Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark’s sensational first season in professional basketball came to an end on Wednesday, as the Fever were eliminated from the WNBA playoffs by the Connecticut Sun.

Per usual, Clark was fantastic on offense. She rebounded from a lackluster scoring effort during Game 1 on Sunday to score 25 points on 10-23 shooting from the field while adding 9 assists and 6 rebounds on Wednesday.

Clark re-finding her form on offense isn’t a surprise, given how elite of a playmaker and shooter she is. Yet, one play during Wednesday’s game has many fans believing that offense should not be Clark’s biggest concern.

Connecticut’s “dagger” on Wednesday came when guard Marina Mabrey hit a clutch three-pointer with 45 seconds left in the game to put Indiana up four points. Clark was supposed to be guarding her but appeared to fall victim to “ball watching”, which freed Mabrey up to hit the shot.

Clark caught a lot of criticism on social media for what appeared to be a defensive lapse in pivotal possession.

X user @CallingsonMaka added, “The fact that their season ended on her typical bad defen[s]e is so poetic. Like you literally can’t make this s*** up”.

Football roundup: High Point defeats Vernon

High Point boosted its record to 5-1 with a win over Vernon, 35-14, at home Friday, Oct. 4.

Jerron Martress made two touchdowns for the Wildcats and Slade Muller, Dylan Masters and John Elko each made one. Mark Leach made two extra points on a pass from Martress. Jacob Woods kicked three extra points.

Jake DelRosario and Gavin Bruno each made a touchdown for the Vikings (3-3).

Martress rushed for 232 yards during the game.

Vernon quarterback Aden Karwoski completed 16 of 25 pass attempts for a total of 130 yards.

Elko completed six of eight pass attempts for a total of 79 yards for High Point.

Sparta wins

Sparta (5-1) shut out Dover, 40-0, there Oct. 4.

No statistics were available for the game.

Dover has won only one game this season.

Newton wins

The Braves (3-2) shut out Jefferson, 41-0, there Oct. 4.

Nick Kurilko made three touchdowns, Evan Cotter made two and Reid Corino added another. Corino also scored a safety.

Braxton Guerra kicked two extra points and Kurilko kicked one.

No other statistics were available.

The Falcons have won only one game this season.

Wallkill Valley wins

Wallkill Valley defeated Hopatcong, 41-6, at home Saturday, Oct. 5.

The Rangers’ record is 4-2 this season, while Hopatcong has yet to win a game.

Lenape Valley defeated Sussex Tech, 28-16, there Oct. 5.

The Museum of the American Revolution will honor Native American history and culture with a series of events next weekend.

Indigenous Peoples Weekend will run Saturday, Oct. 12, through Monday, Oct. 14. Each day, the museum will host traditional Native American dance performances, living history interpreters, crafts and films.

Each day during the weekend, a group of dancers from the Delaware Tribe of Indians will perform traditional Lenape social dances. The dances, which are free and open to the public, will take place on the museum’s outdoor plaza at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the performances will move inside to the museum’s lobby.

Also during the weekend, living history interpreters Kehala Smith (Tuscarora Nation, Turtle Clan) and Jordan Smith (Mohawk, Bear Clan) will be in the museum’s Oneida Nation Atrium sharing stories with visitors about their culture, costuming and traditions. Visitors can check out a discovery cart, which features replica artifacts and documents linked to Tyonajanegen (Two Kettles Together), an Oneida woman who participated in the Battle of Oriskany during the Revolutionary War’s Saratoga Campaign.

In the Oneida Nation Gallery, visitors can also explore a multimedia gallery detailing the Oneida Indian Nation’s debate over whether to break away from the Six Nations Confederacy and support the Revolutionary cause.

Atlantic City, N.J. — A new exhibit at the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University will celebrate two southern New Jersey tribal communities through the display of historical documents, traditional artifacts and contemporary art.

“Still Here: The Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape and Powhatan-Renape Nations of Southern New Jersey” opens Oct. 9 and runs until Jan. 5, 2025. An opening reception will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.

Some of the traditional artifacts that will be on display as part of the exhibit.

The exhibit hopes to bring attention to two area Indigenous communities that share a common culture, languages, historical roots and a united commitment to preserving their past, present and future, said the exhibit’s curator Phoebe Farris.

“The first two words in the title of this exhibition are used in many Native-themed exhibitions. I am not the first or last curator to include this popular phrase,” said Farris, a professor emerita at Purdue University in Indiana. She identifies as Powhatan-Pamunkey descent and her research expertise centers on contemporary Indigenous art and culture.

“The phrase is used frequently because too many people in the United States and around the world think Indigenous peoples are extinct or just ‘remnants’ of past ethnic, racial and cultural populations that have become so mixed and ‘unpure’ that terms like Indigenous, Native American, American Indian and First Nations do not really apply to them. This current exhibition highlights that we are still here in New Jersey.”

Among the items in the exhibit are painted drums, baskets, beaded moccasins, jewelry, clothing, contemporary paintings, photographs, and feather headdresses. The exhibit will also feature books, newspapers and other…

Harrington, DE — Legacy Racing of Delaware and Nanticoke Racing’s Melvin G ($2.10, Jim Morand) was the fastest winner of Wednesday’s (Oct. 2) four $20,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders’ Fund (DSBF) 2-year-old trotting splits at Harrington Raceway, and he broke the track record for his division with a 1:58.1 score.

The E L Platinum gelding notched his second straight score for trainer Les Givens as he trotted away from the field comfortably on the front. Wolfpack Cheddar was second with Royalty Star third. The prior track record was set in 2022 by Perfect Twenty (1:58.2).

Virginia Louthan’s Saints Design ($8.00, Corey Callahan) won the first filly division in 2:02.3 over Marino Bluestone and Royal Toni. The St Patricks Day filly was making her first career start for her owner and trainer. Marino Bluestone was second with Royal Toni third. Callahan had four driving wins on the card.

Don and Dave Wiest’s Perfect Suprise ($15.00, Art Stafford Jr.) was a 2:01.1 winner in the first colt and gelding division. The Dave Wiest trainee reeled in pacesetter I’m Not George late for his first career win. Burly finished third. Perfect Suprise, an E L Platinum gelding, was making his sixth career start. Stafford had three wins on the program.

In the second filly division, the biggest upset to date this season in DSBF action occurred as Linda MacDonald’s Buttoncandy ($146.60, Stafford Jr.) was a 2:05.2 winner over Holly Lou and Take It Easy. Buttoncandy, trained by Joseph MacDonald, is sired by E L Platinum.

In overnight action, Dylan Davis and Howard Taylor’s Naked Cowboy ($2.40, Corey Callahan) broke the track record for 3-year-old trotters…

WEST CHESTER, PA — West Chester University has once again been honored with the prestigious Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award by Insight Into Diversity magazine, marking the fifth consecutive year the institution has received this national recognition. This award acknowledges the university’s steadfast dedication to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across its campus.

Tracey Robinson, Vice President of the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at West Chester University, emphasized the significance of this accolade. “The HEED Award demonstrates engagement in a wide array of best practices, in addition to innovation and a collective commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This award is all about what we do, not just what we say,” Robinson stated. The university’s efforts to serve a diverse student body have been pivotal to this recognition.

Among the initiatives that contributed to the award are the COMPASS Program, which boasts an impressive 87% student retention rate, and the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Gordon Natural Area. The latter included new signage in both the Lenape and English languages, reflecting a collaboration with the Delaware Tribe of Indians. Additionally, the university has expanded its support services for pregnant and parenting students and launched the Moon Shot for Equity Initiative, aimed at closing equity gaps through strategic interventions.

The HEED Award process is rigorous, involving a comprehensive application that evaluates recruitment and retention strategies, leadership support for diversity, and campus culture, among other criteria. Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of Insight Into Diversity, highlighted the thoroughness required to select the award recipients, emphasizing the high standards set for institutions to achieve this honor.

The “Piano Man” will perform a round of one-night-only shows at stadiums across the U.S. in 2025 with support from the iconic Sting and Stevie Nicks on select dates.

Billy Joel is slated to play five shows, kicking things off at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on February 8 with Sting. From there, he’ll appear at Uncasville’s Mohegan Sun Arena for a solo show and Detroit’s Ford Field with Nicks. Sting will help him round-out the run with gigs at Syracuse’s JMA Wireless Dome, the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, and Salt Lake City’s Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Joel is also on tour this year; fans can find him performing on September 27 at St. Louis’ Busch Stadium, followed by gigs in Inglewood, San Antonio, Las Vegas, and Hollywood, Florida throughout the year. He’s set to celebrate New Year’s Eve with a show on December 31 at Belmont Park’s UBS Arena in New York; the concert will mark the second consecutive year the singer will headline the venue to ring in the new year.

Earlier this year, Joel concluded his remarkable and record-breaking residency at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, taking the stage for the 150th and final time.
