BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Warriors rally from 10 down in fourth quarter

Luke Kopetchny scored 21 points and joined Lukas Burakiewicz and Mitchell Rusinchak in leading a late-game comeback that allowed Wyoming Area to rally past host Nanticoke 62-59 Tuesday night in a non-league boys basketball game.

The Warriors trailed by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter and were still down seven in the last four minutes. Their last seven points in a game-ending, 9-2 run came at the foul line where they hit their last five attempts.

Kopetchny’s second three-point play in less than two minutes started that run.

Burakiewicz ended a second-half Wyoming Area drought and scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Rusinchak was a big part of the late-game defense that allowed Wyoming Area to limit Nanticoke to four points over the final 3:25 and force five fourth-quarter turnovers while not committing any.

Anthony DeLucca’s 3-pointer gave the Warriors a 36-32 lead with 6:04 left in the third quarter, but then they went cold and the Trojans used their control of the boards to move in front.

Nanticoke scored the next 13 points and grabbed the first six rebounds of the fourth quarter.

The lead grew to 46-38 after three quarters and the Trojans added the first basket of the fourth as the Warriors went 4:27 without scoring and 7:36 without a field before Burakiewicz hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Kopetchny not only gave Wyoming Area its first rebound of the fourth quarter, but he took it the length of the floor, weaving between players in the lane for the three-point play with 3:40 left to cut the deficit to 53-49.

The remaining three Warriors field goals all came from within the paint, including Kopetchny’s next three-point play on a floater down the left side of the lane.

Last Mohican in world of classical music: Musicians condole death of Zakir Hussain

Kolkata: Leading musicians of West Bengal on Monday mourned the death of Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, describing him as a humble artist despite being the last of the Mohicans in the world of classical music. The 73-year-old US-based musician, who has taken the tabla to the global stage, died in a hospital in San Francisco, US, his family said on Monday.

Hussain died from complications arising out of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, the family said in a statement.

Santoor artist Pt Tarun Bhattacharya said, “There will not be another Zakir Hussain. He was the last Mohican in the world of classical music or one of the last Mohicans.”

Hussain experimented with Tabla bol (rhythm) in different classical ragas and style, Bhattacharya said, adding that Tablas used to speak under his hand.

Bhattacharya recalled that he would touch the feet of elders on stage before any performance.

He was the one who had brought Indian tabla before the world and made Indian classical instrumental music on par with the Beatles, the Santoor player said. Gima award winner and jury member for Grammy, Tabla artist Pradyut Mukherjee, described Hussain as a versatile player who was a great performer on stage. “I consider him as a mentor though he was not officially my guru. I had learnt rhythms and beats from him and he was always very humble and polite never showing any high highhandedness to newcomers,” he said.

Mukherjee said Hussain was always eager to help a budding talent if he could spot any spark in his repertoire.

“Zakir ji used to visit the shop of a Tabla maker in South Kolkata and would use their instrument for his performance here and abroad,” Mukherjee said.

Sarod player Pt Tejendra Narayan Majumdar…

Iraqi President discusses regional issues with UN, reaffirms commitment to Al-Sistani’s guidance

2024-12-15T13:34:54+00:00

Shafaq News/ On Sunday, Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid discussed local, Syrian, and regional developments with the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), stressing the importance of adhering to the guidance of Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani, Iraq’s foremost Shia cleric.

According to a statement from the Presidential Media Office, “President Rashid met with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, Mohamed Al-Hassan, to discuss the overall situation in Iraq and the latest regional developments, particularly in Syria, as well as efforts to find solutions that ensure Syria’s unity and stability.”

The president highlighted “the crucial role of UNAMI in supporting Iraq’s stability and development, and addressing current challenges.”

He also emphasized the importance of Al-Sistani’s vision, discussed with Al-Hassan, and his commitment to Iraq’s stability and keeping it away from regional conflicts.

In turn, the UN Special Envoy reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to “preserving Iraq’s security and developmental achievements and working to enhance them.”

Amid rising security concerns, especially from Syria’s unrest, Iraq’s high-level shuttle diplomacy has intensified, positioning the country as a pivotal player in the region’s shifting dynamics. As part of intense diplomatic visits, UN envoy Al-Hassan met with Ayatollah Al-Sistani, where they addressed the aftermath of recent events in Syria, particularly the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime to armed opposition groups, and the regional developments.

Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, Al-Hassan said that Iraq’s top Shiite cleric is committed to preserving the country’s unity and stability amid regional tensions. “Ayatollah Al-Sistani is keen to keep Iraq away from external conflicts that could destabilize the country.”

‘Last of Mohicans’: Chadians saddle up for bush horse racing

Biligoni, Chad: Through a cloud of dust in the late afternoon sunshine, Chadian jockeys, some riding bareback, raced their sleek, muscular steeds around the oval track marked out just a few days earlier to the cheers of a large crowd.

Horse racing in the central African country draws the wealthy and elite who venture far from the comforts of the big city to camp out in the bush to enjoy it.

From members of the president’s family to the stable owners, businessmen, diplomats and high-ranking officials, race season is a prestigious affair in one of the poorest countries in the world.

“Winning a race in Chad is like winning the Champion’s League,” said racehorse breeder and owner Amir Adoudou Artine, puffing on a small cigar, referring to the annual football competition of top-division European clubs.

Less well-heeled racegoers climbed trees or sat on the roofs of 4×4 pick-up trucks to get a good view of the Biligoni racecourse, in a town midway between the bush and the desert in the southwest of Barh el Gazel province.

Horse racing in Chad evolved decades ago from links with its former colonial ruler France, which has suffered a series of setbacks in the turbulent Sahel recently as Chad and others have ended military cooperation with Paris.

This year’s location was chosen as it is the home of Idriss Ahmed Idriss, a racehorse owner who is head of an association promoting improvements in horse breeding…

First Lady to visit Nanticoke Indian Museum

Tracy Quillen Carney reads at Selbyville library

Delaware First Lady Tracey Quillen Carney will read “Books for Blue” the children’s book she wrote about a little blue hen who discovers the joys of the printed word — at the Nanticoke Indian Museum near Millsboro at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21.

“I hope we’ve made the experience of reading together reflect some of the messages in ‘Books for Blue,’” Quillen Carney told the Coastal Point this week.

“The book is for kids of all ages, and we’ve read with all ages, knowing and enjoying how some will move around, ask questions and let their wiggles out. Others will stay cautiously on familiar laps, and some kids will jump right in my lap. We want to recognize and respect each child for who they are and really interact with them, to build trust and to nurture their curiosity.

“I hope that’s what we’ve practiced during the reading tour, and I hope it’s been as fun for others as it has been for me. There’s nothing better than earning a child’s smile,” the first lady said.

In August this year, Quillen Carney read the book to children at the Selbyville Public Library, then the life-sized Baby Blue arrived, making children run to her and smile at her black eyes, orange beak and feet, and bright red comb.

“Meet Baby Blue Hen — nickname, just ‘Blue’ — the youngest one here and the smallest one, too,” Carney read, holding the book up so children could see illustrations by Emily Hershman, who is also a member of Gov. John Carney’s staff.

“The family gives lots of help, no doubt, and a few suggestions…
