Indigenous People’s Day Celebrations

This Sunday marked Indigenous Peoples Day, Temple Update spoke with tribal members and has more on celebrations in the city of Philadelphia highlighting native culture.

The beating of drums and the singing of rain bringers sounds off the Indigenous People’s Day festivities each year at bartram’s garden.

The festivities have taken place at Bartrams Garden for fourteen years, the last seven of them have been co-sponsored by Ollin Yoliztil Calmecac, a non-profit ran by Brujo De La Manche, it’s purpose is promote Indigenous Culture throughout the Americas.

Working together with the park, Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac wants to bring authentic indigenous cultural practices into the spotlight from dancing to food.

Maria Jose Morales Garcia, a volunteer at the festival says that “Corn is very essential in a creation story for a lot of cultural folks in the Americas. So it’s essential that we don’t forget how to make those foods.”

Celebrations on Sunday included various activities from guest speakers, arts & crafts, cultural dances and food as well.

While the festival is loved by many, members of the Lenni Lenape tribe are left wanting more from city leaders.

Meredith Sanders, a member of the New Jersey Lenni Lenape tribe says”I would love to see the city have more involvement with our tribe. You know, I’m sick of going to Lenape events and being honored and not seeing any Lenape people actually there.”

De La Manche says the festival’s goal is to encourage indigenous involvement he hopes the festival will increase awareness of indigenous history in the city.

“Our people have been here for centuries, you know thats the reason of the celebration to remind them and however ways somehow, we will keep going.”

Even as the festival winds down celebrations of…

Key Takeaways:

  • POLITICS: New Head Of UNAMI Arrives In Iraq; Iran’s Foreign Minister Visits Baghdad, Signals Interest In De-Escalation – On October 13, the new head of the UN Assistance Mission to Iraq (UNAMI), Mohammed al-Hassan arrived in Baghdad to assume his position following the departure of Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert. On the same day Hassan met with PM Mohammed al-Sudani for talks that focused on the relationship between Iraq and the UN during the remainder of UNAMI’s time in Iraq, which expires on December 31, 2025. The new UNAMI chief then traveled to the Kurdistan region where he had several meetings with political leaders to discuss preparations for the region’s parliamentary elections, which are scheduled to take place on October 20. On October 13, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi visited Baghdad for talks with Iraqi PM Sudani that focused on efforts to end Israeli attacks on Gaza and Lebanon and prevent the conflict from spreading. Araqchi said the objective of his visit was to carry out consultations about the trajectory of events and enhance coordination between Iraq and Iran. At a joint press conference with Araqchi, Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein emphasized that Baghdad seeks to keep Iraq away from war, adding that war and peace decisions belong to the Iraqi state and the formal branches of government – a reference to the role of Iran-backed militias in attacks on Israel. Hussein also reiterated Baghdad’s objection to the use of its territory for attacks on neighboring countries, noting that Israel’s use of Iraqi airspace to attack Iraq was unacceptable. Meanwhile, the Iranian minister told reporters that his country was ready for war, but at the same time wanted peace and was not in favor of further escalation with Israel. In other developments, on October 12, PM Sudani received a…

Annual rockfish survey shows more discouraging results in Maryland

Results of annual striped bass survey shows little change for sixth straight year.

MARYLAND, USA — Maryland’s rockfish are struggling to reproduce, putting the species at risk. That’s according to the results of the 2024 juvenile striped bass survey, which tracks the reproductive activity of Maryland’s state fish in the Chesapeake Bay.

According to a report from the Department of Natural Resources, the number of young rockfish born in 2024 is much lower than normal—just 2.0 compared to the usual average of 11.0. This marks the sixth year in a row that rockfish have had poor reproduction rates.

“These results underscore the complexity of managing a coastal migratory species whose life-cycle is influenced by environmental conditions during a brief spawning period,” said Maryland DNR Fishing and Boating Services Director Lynn Fegley. “We will continue to explore ways to conserve and enhance the spawning population during this time when we are adding fewer young fish to the population.”

During this annual survey, fishery managers examine 22 sites located in four major striped bass spawning areas: the Choptank, Nanticoke, and Potomac rivers, and the upper Chesapeake Bay. Biologists visit each site three times per summer, collecting fish with two sweeps of a 100-foot beach seine net. The index represents the average number of young-of-year striped bass found in each sample. The juvenile striped bass average less than 3 inches long and are not usually encountered by anglers. Similar fish surveys conducted this summer in the Patapsco, Magothy, Rhode, West, Miles, and Tred Avon rivers found fewer striped bass, also known as rockfish.

In recent years, Maryland has implemented management actions aimed at rebuilding the spawning stock, including reductions to catch limits, increased protections for spawning fish, tighter slot limits, and season closures. However, warm conditions in winter continue…

'When we get together, it’s family from all the tribes' — Penn Treaty Park a place of peace for Indigenous Peoples Day

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Hundreds of people from across the United States and abroad are in the city to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day at a very significant location.

Penn Treaty Park, on the banks of the Delaware River in Fishtown, is where founder of the commonwealth William Penn signed a treaty of peace with the local Lenape tribe in 1683, according to legend. Now, it is known as a place of peace and plays host to an annual celebration of North and South American native cultures.

“The festival consists of shows and stories and teachings of native life and native history,” says Janis Stacy who is with IPD Philly and is one of the event’s organizers.

They welcome natives from Canada to Chile on this day, for the purpose of “countering the idea of Columbus — which came in and started a massive genocide against our people,” Stacy said.

“When we get together, it’s family from all the tribes, from all the nations. All the council fires come together, and we start sharing stories and such.”

Indigenous Peoples Day has been celebrated in this way in Philadelphia since 2017. Philadelphia replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day as an official city holiday in 2021.

Eugene Black Crow, a Lakota raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, was one of the many people who came to celebrate.

“They come and perform, they dance, they sell their wares. I, myself, do bead work and medicine pouches,” said Black Crow.

Black Crow, who is dedicated to preserving the Lakota language and culture, has attended the celebration since 2018.

“I just like sitting here enjoying the people you know. We have people from South America, Central America and North America. We’re all native Americans.”

Stacy, who is of Dakota and Cherokee…

Prosecutors seek 8 years for Dutch woman accused of keeping Yazidi slaves in Syria

Prosecutors in the Netherlands on Wednesday asked judges to convict a Dutch woman for joining Islamic State in Syria and keeping two Yazidi women as slaves and sentence her to eight years in prison.

Hasna Aarab, 33, faces charges of taking part in slavery as a crime against humanity for enslaving two Yazidi, between 2015 and 2016, while she lived in Raqqa with her small son and her Islamic State fighter husband.

She had told judges earlier in the trial that she moved from the Netherlands to Islamic State-held territory in Syria in 2015 with her young son to try to change her life for the better.

One of her alleged victims, identified only as Z., told the district court in the Hague she viewed Aarab as partly responsible for Islamic State crimes against Yazidis and the enslavement of not only herself but also her two daughters who were kept as domestic slaves in other households.

“I burned inside when I saw her with her son while I did not have my own children around me,” Z. said as a tearful Aarab listened. Mohican Flowers Joins Nationwide Effort to ‘Petal It Forward’

Mohican Flowers Joins Nationwide Effort to ‘Petal It Forward’

COOPERSTOWN—Today, Mohican Flowers is joining dozens of floral industry businesses nationwide to surprise unsuspecting passersby in Cooperstown with two free flower bouquets each—one to keep and one to give to a friend, family member, colleague, or even a stranger.

The random-acts-of-kindness effort, called “Petal It Forward” and organized by the Society of American Florists, is designed to help people start their day with more smiles and less stress. The effort illustrates research from the University of North Florida that shows living with flowers reduces stress. The effort was purposefully planned for a Wednesday to help the mid-week slump.

The original idea behind Petal It Forward’s “keep one, share one” concept came after looking at statistics that showed while 80 percent of people reported receiving flowers makes them happy, even more, 88 percent, said that giving flowers makes them happy.

Hanna Bergene-Bauer of Mohican Flowers wanted to be a part of the mood-boosting effort, and make a difference in the community.

“We are lucky enough to experience the joy of flowers on a daily basis and any chance we get to share that joy, we gladly accept the opportunity,” said Bauer. “Through the positive effects of flowers, we hope to make someone’s day brighter, and provide a much-needed moment of calm amidst the hectic pace of life,” she added.

In addition to the Petal It Forward event this week, Mohican Flowers is also working with Bassett Healthcare Network to donate 200 pink carnations to support “GO PINK” for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“It feels good to have the opportunity to give back…

Former teen singing icons and funny men take the stage this week in CT arts

This week in Connecticut arts features a very high percentage of performers who kicked off their careers in their teens and are still going strong.

There’s child actor-turned-pop star Jesse McCartney, style-shifting country/rap phenom Kidd G, Ricky Montgomery, (who has moved from social media to other media), LeAnn Rimes (who had her first country hit at 13), and Indian tabla player Zakir Hussain, who released his first album at 19 and was playing on a George Harrison record at 22.

Stephen Sanchez, who’s headlining at Mohegan Sun Arena, is just 21 and released his first EP three years ago. Billy Bragg, performing at District Music Hall in Norwalk, was around 20 when he formed his first band but has stuck around a long time as a solo artist. His “Roaring Forties” mimics an anthology album that collects his work from 1983 to 2023.

Finally, there are some animated characters coming to Connecticut this week, from Bluey to Pinkalicious, who remain children but have been entertaining other children for decades.
