PBS Wisconsin wins 2024 Midwest Emmy, National Edward. R Murrow awards

PBS Wisconsin is honored to have received two Midwest Emmy Awards and two national Edward R. Murrow Awards this fall. The awards both recognize the public media organization’s commitment to creating and sharing outstanding journalism and quality programming for the state of Wisconsin.

The Midwest Emmy Awards, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, celebrate excellence in regional television, while the Edward R. Murrow Awards, given by the Radio Television Digital News Association, recognize excellence in broadcast and digital journalism across the country.

During the 66th annual Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards ceremony Nov. 2, 2024, PBS Wisconsin Education’s Electa Quinney: Mohican Teacher and Mentor, part of the Wisconsin Biographies collection, won the Emmy for Outstanding Achievement for Children/Youth/Teen – Short and Long Form Content. The animated short-form episode tells the story of Electa Quinney, a Mohican educator and mentor who is known to many as Wisconsin’s first public school teacher. She taught both Native and non-Native students together, and led her community with generosity and a commitment to education for all.

For the production of Electa Quinney: Mohican Teacher and Mentor, PBS Wisconsin Education worked to gain approval on various aspects of the project from the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians Tribal Council.

“By implementing the four values of responsibility, respect, relationality and reciprocity, PBS Wisconsin Education’s partnership with the Stockbridge-Munsee community produced a model rooted in tribal input and co-development,” said Monique Tyndall, cultural affairs director for the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans. “Our tribe has a wealth of creative talent. The Electa Quinney: Mohican Teacher and Mentor project gave us the agency to share such talent with the public.”

Couple linked to US$130,000 UK, Canada, Ireland job scam

Police in Bulawayo are urging the public to come forward with any information regarding the whereabouts of Gwendolyn and Melusi Ndlovu, a couple wanted in connection with a series of fraud cases that took place throughout 2023.

The Ndlovus are accused of committing 18 fraud offenses between January and July 2023, defrauding victims of a total of US$134,552. According to police reports, the couple posed as agents working for a company that purportedly facilitated job placements in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Victims, under the impression that they were securing legitimate overseas employment, made substantial payments to the couple, only to later discover they had been scammed.

The fraudulent activities were exposed when one of the victims, Alison Unami, reported the matter to the police on May 3, 2023. Gwendolyn Ndlovu was arrested shortly thereafter, and the following day, her husband, Melusi Ndlovu, was apprehended at the Bulawayo police station while visiting his wife.

In the initial media coverage of the case, an error was made in the report, mistakenly identifying Alison Unami as one of the accused. Bulawayo Police Spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube, clarified the mistake, stating, “We want to correct the error in the media statement. Alison Unami is a victim in this case, not a perpetrator.”

Following their arrests, the Ndlovus were granted bail with conditions that included reporting to the police three times a week. However, the couple allegedly provided a false address to the court, claiming they resided at 568 Ntepe, Gwanda, when in fact they had previously lived at 300 Ntshonalanga Road, Sunninghill, Bulawayo.

Inspector Ncube explained, “After failing to comply with their bail conditions, the Ndlovus absconded, and a warrant for their arrest has been issued.” He further appealed to the public for assistance, saying, “We are urging anyone with information about their…

‘Vets Rock’: Mohegan Sun celebrates decade of support for veterans

Uncasville — The 10th annual Vets Rock event, featuring programs aimed at improving the lives and opportunities for veterans and active-duty military personnel, took place Saturday afternoon at Mohegan Sun.

With 1,000 guests in attendance throughout the day, the event sought to connect veterans with fellow service members, service organizations, job opportunities and support resources.

The day began with an opening ceremony hosted by WTNH Channel 8 chief meteorologist Gil Simmons. The Tribal Color Guard participated in the ceremony, various speakers from Mohegan Sun’s executive team addressed the audience, and the Griswold High School choir performed a rendition of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.”

“We’re really excited that we’ve been able to do so much over the course of the last 10 years, and (we’re) looking forward to 10 more years,” said Jeff Hamilton, Mohegan Sun’s president and general manager.

All Paws on Deck, a non-profit dedicated to finding sheltered dogs homes, hosted an adoption event at the exposition. Todd Stiles, 39, a retired Army veteran from Oakdale, adopted Ascher, an energetic five-month-old Great Dane.

Stiles, who is attending Vets Rock for the second year in a row, says what drew him back was the sense of community and camaraderie he experiences with other veterans.

“It’s a different type of community that most aren’t used to. It’s a bunch of crazy guys and girls that love each other unconditionally. It’s great,” Stiles said. “It’s nice to know you have a network around here.”

In the main event room, Clinton-based band Bluewater Boys played upbeat, buoyant sounds as veterans communed and met with exhibitors and fellow attendees. Various organizations, including the Office of Senator Richard Blumenthal, Everlasting Veteran, LLC and the American Legion Department of Connecticut ensured veterans knew support resources were available.

Bay Connection Helps Small Delaware Town Afford Big Redevelopment Plans

This is the fourth blog in a series about the great clean water work that is happening upriver in West Virginia, Delaware, and other states that don’t directly border the Bay. Much of the funding and resources for this critical work are only made possible through the landmark 40-year Bay partnership, a collaborative effort between states, the federal government, and local partners to reduce pollution and restore habitats across our remarkable watershed.

Growing up near Laurel, Delaware, Jamie Smith rarely thought about the Chesapeake Bay. In fact, she had no idea that Broad Creek, the waterway that runs through the small town, was a Bay tributary.

“I thought ok, it’s the Broad Creek. It goes into the Nanticoke River and beyond that I didn’t know. I didn’t think about ‘where’s the Nanticoke River going?’” she said.

Nor do most Laurel residents, she figures. But as town manager, Smith knows that Laurel’s connection to the Bay is more than geographic. It’s the foundation—and a key funding source—for the town’s ambitious waterfront redevelopment plan called The Ramble.

The sweeping initiative aims to revitalize Laurel by attracting residents, visitors, and local businesses to Broad Creek’s banks. But that wasn’t the original goal. It started as, and remains, a plan that uses green infrastructure to reduce polluted runoff into Broad Creek, the Nanticoke River, and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay.

UN Iraq SRSG calls for solutions to Yazidi IDP’s difficult conditions and commends their resilience [EN/AR]

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Dr. Mohamed Al Hassan, visited the Khanky Camp for Internally Displaced Persons from the Yazidi community in Duhok Governorate, Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

He toured the facility, met with residents and with camp management to hear their concerns and needs, and to view the IDPs’ living conditions. Yazidis have endured difficult living conditions in Khanky, a sea of white plastic canvas tents and makeshift structures, since they were forced to flee their homes in Sinjar, Ninewa Governorate, during the onslaught of Da’esh/ISIL on the area in 2014. He also met with a number of Yazidi children who were born in these temporary camps, knowing no other place.

Dr. Al Hassan called for urgent and swift action on this important humanitarian file. “These conditions should not continue. What is at stake is human lives. Such a situation should not continue.” The SRSG stressed the international community’s confidence in Iraq’s ability to provide better care for all its people, especially those who have suffered from Da’esh’s crimes.

Sinjar, among other places, was a scene of some of the worst atrocities committed by Da’esh in 2014-2017 conflict. Ten years since the crimes against Yazidis and seven years since the territorial defeat of Da’esh, more than 200,000 Yazidis remain displaced in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, many in IDP camps like Khanky, their return home held up by a number of factors, including the destruction wrought on their homes in Sinjar, unstable security conditions as well as lack of adequate services. Some have returned, but without sufficient support and services they need to lead dignified normal lives, let alone the over 2,600 Yazidis who, according to international statistics, are still missing.

‘Sad to see’: Fire rips through ‘historic’ Highland Golf Club in Shelton

The golf club had been gearing up to celebrate 125 years.

SHELTON, Conn. — The Highland Golf Club in Shelton was destroyed in a fire late Friday night, leaving nothing but the stone fireplace, charred propane tanks and the plot of land where the 125-year-old building once stood.

Firefighters were called to the golf course on Wooster Street just before 11:30 p.m. Friday for a report of a “well-involved” structure fire.

No one was at the golf club when firefighters responded, officials said. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.

Fire crews had to move propane tanks that were exposed to the fire, and some of the embers from the fire caused some small brush fires in the area, according to Shelton Fire Chief Francis Jones.

“The greatest challenge was a wind-driven fire, well-advanced fire and the propane tanks exposed to the fire,” Jones said.

Crews will remain at the scene Saturday to monitor hotspots, as dry conditions and high winds continue into the weekend.

Jones added that it was “sad to see that such a nice, historic structure” was destroyed by fire, as the golf club was getting ready to celebrate 125 years.

The Fire Marshal’s Office and Shelton police and investigating the cause of the fire.

Students bring Christmas spirit to downtown Wilkes-Barre

We might still officially be in fall but the Diamond City’s downtown is beginning to look like a winter wonderland.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — It’s Frosty the Snowman’s time to shine in Wilkes-Barre.

“Nothing wrong with celebrating early at all, if anything, it brings more like a joy to this time of the year,” said Nebula Newhart, Nanticoke.

Students from Wilkes-Barre Career and Technical Center are behind the holiday decor seen in these planters around the downtown.

“It makes the community look nice. And around our square, around Wilkes Barre,” said Danny Ortiz, Wilkes-Barre.

“What I personally like about is how we used the greens to make it look more flush and more life-like, and using the birch twigs to like add it to the thing. I think it makes it look more natural in a way,” said Nebula.

“We do a lot of stuff like this at the school, like decorating the sign and just the center area of the school. We place trees around as well. So, it makes sense. We do a lot of crafts with the pine leaves as well,” said Lilliana Paglianite, Pittston.

While projects like this might seem like a small change, businesses in the area say it doesn’t go unnoticed.

“Absolutely, you know, it’s beautiful, just small, little things. Take pride in your city, makes it awesome. Our customers absolutely notice it. You know, we’ve talked about it before. It looks good. It’s cool. They have the kids doing it too,” said Anthony Ranella, Loyalty Barbershop Wilkes-Barre owner.

Students say they enjoy the opportunity to do something outside of the classroom and look forward to what comes next.

Patrol initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for a violation in the area of Almshouse Road and Winding Way. Through investigation, they driver was taken into custody for the suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Traffic Accident (Deer Involved)

Patrol responded to the area of Newtown-Richboro Road and Rock Way for a traffic accident. Unit # 1 was traveling westbound on Newtown-Richboro Road toward Rock Way when a deer ran into the passenger side area of the vehicle. Tow was not required.

Patrol responded to the area of Buck Road and Holland Road for the report of a traffic accident. Unit # 2 was stopped on Buck Road at Holland Road when unit # 1 struck them from behind. Unit # 1 was traveling the same direction as unit # 2. Tow was not required.

Patrol responded to the area of Lenape Road for a traffic accident. Unit # 1 was traveling on Lenape Road when it struck an unoccupied vehicle that was parked. Tow was required.
