases Philadelphia’s resilience to climate change.

Venice 2024 Review: THE MOHICAN, Quiet Battle Between Tradition and Corruption

Venice 2024 Review: THE MOHICAN, Quiet Battle Between Tradition and Corruption

French filmmaker Frédéric Farrucci delivers an unflinching exploration of modern-day Corsica in The Mohican, blending elements of neo-Western cinema with the political tensions of land exploitation. The film serves as both a personal survival story and an allegory of resistance, with the landscape becoming a battleground where tradition confronts corruption.

At the heart of The Mohican is Joseph Cardelli (Alexis Manenti), one of the last remaining goatherds on the Corsican coast. Joseph’s land is coveted by local mafia figures eager to transform the picturesque coastline into luxury real estate. While the surrounding properties have already fallen into their grasp, Joseph remains the last holdout, though the mafia’s patience is wearing thin.

Initially, the pressure on Joseph comes in the form of seemingly polite, though persistent, offers to sell his land. When he refuses, the tone shifts, and the once amicable negotiations are replaced by more overt threats.

Farrucci deliberately stages the confrontation off-camera, building tension through implication rather than explicit violence. However, Joseph’s refusal and mishandled gun eventually forces him into a desperate flight, setting the stage for a cat-and-mouse chase through Corsica’s rugged terrain.

2_LM_Portrait-Joseph.jpg

What begins as a pastoral social drama transforms into a suspenseful thriller, evoking echoes of The Fugitive, albeit with a distinctly Western flavor. Joseph’s frantic escape across the island upends the idyllic image of Corsica, exposing an undercurrent of violence that contrasts sharply with the holidaying French tourists who remain oblivious to the chaos.

As the pursuit intensifies, Joseph is drawn deeper into conflict, enlisting the help of an old friend and finding himself increasingly entangled with local criminal elements. The involvement…

New food at the 169th Bloomsburg Fair

Choosing where to stop first isn’t as easy as it looks, but we landed on the Old Farmer Tea Company.

Customers can choose from a variety of five different teas from the Sugar Loaf-based business.

“We actually started this business because we were looking for a little bit of a healthier alternative to less sugar than the major brands and just to like have different flavors, you know, give people options,” said Samantha Dubesky, volunteer at Old Farmer Tea Company.

Next up is R Bar and Grill. The restaurant located in Nanticoke boasts over 80 wing sauces to choose from. Workers are offering up 15 of those flavors at the fair.

“We’re doing wings, we are doing them in small orders of 3, or you could do 6 or 12, again with any of the sauces or dry rubs, we have boneless bites, we’re doing buffalo chicken tacos, and chicken wing egg rolls,” said Lauren Maga, owner R Bar and Grill.

The Grill Reaper food truck has been dishing out delicious comfort food for two years, but this is the first time it’s parked here at the fairgrounds.

“You won’t find unique burgers like ours anywhere else; we do cheese steaks, mac n cheese with smoked gouda and cheddar, pulled pork, we do all kinds of delicious things out of here,” said Christopher Apfel, The Grill Reaper owner.

Horr’s Hotdogs has been a fair staple for 13 years, but the business is debuting two new items this week for pickle lovers. First is the pickle dog –  a bacon-wrapped hot dog snuggled into a pickle bun.  If you’re feeling thirsty, the food truck is also providing a unique twist on classic lemonade.

“We’re going through more pickles, we have more pickle juice, so we came up with a recipe with lemon juice, sugar, and pickle…

Football Game Preview:

Suggested Video

The Mountain Lakes Lakers are taking a road trip to square off against the Boonton Bombers on Friday. Both are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.

Mountain Lakes took a loss when they played away from home last Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. Everything went their way against Lenape Valley as Mountain Lakes made off with a 27-6 win. The victory was some much needed relief for the Lakers as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Boonton). They put the hurt on Hopatcong with a sharp 42-18 win on Friday. Considering the Bombers have won three games by more than 20 points this season, Friday’s blowout was nothing new.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Boonton to victory, but perhaps none more so than Sylas White, who rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns on only 14 carries. White is on a roll when it comes to rushing touchdowns, as he’s now punched in two or more in the last four games he’s played dating back to last season. Drew Cabalar was another key player, rushing for 102 yards and three touchdowns on only 13 carries.

He was just one part of a punishing run game: Boonton was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 353 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they’ve now rushed for at least 195 rushing yards in seven consecutive matches dating back to last season.

Mountain Lakes’ first…
