Barnegat Drug Dealer With Stolen Gun Sentenced, Prosecutors Say

Quaison Ellis, 25, was sentenced on Friday, Sept. 13 to 10 years in state prison, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said in a news release. He pleaded guilty on Monday, July 15 to several charges related to two incidents.

Investigators established surveillance outside a home on Hawthorne Lane in Barnegat on Friday, Sept. 10, 2021. Ellis was seen leaving the home and then entered a vehicle’s front passenger seat.

Detectives followed the vehicle to a home in Paterson and Ellis was seen meeting with a man. He returned to the vehicle and put a bag in the trunk before returning to Barnegat.

Police stopped the vehicle and searched it, seizing about 1,550 wax folds of heroin. Ellis was brought to the Ocean County Jail and released on bail.

More than a year later, Barnegat police and the county’s SWAT team executed a search warrant on the Hawthorne Lane home on Friday, Dec. 9, 2022. Detectives found an undisclosed amount of cocaine and heroin.

Investigators also seized a Kel-Tec .32-caliber gun that was stolen from a vehicle in Stafford Township on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022. Ellis was brought back to the county jail and released again on bail.

Ellis pleaded guilty to possession of more than one-half ounce but less than five ounces of heroin with intent to distribute in the 2021 case. He also pleaded guilty to possession of more than one-half ounce but less than five ounces of cocaine with intent to distribute, being a certain person not to possess a firearm, and burglary in the 2022 incident.

Ellis must serve at least five years before he’s eligible for parole.

H.S. Football: Pittston Area posts shutout of Nanticoke Area

Sep. 7—YATESVILLE — Matt Walter. CJ Pietrzak. Lucas Lopresto.

Good luck dealing with that trio of weapons.

Pittston Area used the talents of its three offensive stars to run past Nanticoke Area 55-0 on Friday night at Charley Trippi Stadium. Walter, Pietrzak and Lopresto were collectively responsible for 30 of those points.

“In this conference and district, you’ve got to be able to run the football, so I think we’ve been doing that pretty well the last two weeks,” said Pittston Area coach Joe DeLucca. “We’ve got to continue buttoning some things up on the offensive side of the ball.”

Just about the only blemish on the Patriots’ side of the box score were their seven penalties, which cost them 60 yards.

Pittston Area got off to a hot start, scoring touchdowns on two of its first three drives of the game. Both of those scores came courtesy of quarterback Walter. He scored from 9 and 10 yards out in the first quarter.

CJ Pietrzak took over in the second quarter, which is where Pittston Area’s dominance on the night became stark. The Patriots scored 31 points in the second frame, with Pietrzak scoring on runs of 1 and 50 yards. In between, Walter hooked up with Lopresto for a 40-yard strike. And with a minute left in the quarter, Aidan Brody expanded the Patriot lead to 47-0 on, appropriately, a 47-yard dash to the end zone.

Special teams played a big part in the first half. For one, kicker Gavin Wolfe routinely pinned the Trojan offense inside its own 20-yard line with his booming kickoffs after each score. Wolfe tacked on a 31-yard field goal later in the midst of Pittston Area’s second-quarter onslaught.

The game also featured a safety, which spouted from a broken fourth down play. Punter Chris Julian was swarmed by Patriot special teamers,…

Localised interlinkages between Climate, Peace, and Security in Iraq: UNAMI Climate, Peace and Security Analysis Report (August 2023 – May 2024)

Attachments

Executive Summary

Iraq is among the world’s most climate vulnerable countries because of its geographic location and existing environmental fragility which interact with socio-economic and institutional factors. While Iraq is enjoying its most stable period since 2003, governance challenges, instability and violence still exist. Climate change has the potential to exacerbate these existing tensions to undermine peace and increase the risk of conflict. This report identifies four primary localised climate, peace and security risk pathways in Iraq. It further proposes entry points for climate, peace and security interventions and provides recommendations for addressing climate, peace, and security risks.

The primary localised climate, peace and security risk pathways in Iraq are: 1) direct competition for natural resources, 2) exploitation of natural resources by armed actors, 3) limited and politically motivated assistance for climate-displacement and 4) non-participatory, centralised natural resource management.

Direct competition for natural resources manifests itself as regular inter-community conflicts, primarily disputes about surface and ground water. Community conflicts in Iraq are often referred to as tribal conflicts. However, this oversimplifies the climate, peace and security relationships since the groups in conflict often have access to significant weapons and have affiliations with other armed groups and political parties. As a result, water conflicts can escalate quickly, leading to injuries and fatalities. Better natural resource management and governance, especially the reduction of water loss and pollution, is needed to reduce the risks of conflict. Integrated water resource management initiatives supported by the UN and the Government of Iraq should be clearly informed by climate, peace and security risk analysis to ensure positive peace and security impacts.

The exploitation of natural resources by armed actors is a significant and growing climate, peace and security risk in Iraq. It is reflective of the wider integration of armed groups in the social, political…

Hit Hard by Hurricane Ida, South Perkasie Covered Bridge Is Coming Back

The relocated South Perkasie Covered Bridge in Lenape Park before Hurricane Ida swept through.

Image via South Perkasie Covered Bridge, YouTube.

Repairs will start in October to restore the South Perkasie Covered Bridge.

Repairs are starting on one of Bucks County’s most iconic covered bridges after Hurricane Ida ripped it from its concrete supports three years ago, writes JD Mullane for Bucks County Courier Times.

The Perkasie Borough Council voted Sept. 3 to award a $195,030 engineering and rehab contract to Wood Research and Development for the 200-year-old South Perkasie Covered Bridge.

The repairs begin in early October and are expected to cost about $1 million, covered largely through federal and state grant money.

The repairs will finish in January 2025 and the bridge will reopen to the public in August 2025.

The South Perkasie span is unique because it sits in Lenape Park, on land.

The bridge was built in 1832 to span Pleasant Spring Creek but it was condemned in the late 1950s when it couldn’t handle increased traffic volume.

Locals rallied and saved it, and it was relocated a mile to Lenape Park.

“It is the third-oldest Town Lattice style covered bridge in the United States and a special example of an original covered bridge,” said Scott Bomboy, chair of the council’s historical committee and the Bucks County Covered Bridge Society.

Read more about this unique covered bridge in the Bucks County Courier Times.
