The Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) program of Montclair State University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences has been awarded a three-year, $1 million grant from the Mellon Foundation to create a new center, the New Jersey Center for Indigenous Justice (NJCIJ), and to expand its programing.

With its commitment to Indigenous rights, racial justice, decolonization and eco-justice, the NAIS program emphasizes the priorities of New Jersey’s state-recognized Native American tribes – the Ramapough Lunaape, Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape and Powhatan Renape nations – which include environmental justice, political recognition, cultural heritage and language revitalization.

The NJCIJ will be a center for communication, fundraising, events and gatherings that highlight the unique questions facing Montclair’s Indigenous students and New Jersey’s tribal communities. It will coordinate the University’s work to change public narratives, increase Indigenous student enrollment and pursue justice-oriented action on issues affecting Native people in the state.

“The NJCIJ will give focus to the varied work Montclair faculty and students are doing in partnership with New Jersey’s tribal communities,” says Anthropology Department Chair Chris Matthews, a co-director of NAIS and co-Principal Investigator of the grant. “[It] will be the first and only university-based project in New Jersey that aims to transform public understanding of Native people and to do so in partnership with Indigenous communities across the…

Hidden Delaware Indian camps in Oklahoma: My journey through 3,000 years of history

In the rugged landscapes of northeastern Oklahoma, where rolling hills meet pristine lakes, lies a hidden treasure trove of ancient history. The Cherokee Hills, once home to the Delaware Indian camps, whisper tales of resilience, migration, and cultural richness that span centuries. As you stand atop these verdant mounds, you can almost hear the echoes of Delaware voices carried on the wind, telling stories of their epic journey from the eastern seaboard to this lush Oklahoma haven.

The Great Migration: From East Coast to Heartland

The Delaware Tribe’s odyssey began long before Oklahoma was even a whisper on the lips of settlers. Originating from the Unami- and Munsee-speaking peoples of the Delaware and Hudson River valleys, these resilient Native Americans embarked on a series of migrations that would ultimately lead them to the Cherokee Hills.

By 1831, the Delaware had made a significant move from the White River area to the junction of the Kansas and Missouri rivers. However, their journey was far from over. As one tribal elder recounts:

“Our ancestors carried the spirit of our people across rivers and mountains, always moving, always adapting, but never forgetting who we were.”

The Treaty of 1866: A New Chapter in Delaware History

The year 1866 marked a pivotal moment for the Delaware Tribe. Signing the Treaty with the Delaware, they agreed to relocate from their Kansas reservation to Indian Territory, now known as northeastern Oklahoma. This wasn’t just a simple move; it was a calculated decision that would shape their future for generations to come.

The Delaware chose a 10-by-30-mile tract of land along the upper Caney River valley, purchasing it from the Cherokee Nation for a staggering $438,000. This investment in their future speaks volumes about the tribe’s foresight and determination to secure a place they could truly call…

“Energy demands are soaring and Ontario will need new energy generation,” Bentley said. “As Mayor, I’m excited to be able to bridge that gap.

“OPG (Ontario Power Generation) has the old coal generating site sitting there with the infrastructure waiting to be developed.”

Bentley said the creation of a new fund with up to $50 million for municipal host communities for infrastructure investments and attraction of co-located industry will be a positive impact for Haldimand County.

“The addition to our municipal tax base, the associated jobs and economic development for our municipalities, I believe is a win for our county,” Bentley said. “I look forward to working with all parties in the upcoming months to start planning for our future and the future of our residents.”

Bentley commented following an announcement by Stephen Lecce, Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Electrification, last week.

Lecce said Nanticoke is one of three Ontario Power Generation (OPG) sites that are being examined as potential sites for future electricity developments. The other two sites are Lambton in St. Clair, previously home to coal-fired generating stations, and Wesleyville in Port Hope.

Bentley attended Lecce’s announcement.

“Our economy is undergoing a profound transformation — we are attracting historic investments in electric vehicle and battery production, the life sciences and manufacturing, and we’re electrifying whole industries like steel production,” Lecce said. “But with…

Bemström hits for double, Blomqvist gets shutout for Pens

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins avenged last weekend’s loss by blanking the Bridgeport Islanders, 5-0, at Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza on Friday night.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (9-4-1-0) put forth a clinic on both the offensive and defensive side of the puck to pick up the team’s third shutout of the season. Emil Bemström led the offense with three points (2G-1A), while Joel Blomqvist backstopped the Penguins with a 23-save clean sheet.

Avery Hayes jumpstarted the Penguins and secured the night’s first goal nearly seven minutes into the game. Hayes sparked a breakaway after a great defensive play and deked Bridgeport’s Jakub Škarek into a split, sliding the puck through his five hole.

Later in the first, Bemström buried another breakaway off a set-up from Ville Koivunen and Boris Katchouk, going bar-down over Škarek’s left shoulder.

Bemström’s second tally arrived at 3:50 of the third period, extended the Penguins’ lead to three. Katchouk found the back of the net shortly thereafter, giving Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 4-0 advantage.

Bridgeport was afforded a full, two-minute five-on-three power play late in regulation. Even though the Penguins already had a four-goal lead with under four minutes to play, the team up forth a sterling effort to stave off the full two-man advantage. As soon as Jonathan Gruden and Hayes escaped the penalty box, the two raced ahead for an odd man rush that culminated in Gruden scoring to make it 5-0.

Joel Blomqvist was perfect in his second game back in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, making a series of brilliant saves when the game was still close. The finest of his 23 stops came when he sprawled to his left for an acrobatic denial of Islanders super veteran Chris Terry.

Škarek stopped 28 of 33 shots faced in defeat.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s next game is on Black Friday,…

‘Community-minded’ Haldimand councillor Stewart Patterson dies midway through second term

A second chair around Haldimand County’s council table is now empty after the death of Coun. Stewart Patterson on Tuesday.

Patterson, the Ward 1 representative, died early on Nov. 26 at age 65, less than a month after Coun. Marie Trainer died on Oct. 31 following a car crash.

Patterson — who spent the final 12 days of his political life as Haldimand’s deputy mayor — contended with an undisclosed illness in recent months and missed Monday’s council meeting.

He was in the midst of his second term as the representative for Jarvis, Townsend, Nanticoke and the surrounding area, after first being elected in 2018 and then acclaimed in 2022.

In a message of condolence, Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley called Patterson “a mentor to many,” noting his contributions to the municipality, which included roles with the police services board, Haldimand Norfolk Housing Corporation and Haldimand’s accessibility advisory committee.

“He was a staunch proponent of transparent and accountable government, earning the respect of colleagues and residents for his integrity and commitment to good governance,” read a statement issued by Haldimand County.

Chief administrative officer Cathy Case remembered Patterson as “a kind, thoughtful, diligent individual who worked hard to make a difference.”

Patterson immigrated from Northern Ireland as a teenager in 1974 and landed in Jarvis, later getting a job as a millwright at Stelco’s Lake Erie steelworks in Nanticoke, where he was active in the steelworkers union over his 30 years with the company.

He joined the Jarvis Lions Club in 1987 and went on to serve as local governor and district chair.

“He was, and wanted to be, involved in the community and give back to the community,” said Bill Kelly, president of the Jarvis Board of Trade and a fellow Lion who knew Patterson for almost 40 years through both organizations.

“I know him as a very community-minded…
